A lot of people RP for different reasons. Some of us just have downtime we want to burn. Some of us have the idea for a book or something that we don't know quite how to fill out yet, and so we rough out prototypes in RP. Some of us want to be entertainment, and GM for other people. Some of us want something else entirely.

What's your goal?";
My goal in RP is to loose myself in that story that is going on, like i loose myself in a great fantasy book. To get that feeling that I'm there in that story going along with whats going on. And to relieve stress and such and relax after a hard day! =D
I agree with Silver Wolf. When I RP, I do it because I just love it. I love getting lost in the story between my character and someone else's. During my RPs I laugh with them, I cry with them, and I get angry with them. It is indeed like reading an awesome book, except I get to write it! I got hooked on RP a few years ago, and I've never really thought about this question before. My excuse to my parents is that RP helps me write better, and actually it does. But I think what I WANT to accomplish is just the goal of having fun. Of being able to write (for I love to write), with other people, and enjoy it.

My goal is fun. Nothing more, just plain ol' fun.

It could be the most horrible, cliche-ridden RP in the world but if I'm having fun, I couldn't care less! :3
Fun-- topmost priority in an rp. If I'm not having fun, I probably won't do it.

Creativity-- the juices get to get a flowin', baby.

Writing-- ... I want to be a writer, career wise; far as I've always seen it, this is some form of practice for my writing/story telling skills!

*repetitive?*
Everyone else said what I wanted to say.... so....

Ditto! :D

I really love making characters, and RP gives me an outlet for them if they don't have a story to live in. :)

I'll be the first to say that I use RP to feel more awesome than my RL self.

In a non-self-inserty-cliche-burns-our-eyes-way.

... there were too many dashes in there, but I concur with Heim. It just... didn't come to mind while I was posting. Ahem. *mutters something about her repetitiveness and slinks away*

Hell, I don't even mind self inserts. Heimdall's mine, after all. That doesn't mean you can make it a crappy character, but the act of self insertion itself I don't think is a sin! :P
Oh, well, I didn't mean that to mean that ALL SI's are bad (*glancing at Lauren B*), but...

... actually, I may be a touch conditioned in that aspect. I grew up with lots of dissing for my own. XD
I RP because I love adventures and stories. Rp isn't limited to game-mechanics, a digital world or the end credits. It's only limited to the players' imagination and it's always something new thanks to interraction with many other players.

So yeah mainly a story addict that likes the ongoign flow of RP and the massive worlds it creates.

I guess it's time to say what my intention is in RP, right?

When I started, it was burning time--ignoring the woes of the real world, and so on. But that was when I was much younger. That was the era I made basic self-inserts, and let myself feel the character's emotions a bit too strongly, like some symbiotic connection.

Over time I divided my thoughts from my characters, and decided playing multiple characters in a setting to begin a story. And then I brought in other friends to do the same. As I designed the setting, I ran the campaign--RP wasn't just to entertain myself, or burn my time, but to entertain plenty of other people, for whatever reason they wanted to be entertained. And what was great was the people I had to grow with. We came up with a real objective: a true story that could be ultimately adapted into a game, wherein the multiple authors gave a broader spread of the rendition of characters but, with everyone's efforts united, didn't feel disjointed--but cooperative.

Sadly we've never gotten to the point of actually developing it, due to a matter of lack of programmers and whatnot. But our system, our story--we all have hope in it. It's just waiting for the right moment.

At this point, I use RP to flesh out ideas for things like that. No, clearly I can't put everything in a game or book, if I play with people who aren't signed into the idea, but at that point it's a matter of developing character responses, and ensuring they're fully fleshed out as individuals even if I have to rewrite the exact parameters later.

So me? A mix of entertaining anyone who is bored, and... well, designing books/games, which I guess falls down to entertaining people again.
Relaxation. Nothing like chilling with some rp and some minecraft after a four hour watch at the end of a sixteen hour day. I'm truly grateful for this site, you guys, and kim for putting it together.
It's a bit of a combination for me. I suppose my interest in other people sparks me to act something besides myself and it pulls me in fast. Having the ability to tailor quirks without any weird looks from other people via RP is fascinating and fun! I like the feeling of an escape as well, but I also like to engross other people into a story as deeply as I am! I'm certain there's more to it in my mind but I find trouble putting it to words that haven't been said.
