Hello, I hope all is well with whoever takes a read at this. I have a quick question regarding canon characters: what is the policy of using images of said canon characters on this site? I've looked over the rules and, although I understand that it says there is a rule against using copyrighted material that does not belong to you, I can't help but notice people using art pertaining to established IPs and characters in those IPs (movies, games, etc). Is there an exception for more "corporate" art or am I missing something?
I think that rule is more in place to protect online artists from having their work stolen.
You know what I mean? I've seen a couple of users who will just take images they find off of Google or DeviantArt (or any other site that artists will post character concepts and OCs), slap it on a profile, and call it a "faceclaim" for their character. That right there? That's using material that they're not allowed to use. That's theft, and that's bad. That's a biiiig no-no that'll earn you a slap on the wrist, if not the banhammer.
(Thankfully, this hardly ever happens, and when it does, the mods are swift to deal with it.)
People look for fandom RPs all the time! I think that not allowing that would take away a huge chunk of the playerbase here. I'm sure we know that anyone who's roleplaying as a character from a show or a video game likely doesn't own that form of media. As long as they don't steal other people's art (or at least they provide credit to the artists), then I'm sure it's okay.
I'm certain that if the mods/admins had a problem with people playing as canon characters, most of them would've been taken down by now. I've seen plenty of them in the forum games over the 3-ish years I've been here, and they've likely been here for longer.
Just don't steal art. That feels like the main takeaway.
