I'm taking a class on Amazing Canadian Fiction and it's got a focus on Sci-fi. I'm not big into sci-fi on the whole, and I'm hoping that other people talking about it with other people might actually get my brain going on it.

I am working on reading Spin by Robert Charles Wilson and I just finished the short story "The Ray Gun: A Love Story." Has anyone else read these and if so, what did you think? I have to finish by Monday and I'm not that far in, but it's good so far.
I haven't read those, but I'm interested in this topic because I am taking a Sci-fi Genre Study class in a couple weeks! :) I am already reading the first book; 2001: A Space Odyssey. I haven't finished it, but so far it's really neat. We're reading a bunch of other sci-fi books. I've never really read many 'official' sci-fi books, so I'm excited for the class. :) Are you liking yours so far?

I've only had one class and the prof is insane. The class isn't formal at all and he's only recently gotten into sci-fi. He requires us to read it before class and kicks you out if you don't read it. I'm kinda scared because I have memory issues. I'm scared he's going to ask me a quiestion and I'm going to go "What?!" and there is also a participation mark. I suck at that!

On the plus side, there is at least one book I wanted to read: Wake by J Sawyer. All the novels follow the same basic theme, with people putting their minds into computers and some such. I don't really know yet.

What other classes are you taking, Celestina? You're going for an English degree, right?
Yikes! That is scary D:

I am really excited for my class because we're gonna read books like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Time Machine. We also are going to watch clips from Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and even The Walking Dead :)

I'm actually in Liberal Arts so I can choose my classes more specifically. I'm taking a Philosophy of C.S. Lewis class and a Hans Christian Andersen class, as well as my gen eds(Literature and science) and my Bible class, Wisdom Lit. :)

My prof is a zombie nerd too - he's teaching a Canadian lit class on zombies, but it's completely full and a third year class so I'm not going to even try for it. If he teaches something next year, I do see myself going to his class again.
Hahaha wow!
It's important to find profs that you like. :) Five of my six profs this semester are ones I like or know. One I haven't had before, but he's my adviser. And then there's one I haven't had at all, but I have heard great things about her. All my other profs I've had before and I've liked them a lot. :)
I didn't know that collages have sci-fi classes o.o That's really cool! I mean sci-fi novel's, games and movies have inspired a lot of the things we have today so it's very neat.

I agreed on finding the profs. that you like. it makes a world of difference. I have one I am good friend with (she's a family friend too!) and when I was having trouble with understanding some things in the class, the object of one assignment was to identify underlying themes of classical literature (she chose The Odyssey) she helped me learn to identify some of those, helping me several times after class was over. In the end I passed the class with flying colors through hard work thanks to her helping.

Prof's you like is important to me because of that!

Well, the nice thing is that there is a class for everything. There is a school in the US that does a course on the philosophy of Buffy and there is a school here in Canada that does a course on vampires. If it exists, someone teaches it.

My prof got me (someone with severe anxiety issues) to actually answer a question in class and put my hand up to make a point. This is especially amazing since I had said something incredibly dumb in a first year class less than four hours before. I almost didn't say anything, but I managed to make a really good point no one else thought of. It felt really good. I feel like I will get a good participation grade in this class.
