Hello,
As most who post on this forum, I am new to this community. I'm curious to know if there are any roleplayers out there, who like me are searching for others to do a group chat style RP. While I can do forum based roleplays, they are not my preference and I like getting instant replies to posts, like how things were done within (RP) chat rooms of MSN and Yahoo, when they existed.

If you are perhaps interested in doing such a thing, I'd like to find a way to get started and maybe even get a group together. If your preference is to individually RP with me, I'll give that a shot as well. I play a variety of roles, but mostly pertaining to characters that I am familiar with from different franchises.

The "launch chat" button on every topic actually allows any topic to be turned into a chat.

Noted. So, I namely have to look for something that interests me within the forums, join one that's "Open" and then launch chat? Do characters need to solely be "Original" or can one be from a particular franchise?

There's actually a variety of answers to those questions, and the best ones are probably somewhere in the help pages.

From what I can understand though:

There's a variety of ways to get involved with an RP. One is, indeed, to look for something that interests you (be it in this board, something in the IC boards that's accepting new people, or something found via the Find RP tool). You can also, as you have done here, announce that you're looking for a game, and it's good that you specified that you want a chat-type RP, as that is still somewhat uncommon here, so far as I can tell. (I prefer para-posts, so I don't look for chat stuffs.) Or, if someone simply has a character you're interested in playing with, you can contact them to ask if they'd like to play - just keep being upfront about wanting a chat sort of thing.

As for types of characters, fan-characters or even playing existing franchise characters is accepted, within certain legal limits. Some franchises don't want anything like fanfiction going up, and because RP is essentially shared story-telling, that would count as fanfiction. Most don't seem to worry about it too much though, nor bother to go after little things in little places like this. You should still make an effort to see if there's any legal restrictions you need to worry about, unless you're a persistent jerk about it after having it taken don or something, you're not likely to get in legal trouble. (But it will be taken down if there's a complaint from the owner.)

Another thing to keep in mind is clicking the "launch chat" button only turns it into a IM-style for you, not everyone else. The other players also need to click the button to start IMing.
