"Well that's interesting. Anyway how do you feel about working here?" Grace finished her soup and put the spoon in the empty bowl.
"I think I'll like working here." David replied with a smile, finishing his food as well. "May I take your bowl?" He asked, standing up and picking his own plate up.
Grace smiled at him. "Of course. Take time to meet the other staff while you're back there, okay?"
"Yes Ma'am." He added with a big smile, carefully picking up Grace's plate and bringing it back to the kitchen. He managed to get the door open with his foot, his tongue sticking out in concentration. David walked over to the sink, unaware that somebody in the kitchen might be watching him.
All of the maids looked over at the same time when David entered the kitchen, whispers flowing through the crowd. "That's him? He really is young." One of them said. "He just arrived today. I feel sorry for him. He must've been through a lot."
David put the dishes in the sink and dragged the stool back over to the sink, standing on it to start washing the dishes.
Emily walked over and stood by David, watching him do the dishes. "Welcome back. Did you enjoy the food I made you?"
David paused and looked at Emily, nodding his head. "Yes, Thank you. It was really good." He said with a big smile.
"He's so cute!" All of the other maids ran over and began to hug David all at the same time, moving Emily out of the way and unable to help
David was so shocked when all the maids hugged him that he stiffened, not used to being hugged so many times in one day. Nevertheless, he let them hug him, afraid he might hurt their feelings if he didn't.
The maids put the boy down and then began to ask him questions one at a time. "So your names David? You look to be seven is that right?" One of them asked. Looking at all of the maids they were all beautiful girls that seemed to either be in their teens or early twenties.
David answered all the questions they asked him, his hands stuffed in his pockets. "Yes my name is David, and yes I'm actually 7 and a half." He replied, noticing that all the maids were woman and in their teens or early twenties.
"You know what... He looks like someone don't you think?" One mentioned. The others looked closely at David. "Yeah, he does. If he had black hair he'd look like an exact clone of him. Maybe that's why he caught the mistress' attention." Another acknowledged.
David looked at the maids, not understanding what they were talking about. "What, Who?" David said, trying to understand what the heck they were talking about.
Emily managed to get her way through the crowd. "They're talking about the mistresses younger brother William. He died along with her parents six years ago."
"Oh..." He said, his eyes downcast. That explained why she was hugging him in the carriage and being so nice to him.
"Then again William isn't the only one he looks like. William was part of a pair of twins. And now that I think about it the rest of the family but the other brother was buried. And if I recall his name was also David." One of them mentioned. Emily looked at him and put her hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry David, mistress grace cares about you because you're you. Not because you look like her brothers."
David nodded and smiled up at Emily, turning to go back to washing the dishes. "Thanks." He said in a distracted voice, unsure what to think about the story.
Emily clapped her hands once. "Alright ladies dinners over so its time for cleanup." The maids got back to washing the other dishes and some walked out of The kitchen to do other things.
David finished the dishes and put them on the rack to dry, walking over to where Emily was to ask her something. When he got beside her he tugged the hem of her shirt, unable to reach her shoulder.
