My damage taken is rapidly catching up with my damage dealt. 
He missed like 5 attacks and then critted me. Reminds me of D&D when I do good on everything except death saves.

also do messages in a bottle give you empty bottles when opening them because I'm not sure I've been receiving those?
"Dragon" has historically been a very broadly-used term that has often been interchangeable with just "monster" or "beast."
Yes, using a message in a bottle should give you both a little 1-time message to read and leave you with an empty bottle..
