I won't say a lot but these three facts that need to hold true, then see what it leads to :^)
1. The character is a villain to an extreme degree.
2. The character's background/backstory is, surprisingly, nearly too simple to be true.
3. The character is poor asf but always pretends to have money.

Consider: Their backstory is that they had a pretty normal life, and has nothing to do with why they are a villain. Maybe they are literally just evil because some people are evil- in other words, just for the heck of it.
Alternatively, since they're very poor, maybe it's just that they have always been struggling to survive due to a lack of money... Maybe they started doing villainous things in order to gain money that they needed to live, but then decided that being a villain was actually fun, so they went even further.
OR! Maybe they just thought "If I have to suffer this life of poverty... Well then, EVERYONE ELSE will suffer too!", and that is what lead them to do evil things- just out of spite. They make peoples' lives awful just because their own life was bad and they want to give that suffering to whoever they can.
Since they are poor, but pretend to have a lot of money, maybe they wear clothing that looks very fancy and expensive from afar, but if you look more closely you'll see that it's just cheaply made crap. Also, if they have any kind of superpowers, maybe one of them is illusions? It would make the "making cheap clothes look fancy" thing easier to pull off, and could extend to other stuff as well (like, making everything they own, and their whole house/apartment or wherever they live, look much nicer than it truly is as well.) If they don't use illusions or something similar to make their home look lavish and fancy, maybe they just try extremely hard to keep people away from it so they won't find out about the villain's lack of money. To the extent where people think (either seriously or jokingly) that they are hiding horrible, disturbing things in their home, when in actuality it's just cheap furniture and chipped paint.

It was actually a desire for social standing that drove them to villainous ways. They're of a race which in your universe has a reputation for being unintelligent, ugly, 'lower class' (for example, an ork). And every day, they'd be minding doing their hard labour, watching all the beautiful noble folk blissfully unware of the lower classes. Insults came naturally from their lips. They'd deliver orders and expect them to be obeyed. They could always lay blame with others and would be believed. Furthermore, they knew they'd be believed and used this to advantage.
A noblewoman was chastising your character for something simple - getting mud on her dress perhaps. And finally they snap. They kill her in a fit of rage, and steal all her clothes and jewels.
An ork in a noblewoman’s dress is very obviously… not wealthy. Despite how hard they try. They don’t have the education to speak like a noblewoman. They don’t have the staff to groom them, to clean their hair and nails, and make sure they are bathed every day. They do not have a carriage, and must traipse through the mud in their petticoats.
When people call them out on it, they fly into a fit of rage, and enact violence against them. After all, they are now a noblewoman, and they are always correct.

Thank you, both of you! I'm getting very deep with this character.
Also gave me an idea for a second character xD
