Yep. You heard me right.
As some of you may recall, we had to put down our family dog of 13.5 years old in February, after he had a stroke. He was a lovely dog and we loved him very very much, but when we got him, my parents both worked full time and my little sister and I were still young (10 and 12). Although he was never short of love, attention and all the things he needed to be happy, we made some mistakes raising him and it prevented my parents from going on vacations and doing more things with the dog.
Now that Binky passed away, my parents still want another dog. Their schedules and work situations have given them ample room to spend a lot of time on a new puppy and raise it to be a more versatile companion and not make the same mistakes as before. My parents decided not to adopt from a shelter, because they want to make sure the breed is compatible with them. (Friends and family who adopted from our shelters had a lot of trouble with their adopted dogs, plus our nearby shelters have some truly weird policies that make adopting incredibly unappealing.)
My dad signed up for a Wetterhoun breeding waiting list (which my sister lovingly calls 'daddy's pregnancy'). The Wetterhoun is somewhat of a sibling breed to the Stabijhoun (Binky's breed). Only about a thousand of them exist and breeding is carefully monitored. DNA banks register each puppy's DNA, and before two dogs can breed their DNA profiles are compared for optimal matching, as well as any genetic conditions, and need to be approved. All the breeders are subjected to being monitored, and most dogs only have a handful of litters in their lifetime from and until a certain age and number of cycles. In 2013, only 54 males and 51 females were born in the entire country.
I know that a lot of people encourage adoption, and I usually do too because some breeds are bred too much and a lot of breeders are just in it for the money. In this case however, I fully support buying puppies from responsible breeders of such a rare breed! (Especially because these dogs are such an excellent fit for our family.)
Wetterhoun puppies look like little fuzzy bears! They come in several colors (brown with white, black with white, fully brown and fully black), although I find all of them equally pretty. As adults, they kind of look perpetually grumpy/frowny/grim due to their broad heads.
I know that a bunch of you are really into dogs, and I know that a breed like the Wetterhoun is really uncommon in other parts of the world. I'm really excited! We don't know yet when we get to buy a puppy, but we're #8 on the (nation wide) list last I checked. As soon as a litter is available from any breeder in the country, we'll be getting a call and get to go see the litter.

FLUFFY.
Awe so cute!
I wish I could have a dog (or cat) as a pet where I live, but sadly the apartment manager won't let us. Grr. Drives me crazy not having one since I grew up with animals always around me haha. Oh well hopefully can build our own place soon then I shall have many dogs and cats.

...we have pet snails.
Most places seem to be cool with terrarium animals.

Awww, that looks like such a cute puppy, Sanne! And it will surely be a great companion. As with any breed, the right training can really help the dog to blend seamlessly into the home.
I had to do some quick research about the breed since it is so rare! Apparently it shares a similar line back to where we in the US get Spaniels. I thought I recognized that curly fur--if not the broad head.
I hope it all works out! Good luck--and maybe when they get the puppy, you can post some pictures?

Yep! The Stabyhoun also has some roots with the Spaniels, although they've been their own breed now for a long time.
And as soon as my parents get the puppy, I'm going to floooood you all with pictures.
Ha! I was just talking to someone about the efforts to control and save this breed and how it could be effective on other rare breeds! They are super cool Sanne, and I love how focused they are on genetic health. When my breed was faced with extinction they made a lot of foolish mistakes that we are paying for now I truly hope that what they are doing for this breed will do wonders for it's genetic health as well as help build it's population back up. Congratulations on your daddy's pregnancy, when this pup comes to fruition he will be the steward of a very very neat breed with a special specimen. I'm excited for them.

Thank you!! I'm still super excited and we've been doing a lot of (new) research on raising dogs. Although I don't live with my parents anymore I will introduce my cats to the puppy early on so he's comfortable with them.
Currently my parents moved up to #5 on the list, and a new litter will be born in approximately 2-3 weeks. There's a chance we may be eligible for a puppy very soon!
Aww!
Gah! Teh cute is infecting mah brain @_@
Also, that title... xD
Also, that title... xD
I'm sorry...but I saw this and instantly though...again?! xD
WE'RE GETTING A PUPPY!!!!
A litter of 5 females and 2 males was born 4 weeks ago (towel color determines sex!) and we're going to end up getting one of the two males. Whichever one it'll be, he'll be coming home in 4 weeks. I'M SO EXCITED!

PICTURES TIME! My dad visited the people who bred the puppies today and got to hold the little darling we're going to get. We can pick him up in the beginning of August when he's between 7.5-8 weeks old. My dad looks so smitten!!
Edit: Also included a video of the litter!
