Ever seen or played a game, movie, etc where a person summons a creature or other entity from different world to do his/her bidding?
In short yc is that summoner. And mc is the creature(s) being summoned.
I'd prefer that the duration of single summon itself would be limited but once successfully performed the summon the summoner have some method of communication to the other world.

Magic is fairly common. Players and NPCs important to the tale may have it. Mistborn.
Renaissance
Combat is woven into the storyline and could come to the forefront if the characters seek it out.
Romance is desired but not required, and will balance evenly with other plot.
