"Well it is a bit. It's probably a good idea not to go there" Ethan said. That statement had two meanings: one, its was not safe for her there and two, he didn't want her to see him there. "A lot of crime going on there. It's strange that it's been going on for so long"
"Yeah. I'm probably better off just staying around here." She said sheepishly, smiling awkwardly. "I'd be scared to go into the city at night without someone else with me."
"It is best to go to the city with someone else" he said. "If you don't it would be taking a risk". Ethan knows how the city works and can go there without any trouble. But for someone like Marina, going there would be risky.
Marina nodded, taking in his advice. "Right. Well, I'll remember that if I ever want to go into the city. Maybe, I'll drag you with me so I don't get lost or mugged." She flashed a silly smile for a second before relaxing.
He smiled briefly. "I don't know however if being with another person would change whether or not someone gets mugged" he said. "I just its safer than going on your own"
"Yeah. And probably it's less intimidating. I think most criminals try to target people who are alone." Marina shrugged and smiled softly. "I don't know though... since I'm not a criminal."
"Criminals don't usually target strangers. If they target a certain person its because they want something from him/her." He said. Being out in the city has shown him how other criminals act.
"Oh. Really?" Marina looked curiously at him, wondering how he knew that kind of thing. Maybe he'd read about it. Were there books about that kind of thing? She figured there were. Since there were books written about almost anything.
"Yeah, from what I've noticed." he replied. Ethan has been with these criminals that he has been talking about. Their personalities vary, sometimes they were quite normal, sometimes they were anything but that. "I have noticed the criminals while I was in the city. It's interesting seeing how they work."
"Huh... that's interesting." Marina pondered it. "I'd probably be to scared to be anywhere near a criminal." She looked down. "I guess I'm a wimp like that." Something about being near criminals or thinking about being near criminals made her feel anxious. Though, she didn't really talk about it with most people.
"Though, its not easy to identfy a criminal. It's not clear who they are on first glance, you have to really know them" Ethan says. Again, this is from experience. "I don't think being scared of a criminal is being a wimp, you can never know what they are thinking or going to do"
"I suppose that's true. If we could easily identify criminals then they'd be a lot easier to catch, I guess." Marina leans back a little and looks up at the sky. "But that's how it is with anyone really... you can never tell what they're thinking... or what they might do. You never know when something will go terribly wrong and ruin everything."
"True" he said leaning back and looking up at the sky. "It seems that criminals are like normal people. There isn't any key thing that runs with every criminal, they are all different"
"Hm. Life is always complicated like that." Marina said thoughtfully. "Sometimes even the most unlikely people get caught up in crime without meaning to." She murmured, her gaze getting distant, like she was thinking about something very deeply.
"Yeah" he said turning back to her. "I guess it could happen to anyone, in some way. There are many ways people could be caught up in crime."
Nodding, she smiled a little, trying to cover up her thoughtful expression. But a hint of melancholy still remained in her eyes. "Yeah. Probably. Life is cruel like that."
Ethan nodded and looked at his watch. "I have to go now, see you around some other time?" he said starting to stand up.
