The forest was quiet and dark, with the only lights being the stars above and the glow of firebugs. Owls hummed and crickets sung. Twigs cracked under the weight of the wagon, and the wagon wheels creaked in protest.
"Darn thangs," Fert muttered under his breath, "we'll need to get some oil for those."
He pulled on Bessie's reigns, guiding her away from an old stump. The pup obliged, her tail swaying behind her.
Normally, Fert would be getting ready for bed now, but not tonight. Tonight was different, as he had a few treats to hand out to those lucky enough to pass him.
It was just a matter of time, he was sure.

A short, stocky centaur woman trotted by. Absolutely everything about her said "jaunty," from the way she carried herself to the roguish smile on her face.
"Well hello there!" she calls out, slowing to a walk when she spots the gnome and his dog.

Kris rarely traveled by night, always wary of monsters or people with bad intentions. She considered the latter to be worse than the monsters. There were some people in the next town over that needed her healing skills, and it was important she got there within the next few days. She could go a little longer before finding some place to tuck herself into and get some rest. Dressed in her usual modest, plain colored robes and a cloak of similar quality, she could see well enough in the dark that she didn't feel any need for a source of light. The bit of the illumination from the moon and stars was adequate.
Up ahead, she could hear some people talking before she could see them. Coming up over a small hill, she could see a centaur, and a gnome with a dog and wagon. She typically got on well with gnomes but she did not have any experience with centaurs. This one looked friendly, however. "Hello, hope we're having a good night," she called out, not wanting to alarm anyone as she approached.

Fert hadn't seen the centaur at first, and he had to quickly yank Bessie to a stop. He let out a chuckle, half surprised and half joyous.
"Well howday there!" He exclaimed, tipping his hat, "You startled me, I didn't hear you trot up to us! Must've gotten lost in mah thougths!"
Just then, another traveler came into view. Fert couldn't quite tell what species she was, but that didn't matter to him. All he did was give a tip of his hat once again.
"Howdy! I was just about to invite this nice youngin to mah house! I'm trying out that one thang you young folks do- trickle treat, I believe it's called. You want a quick treat, or do you have to go on yah way?"

Cavalia maneuvers herself to face both Ferrt and the newly arrived Krisuvial. It's a simple enough manuever for her front half, just a two step turn. But the back half has to dance about in a semi-circle to accomodate the turn. She grins brightly as yet another unexpected traveler has turned up on what she expected to be an abandoned road - what a lucky extrovert she!
"You were inviting me to your house!" she laughs, surprised and delighted. "Well, that's mighty forward of you pardner. But now that we have a chaperone," winking toward Krisuvial, "Why not?"

Kris had not expected to be invited to anyone's house. It was rare that she met anyone friendly on the road at night. She knew she should be on guard, but the two of them did look and 'feel' friendly. She just got a very genuine feeling from both of them. The cleric tilted her head with a bit of confusion over 'trickle-treat' but she caught on quickly enough.
How long had she been walking? It might do good to have a rest and some refreshment. "I accept your gracious invitation," she said, giving a ceremonial little bow. "A pleasure to meet you both, my name is Kris," the cleric introduced herself. Chuckling over the remark about being a chaperone, she said, "I have never before met a centaur, what a fantastic surprise."
