"What is it David?" Emily asked looking down at her.
"Can I help with anything else?" He asked, letting go of her shirt.
Emily thought for a minute. "No, not at the moment. You can go back and sit with the mistress if you like. Although she's probably in the gardens at the back of the house."
David nodded, running out of the kitchen to see if Grace was in the dining room still.
Grace was getting up from her chair when she saw David. "Hello again David. Is there something you needed?"
"Can I help you with anything?" He asked, coming to a halt next to her.
Grace thought for a moment and then smiled at him. "No. But I would like you to accompany me to the gardens."
"Okie dokie." David said with a goofy grin, giving a salute to Grace.
Grace grabbed him by the hand and lead him out of the dining hall, past the stairs, and tbegan to walk through a long hallway that lead to the gardens. The hallway was decorated with portraits of grace and her family. Some were only her and her parents, others were of her and her two younger brothers. Eventually she stopped at a portrait that looked recent and stared at it. The portrait was of her whole family, her parents in the back and her and her brother's in front of them. "My brother's were a lot like you, David. You would've gotten along well."
"They look nice." David said, looking at the picture. "I can't remember my parents at all, just the faces of the men who killed them." He said with a shiver, tears beginning to form in the corners of his eyes.
Grace moved her hand to his shoulder. "Don't cry David. I'm sorry I brought back painful memories for you."
David wiped the tears off with the back of his hand, nodding slowly. "It's ok." He said with a sad smile. "Can we go to the garden now?" He asked, trying to change the subject. "I'm really good with plants."
"Sure." Grace grabbed his hand again and lead him to two normal sized doors at the end of the hallway. Grace pushed one open revealing a beautiful garden filled with flowers that grew close to each other. In the center was a small shrine with two chairs set up next to them. "I usually come out here to read. Its nice out here, isn't it?"
"It's very nice out here." David said, relived that they were out of the house. He walked over to some of the flowers and gently touched the petals, the flowers responding immediately. The flowers that hadn't bloomed yet immediately bloomed under his touch, surprising him.
Grace giggled a little bit. "Seems you are good with flowers, David. Anyway I'm going to go sit down. Feel free to join me." Grace went and sat in one of the chairs.
"Ok/" David nodded, turning to face the flowers again. He saw a little one and cupped it in his hand, the little flower growing to the size of the others. "There you go little one." He whispered, walking over to where Grace was sitting.
Grace smiled at him and looked back at the shrine. "Maybe its crazy, but I know one of my brother's isn't dead. We didn't find him that night so he might've been kidnapped. If he is I hope he's alright."
David nodded, trying not to cry again. He turned to some roses and picked one carefully, taking a glass he found sitting nearby that the maids hadn't cleared yet. He held he rose until small roots started to grow from the bottom and put the rose in the cup, making sure that Grace couldn't see what he was doing. He gathered some dirt from the flower bed and surrounded the roots of the rose, carefully making sure it had enough room for now. With a smile, he turned back to Grace and produced the glass from behind his back. "Here, when it outgrows the cup we can put it in a flower pot so it can make a bush." David said, handing her the cup.
Tears formed in grace's eyes. "Thank you David. You're a sweet boy."
David smiled and stood up, giving Grace a big hug. "You remind me of my big sister, before she went missing." He said, laying his head on her shoulder.
