The serpent weaves; rain-slick, flint-quick fingers tangled up in a mess of dried grasses which smell of wet, black dirt and foul medicine. In the fragrant, mossy dark of slowly bruising evening, he is a lean, cruel shadow; dun coloured and clad in muslin, moist sand and dead weeds - dull, ochre eyes glitter beneath the gossamer hood he wears, conjuring images of river-silt. His face is set, sour, stoic and - there, at the corner of his snakeish lips - the pettish trembling of a fretting child. Mineral salts have crusted there; pale powders that glister like nacre when he pauses to lick them away. Their smell and taste are altogether a cuprous tang; a bright metallic twinge swirling in the steam that rises from the springs.
