Hi guys!
As most of you already know, I'm super duper into knitting right now and am working on various projects to learn how to knit new items. Currently I'm working with charted patterns, which enable me to knit things like the RPR logo! I don't have any projects with the logo finished yet because I'm just knitting at my leisure, but you can check out my knitting thread here. Projects closer to the end of the thread are my more recent ones.
I talked to Kim and offered to make knitted items as prizes for this year's Epic Week contests, but there were a number of concerns that prompted us to decide against it for now. So that's where this comes in. I still want to knit some RPR items, and with Kim's permission I'm looking at either pre-knitting batches of items or making custom items for you guys!
Currently I'm trying to get a sense of if this is something the community is interested in, and it will also help me figure out what I need to keep in mind if the interest is large enough!
Would you kindly help me out by filling out the following poll?
I may have more questions in the future, but these are the ones that are currently at the top of my list and determine how this will go. Please pass this on to your friends - the more info I have, the better!
Thank you so much for reading even if you don't participate.

Would you kindly help me out by filling out the following poll?
Quote:
I'm currently able to knit any of the following items and incorporate the RPR logo (with or without shield, depending on the item size):
- Hats
- Scarves
- Mitts
- Dishcloths
- Socks
- Ponchos
- Phone/Tablet covers
- Cat or dog blankets
- (Grocery/Market) Bags (small and medium sized)
- Tea cozies
- Doggy sweaters
Feel free to be as elaborate in your answers as you want. The more information I have, the better.
1. Would you be interested in purchasing any of the above items?
2. Which item(s) are you interested in most?
3. Do you have a wool, acrylic or cotton allergy?
4. Would you be okay with the items being knit in a home that has cats? (Note: this is mainly for allergy reasons. I just cannot guarantee a cat-hair free product owning three cats.)
5. If you order items that need to be knitted custom to your size (like socks), how long are you willing to wait for the item to be shipped to you?
6. Would you be willing to take measurements (inches or cms) based on my instructions for a custom sized item?
Knitted items, depending on their size, can take anywhere from 5 hours to 50 hours or more to produce. If I were to charge regular hourly rates it would get expensive stupidly fast. I'm also located in the Netherlands and will be shipping out from here. I try to find yarn as cheap as possible, and projects rarely reach or exceed €10 in yarn materials unless they're really big or require specialty yarn.
Please don't be afraid to be honest with your answer to the following question - anything is fine, I wouldn't be asking if it wasn't.
7. Which of the following payment options would you prefer?
A ) I only want to cover the expenses of the yarn used in the project and the shipping to my country.
B ) I want to cover the expenses of the yarn used in the project, the shipping to my country and tip extra for the worked hours at my discretion.
C ) Other. (Please elaborate!)
8. Would you want to receive a receipt for the yarn and shipping costs?

The idea is a really cool one but I'm afraid it's just not in the budget for me to order anything online at all. I'd be interested in seeing images of any products you do put together though!
Thank you! I added tea cozies to the list as well.
Poll time!
1. Would you be interested in purchasing any of the above items?
I do actually have an interest in the hat and scarf, since my old ones are either missing or are somehow ripped to shreds by an evil force known as siblings. Also socks! I can always use socks!
2. Which item(s) are you interested in most?
Probably the socks and the hat. Mostly the socks, though. SAWKS
3. Do you have a wool, acrylic or cotton allergy?
Nope. Unless your products have wasp bites in them I'm perfectly fine.
4. Would you be okay with the items being knit in a home that has cats? (Note: this is mainly for allergy reasons. I just cannot guarantee a cat-hair free product owning three cats.)
Not at all. My dog might go nuts over it but I doubt it.
5. If you order items that need to be knitted custom to your size (like socks), how long are you willing to wait for the item to be shipped to you?
I'm a patient man. I could easily wait up to a month. These aren't products I need instantly.
6. Would you be willing to take measurements (inches or cms) based on my instructions for a custom sized item?
Sure, if you're patient enough to deal with me because I suck at measuring and things generally requiring numbers.
Please don't be afraid to be honest with your answer to the following question - anything is fine, I wouldn't be asking if it wasn't.
7. Which of the following payment options would you prefer?
B ) I want to cover the expenses of the yarn used in the project, the shipping to my country and tip extra for the worked hours at my discretion. This method seems only fair for the work you have to put into these things
8. Would you want to receive a receipt for the yarn and shipping costs?
It could never hurt. If at all possible that would be nice, but it's not a must.

Thank you Rynh! This is hugely helpful.
1. Would you be interested in purchasing any of the above items? Yes I already have a RPR tshirt. Might as well get the whole set going. I wonder if they give a set bonus.
2. Which item(s) are you interested in most? I'd consider both hats and socks. Hats are my favourite. As for socks I live in Asia and it's sometimes hard to buy socks large enough to fit my feet. Yeah, I could go for some really thick winter socks.
3. Do you have a wool, acrylic or cotton allergy? Nope!
4. Would you be okay with the items being knit in a home that has cats? (Note: this is mainly for allergy reasons. I just cannot guarantee a cat-hair free product owning three cats.) No problems!
5. If you order items that need to be knitted custom to your size (like socks), how long are you willing to wait for the item to be shipped to you? I'm a patient person. I understand that handmade items are not spawned by magic and take time and effort to create. Having an upfront estimate would be nice though.

B. I'd feel super bad if I didn't pay you for your time. You aint my grandma, and you shouldn't have to do this for free. I also wouldn't mind if you set a flat fee for your time.
8. Would you want to receive a receipt for the yarn and shipping costs? Nah, I'm not super fussed about that. If I pay too much for materials, consider it extra pocket money for your time.

1. Would you be interested in purchasing any of the above items?
Possibly, should money allow it! Most of it is going to my savings and/or car right now. ._.
2. Which item(s) are you interested in most?
I'd be interested in a scarf for sure. I love me a knitted scarf!
3. Do you have a wool, acrylic or cotton allergy?
Never have, and I hope I never will.

KIIITTTTTIIIIIIES. *ahem* Yep, I have 0 allergies to worry about.
5. If you order items that need to be knitted custom to your size (like socks), how long are you willing to wait for the item to be shipped to you?
A month? I am stupidly patient, and I don't know how long this stuff takes. It takes whatever time it takes!
6. Would you be willing to take measurements (inches or cms) based on my instructions for a custom sized item?
Proooobably, if such a thing needed to happen!

Le answer is B, especially if said project would be a larger one that's more time consuming!
8. Would you want to receive a receipt for the yarn and shipping costs?[/quote]
Oh heck yes would want receipt. Otherwise my accountant mother would never let me hear the end of it, even to my grave.
Even if I have few plans to purchase anything at this time (as I said, my money is going to savings and the car atm), I hope these answers help you out!

Thank you Claine and Copper!! I appreciate it tons!
1. Would you be interested in purchasing any of the above items? Of couuurse!
2. Which item(s) are you interested in most? Hats! Scarves. Socks... Mitts. Maybe a tea cozy, idk what that is but I like tea so. ;. Haha.
3. Do you have a wool, acrylic or cotton allergy? Nope!
4. Would you be okay with the items being knit in a home that has cats? I have five cats and a dog so I don't care at all hahaha.
5. If you order items that need to be knitted custom to your size (like socks), how long are you willing to wait for the item to be shipped to you? As long as it takes really. I'd just ask we kept in contact about it, or that you'd give me updates every now and again. .
6. Would you be willing to take measurements (inches or cms) based on my instructions for a custom sized item? Yes!
7. Which of the following payment options would you prefer?
B! As an artist I'd hate to be paid for just the cost of what I'm using (at least in traditional cases) because I feel like it wouldn't be worth my time. Or that, rather, my time wasn't worth much. So paying for your efforts would be a good idea, even if in the form of a tip. But I suggest making set prices + shipping and stuff.
8. Would you want to receive a receipt for the yarn and shipping costs? Sure thing! I usually throw them away but I also get incredibly confused about where my money goes until I see receipts haha. At least with things I order online.

2. Which item(s) are you interested in most? Hat, scarf and socks.
3. Do you have a wool, acrylic or cotton allergy? Negatory
4. Would you be okay with the items being knit in a home that has cats? Yes. That's what laundry is for.
5. If you order items that need to be knitted custom to your size (like socks), how long are you willing to wait for the item to be shipped to you? As long as it takes. I'm a patient kind of guy, surprisingly.
6. Would you be willing to take measurements (inches or cms) based on my instructions for a custom sized item? I've done it before!
7. Which of the following payment options would you prefer? Big fan of B. If I'm paying for materials, I should pretty dang well pay for the quality and time. It's not a 99 cent cheeseburger, it's hand-knitted stuff.
8. Would you want to receive a receipt for the yarn and shipping costs? Not sure of what the question means, but having a receipt would be nice for record-keeping and shipping-insurance reasons.

Thank you guuuuuuys!
Mostly because of option A, I imagine when I go out to buy the yarn for the commissioned project, people'd want to get a receipt of that. Also shipping can get expensive, and I imagine people'd be more comfortable having a shipping receipt to ensure they didn't pay too much for that!
Oh damn, yes. I keep forgetting that I can do so many things, rofl.
Added doggy sweaters to the list!

1. Would you be interested in purchasing any of the above items?
Yes, scarfs are always awesome and so are socks. If i had a small dog, a doggy sweater would be cute.
2. Which item(s) are you interested in most?
SOCKS, cause socks rock.
3. Do you have a wool, acrylic or cotton allergy?
Allergic to polyester, just cotton works.
4. Would you be okay with the items being knit in a home that has cats?
Sure, I love cats. And for people with allergies, I am sure that washing the items would help.
5. If you order items how long are you willing to wait for the item to be shipped to you?
Hm, that depends. If its custom made a few weeks, maybe months. Depending if I want to gift them, or buy them for myself.
6. Would you be willing to take measurements based on my instructions for a custom sized item?
Well, yes. Otherwise it would not fit, right? In cm, please.
7. Which of the following payment options would you prefer?
(C) I think it is ok to charge not just the shipment and the yarn but your work aswell. They can always tip you, if they want.
8. Would you want to receive a receipt for the yarn and shipping costs?
It surely would not be wrong, but I don't think it would be necessary.
Suggestion for items:
- Headbands
- Hammock (?)

Thank you Jane!
Headbands sound like a good idea too! There are so many variations on them I'll have to look for a specific type that lets me use the logo somehow (some headbands are too thin to work in any image).
I'm not sure what you mean with hammocks though. I don't think anything I can knit will be durable enough to hold an adult in it!

True. I don't know why I mentioned them. I think I just found the idea adorable.
You know, this might be a stupid idea, may I suggest an option?
How about an option to order a customized item? Obviously this wouldn't be cheap, but it might really garner interest. Maybe a scarf with a simple version of your favorite character for example? Of course that might be too much, but maybe their choice of color, phrases and simple art if possible?

This sounds really cool in theory, but in practice it wouldn't be doable.
The first challenge is, in what way would the character be simplified? For the majority of projects, the absolute limit of the design is often 100 pixels wide and 100 pixels tall - each stitch and each row counts as 1 pixel. Some projects require thicker yarn but aren't very big, so it would be reduced to 50 pixels or less. The RPR logo I'm knitting is 50 pixels wide and will be 63 rows tall. It's 13 inches wide! This is the regular size yarn I use for most projects, so it's not hard to imagine how a design will suffer and get lost in the end result. For small projects I'm forced to use only the RPR letters rather than the shield for this very reason.
There's also the matter of colors. How many colors would I have to use? There's a chance that I will only need a couple of yards for each color from skeins that are 130 yards long. I still need to buy the whole skein even if I don't use all of it on a project, so how am I going to calculate this easily to commissioners?
So characters on knitted pieces are an awesome idea, but not really feasible. Simple art isn't really simple in this context either, unfortunately.
Phrases are much more realistic, and I already intend on letting people pick their own colors for these projects. That's no hassle!
