I am curious about what others think about this. I, myself, tend to make alot of alts. I do this when i get bored, my mind wanders, or when i get sudden inspiration and the idea strikes my fancy, some of them never get used but for the majority i rp them off and on. I have thought about maby i make to many, but what are your peoples opinions and thoughts on the matter?
I have 80 alts. Figure it out.
At my peak I was tallied by several IRL doing friends as have 132 different characters.
I used to have around 30 and still do, but some are retired/inactive so I only have 3 'active' ones at the moment.
Creating characters is a good way to keep exercising your creativity, why give yourself a limit?

Good point!
I don't think you should limit yourself honestly. Hell, I enjoy making new character designs and such. I just force myself to wait on commissioning some art to see if I was just creating to be creative.. or if I actually use the darn thing!
In all though, you can never have to many alts. I have a lot of alts, but I only use two of them.

I think it only becomes an issue when people start alt hopping like crazy.. it sucks when you end up getting a really great story-line or roleplay with someone, only to watch them ditch the alt and hop from one to the other.

You can never have enough.
Just try to branch out with your ideas!

I only have a few characters active at any given time, but I see no reason to limit yourself if you have a great idea. However, what you do with said alts is what matters. Serious multiworlding, where your RP is seriously negatively influenced from RPing another char at the same time, is annoying to other players. (Some multiworlding is fine, I think.) I also think it's bad form to RP your character into a really important position in a storyline or plot and then drop them for a new character. I've done that once or twice and I feel bad about it. It leaves people hanging. At least RP an exit for your character. And if you have so many alts that they're all flat and unloved, that's not fair too. X) So I'd say to make as many alts as you can devote time to, be it a small or large amount of time, and keep the feelings of others in mind when you drop a char or make a new one.
I have, at minimum 27. There's alot i forget about though.
i used to have over a hundred, but now, i only have ten; and only one of them, currently is active. i try not to be one of those who have a lot of alts, and who never uses them. x3 makes me feel bad.
As of right now I have 58 alts, but of those, 3 are very active and about 5 others are semi-active. Some of them are just names I thought were pretty and wanted to hold for future ideas. Some are ideas I had a flash inspiration for and just HAD TO CREATE, but have yet to really flesh them out. I don't think creativity should be limited. When you can't manage them anymore, however, that is too many alts.
Everyone makes good points. Thankyou for yalls thoughts so far
I have about 90ish or so but only 10 are active and about 3 or 4 I play all the time. But I never limit myself, I like to see how far I can stretch my imagination and creative and don't worry about the limit of a number

That's the worst! I hate when people do that. It's happened to me more times than I care to think about...
I've got about thirty alts, most of which have never been used, because try as I might no one wants to play with them. I usually give them three weeks of exposure, trying to rope people into playing (whispering, calling their name in a post, leaving messages on websites) and if no one takes the bait, I move on, but keep them in mind next time I need one.
Currently I have two alts that rp on a regular basis, and that's because people I played with one time were impressed enough to make a character to play with me.

I've got a lot of alts, I think easily 60, but I only have three active at any time in one dream. (I can't multiworld, I've tried, I usually end up paying more attention to one dream anyway)
It's really my limit and I notice it, three is the max I can run, any more and I start using certain characters less then I should.
I rarely ditch alts when I enter them somewhere though, I only start actively using a character when I'm really really certain I want to play them, and I even then I first use them in casual conversations and seek out various types of encounters before I rp them into positions.

How many are too many? When you start forgetting about them, or other character activity starts actively suffering for what you're trying to upkeep. That's my rule on it. Some characters are okay to only play once a month--like with Luci, that's just his thing, jobs keep him away for long periods. But I just retired half of my cast at the end of a major storyline. My others were suffering, the other characters had served their purpose and deserved their ever-afters. More than multiple characters I enjoy deep characters who can feel like living individuals, something real and almost tangible. The more characters I juggle, the more difficult it becomes to render them well.
So... as many as you have time to handle, and no more! That's my vote.

Goodness, I don't think I've ever had more than 15 alts at any given time, some of which were only for dream uploading. At this moment I have 8; one is a dream uploader, one is my very first alt, one is my main, one is Seth, and the other three are for anonymous dream-hopping.
But I agree in part with what everyone else has stated!
