The gentle waves of the ocean water rushed over its front feet, feeling cool and refreshing. Albe squeaked in a happy high pitch. It vibrated in faint resemblance of a purr. The gryphon had just chased off half a dozen men from the shoreline and felt immensely pleased with itself for accomplishing such a fine and noble feat. No sharks or dolphins for them today! Or ever if it could help it.
It tilted its head at the foamy waves and, without any warning beyond a faint tremble in its folded wings, started hopping around to splash everything nearby. Which, coincidentally, was mostly just sand. All the while it played with the foam and enjoyed the rush of water on its feathered and rubbery skin, Albe made many happy noises and was greeted by the group of dolphins swimming close to the shore.

The atmosphere at the beach seemed almost perfect. Carefree until an ear splitting screech echoed from the trees and scattered the nearby birds. A spear shot through the gap in the forest and landed flat into the sand, followed quickly by a charging heap of frazzled turquoise feathers.
The gryphon had one wing dragging slightly on the ground with an arrow sticking out of the shoulder and as it came over the edge of the sandy slope onto the beach it tripped and stumbled down it and ran towards the water, for some reason not attempting to fly.
The reason would become clear as huntsmen wielding bows and arrows appeared at the verge of the forest and aimed towards Kingfisher. The beast spotted the larger gryphon and was quick to approach it "Oy oy wizard..." it crowed nervously and lowered it's head, looking back at the men with their weapons.
The group seemed uncertain as they spotted the larger gryphon and their horses backed up a little while they muttered to each other about what to do.

Albe was on full alert the second it heard the approaching thunder of hooves beating the ground. Seconds later, the other gryphon appeared, clearly injured, and ran its way to the guardian. A shrill screech warned the humans as Albe wedged itself between Kingfisher and the hunters, wings flaring out to their full length.
Although it usually did not meddle in the affairs of others, kin always fell under its protection. It was a deeply ingrained instinct it could not ignore.
It regarded the hunters with stark glowing eyes, head tilted to one side, then the other, judging its potential opponents critically. Were they wizards? Was that was its kin had meant? Able flared its wings again, this time allowing the waves behind them to rise dramatically and come crashing down with a loud roar. Water engulfed their paws, if Kingfisher did not take flight or hop away, and ebbed away as its display of power finished.

Kingfisher slunk low to the ground as Albe stepped between him and the hunters, twitching nervously and watching the water rise and crash down behind them.
"It's a powerful monster!" the man on horseback behind their leader cried out and two other horses reared up and almost dropped their riders into the dirt. "Retreat! We'll get it another time! It can't go far" the leader called to his men and turned to ride off back into the thick shroud of forest that sat at the edge of the beach, followed closely by his men.
It was only then Kingfisher again felt safe to move, slowly dragging its feet through the sand to drop down and sit alongside Albes paws, peering up at the gryphon with shrinking pupils deep with thought before turning its head and observing the bloody arrow in its poor shoulder. Fisher tried a few times to reach the arrow with its own beak but couldn't quite get it at the angle it was at and instead looked up at Albe expectantly "OY! IDIOT! OY OY!" it shouted loudly before clicking its beak a few times and nodding in the direction of the arrow.
