Hi hello. First-time buyer off Etsy and big-time regretter. I was just popping in here to see if anyone has any tips or inside-knowledge that might help me.
Long story short I ordered something, found out by the seller after putting the order that what they are doing is illegal (they actually admitted this to me), and then would not cancel my order upon my request.
I have contacted Etsy who said they can do nothing except poke the seller and hope they will accept me cancelling the order (they have not and will not).
I'm at a loss. What makes me even more upset is that this is a "etsy's pick" item so I thought I was being really careful. Does anyone know how to cancel and/or stop, refund etc an order if the seller refuses? It seems insane Etsy is not only allowing but endorsing illegal activity and just throwing their hands up at it.

Did you pay by PayPal? If you dispute and provide the conversation as evidence I think it's very likely PayPal would side with you.

No not paypal unfortunately. I did contact the payment service and they simply said they can do nothing except suggest I tell the seller I want to cancel. I'm beginning to think I was talking to a bot though because they were insanely incompetent.

Unfortunately Etsy is a third-party facilitator in this scenario and aren't responsible for what a seller does and doesn't do with an order as long as the seller isn't violating Etsy's TOS. Etsy's TOS states they don't make any rulings on what is and isn't legal.
What kind of item did you purchase? Digital or physical? It may be easier to help you if we have more information on what the product is and why what the seller is doing is illegal, but if that's not an option any other information will be helpful instead.
If you're in the EU, you may have the right of withdrawal within 14 days and don't need to state any reason for the withdrawal provided your purchase meets the requirements for it.

Thank you, yes I had checked the "open a case" but from what I gathered from talking to Etsy's customer support they could only do something in hindsight if the item didn't arrive or something of the like. Its as you say that they don't care about what is legal or not, I am just really bummed out that etsy endorses this and has this shop as "etsy's pick". It is horrible.
The item is a ring and it is made to order so I unfortunately am not covered under the right to withdrawal within 14 days. It is solid gold and the seller was going to mark it as "silver with gold plating" as well as put a number on the parcel that is below the actual worth of the item in order to "streamline the shipping process" (their words) and "lower costs" (also their words). They initially said that they could not write "gold" because the company they use to ship their products do not handle such precious metals, which of course means that they are illegaly shipping it and lying to the company that ships the product and it would absolutely be illegal for me to import gold this way.
The selled did get back to me and found a way to do this sale legally by shipping it with a different company which is a relief, but I am of course still not happy about giving money to a company that I now know do illegal things. Unfortunately by the way it is looking I have to just accept that nobody can help me and the system protects the criminals. The best thing I can do is report the store, but that seems to be the only thing
