Hm... The diagonals ahead of me seem to have stopped showing the threat level until I move next to or above (and assumable below?) them. 
I have definitely noticed some occasional inconsistencies about where the walruses bother to scout
This seems pretty consistent at the moment.
Seems like it's specifically the lower diagonals that just aren't working.
