I've been hanging around various RP groups for years, but looking back on my experiences I've realized that I've yet to play, see or even hear about a Cyberpunk-setting RP. I've been in hundreds of fantasy (high and low) groups, more than a few supernatural settings, several future/sci-fi space-type settings, and a loose collection of other random groups in various others. This one eludes me still, which is a shame because it's my absolute favorite sub-genre of science fiction.

I have an alternate theory that while it's never played absolutely straight, ala "Neuromancer" or "Deus Ex", certain traits of it tend to get co-opted into other settings. For example, hackers in modern-day supernatural storylines, body modification/robots and AI in space-travel settings, and so forth. Am I wrong and I've just been missing them all this time? (Please say yes) Or is it really just overlooked?

Also, anyone else have a particular setting that they've wanted to try but never had the chance?

I've wanted to try Cyberpunk as well but never got a chance to. I'm also a big Wheel of Time fan and for a while worked on a Pathfinder conversion for the setting, but it never ended up being fully developed. I like how the magic works in that universe though and setting it after the events of the books allows just about anything one can imagine, or perhaps it just stoked my imagination.

Probably the rarest setting for our groups was always a modern or sci-fi one, we tried playing Star Wars once or twice but it never seemed to last. We briefly did a post apocalyptic game too that was fun but ultimately short-lived. I'd love to do a Star Trek themed game sometime as well.

There are a lot of settings that I've been curious about, but just simply never got around to trying. The biggest reason is mostly because I don't know enough about other settings to even know what kind of character fits in that world.

For that matter, I have absolutely zero clue what Cyberpunk is defined like in the RP world, so I wouldn't even be able to tell you if I want to try it. o.O

From what I understand, Cyberpunk is Sci-Fi in which humanity has not improved for its innovations. As one book I read described it, "mankind is the same old bastard it always has been and is proud of it." Mega corporations run everything, police are corrupt, etc etc.

In a Cyberpunk RP setting, generally players will be misfits and outcasts of various flavors. Not necessarily a criminal or outlaw, mind you, but it's not called "punk" for nothing. At the very least, expect to be on one end or the other of a VAST divide between social classes.

There's a ton I could say, with all the themes and tropes and so forth, but to sum it up it works by the same rules and structure as the classic "noir" genre of storytelling.

I've not tried a post apocalyptic setting yet, though I always liked the idea of being in a more survival-centric role.

This description makes me think of Mirror's edge, first of all. Otherwise I don't know, I have seen a couple mirror's edge RP's though.

It may be rare in the freeform arena like we usually do here, but Shadowrun is one of the more popular non-Dungeons and Dragons PNP games on the market.

Although, that might be because you can have a cyberlinked minigun AND be an orc. heh.

Having a minigun makes everything better :)
