SACRED WATERS

"Awww- C'mon Rain, smile for the camera!"

"But, I'm the Camera guy, Its not gonna be in the photo"

"The Camera will tell even if it can't see it- C'mon smile!"

Rain woke to the distant sounds of the video playing on repeat, the train rocking ever so subtly - the spot on the window where his breath had warmed the cold glass had fogged up.

Silencing the phone, Rain looked around the empty seats beside him on the Train, ahead a businesswoman a few rows down smiled faintly as he took notice... She looked like Mom for a second.

Sitting upright in his seat, gathering his bundled hoodie that had acted as a makeshift blanket, he took a look at his phone... No direct messages, only those in the group chat.

A- Have fun on your way over! I hope the train isn't too full

T- He'll be good, It was pretty empty last week, Don't enjoy the Springs without us!

H- Or enjoy them if you want! It would be rude to keep you from them for so long, Now that you're back we should put something together some time!

A- We all missed you, Rain!

-

"I'm sorry to interrupt."
The woman cleared her throat, bringing the young man's attention away from his phone.

"They put in the call for your station while you were asleep, I didn't want you to miss it-" She explained, Rain nodded carefully in thanks.

"Oh- Thank you very much." The young man would bow his head as much as he could sitting down, the woman only laughed a little.

"No worries at all, I frequent this train more often than not, I actually live in the town over from your stop - Forgive me if I'm intruding Young man, but, Your stop, there really isn't anything out there." The woman murmured, concern on her face, though Rain smiled softly as he fixed his glasses.

"I'll be alright, I'm going to stay at the Springs there." Rain murmured, quiet compared to the rocking of the train tracks.

"You're the Spring Keeper's? I didn't know he had a boy- We've met before, he keeps such a lovely place, very historical." The woman made conversation, Rain's smile faltered slightly.

"He's my Uncle, I'll be staying there for the Winter, the cold air is bad for me." He added, and there it was, the classic change of expression.

"I'm very sorry to hear that, I'll put a blessing for you at the shrine next time I pass, Do be sure to keep in good health, you seem like a kind young man." The woman spoke pleasantly, and Rain was thankful for it.

"I'm quite sure I'll be enlisted to help keep the place-" Rain began to respond, only for the next stop to be announced, interrupting the moment, she was a kind stranger, something he'd probably have to get used to.

-

Rain stepped off onto the platform, waving the kind woman goodbye as the train pulled from the station, looking around the empty platform for his Uncle... Well he supposed she did say there wasn't much of anything out there.

Bushes beside the unkempt platform, growth threatening to overtake where the train stopped, it was beautiful in a way, and Rain could already feel the difference, the air here was so much cleaner than inside the city - It was hard to fathom his friends making their way out here from across the country, everyone had moved on with their lives since they were friends in high school, and as had been habit... Rain was left out of the picture.

Crouching down, Rain lifted the camera around his neck, taking a photo of a dewy plant lingering on the edge of the platform where the tracks swept down below.

"Ame Takehashi?" A Man's voice cut through the quiet, startling Rain onto his back.

"Easy- Boy, My apologies for being late." The man offered a hand down to Rain, helping him onto his feet...
"You look like him." He'd murmur with a tired smile, ironic to say for the brother of Rain's late Father.

"Is- Is there a Car?" Rain murmured, very much wanting to get out of the cold before it got any later.
The man only shook his head, raising a lamp he had set upon the bench before announcing himself, nodding his head towards what seemed to be a small path in the greenery, heading into the growth, up the hill that backed the stop.

"I must apologize for breaking your focus earlier, it was not my intention to startle You.... - I'm glad to see You share His passion for photography." His uncle mentioned as they began the walk up, small cobblestone steps covered with faint veins of moss in the cracks of dirt between the rocks,

Small stone lanterns with empty lights provided shelter for frogs and bugs, attracting fireflies to gather around the little mini homes, small statues of various charms and animals littered the walk up the steps,
Rain tried to ignore the burning in his lungs from the exertion, luckily the air around here felt humid, more so than down below, it actually didn't hurt to exert himself here...

"I Suppose I do, Uncle Ito -" Rain hummed, looking back over the valley, trying was more the word as the tree's made it a bit difficult, and Rain soon found himself preferring to look towards the mountain as the verticality of the trail was dawning on him.

'Not EVERYTHING needs a photo taken of it' The boy thought to himself, preferring to go without taking one from here rather than falling.

"What would you like to do when we arrive? I imagine you're tired from your travels-" Ito wondered, and left Rain pondering for a moment.

"I suppose- I would like to settle into my room, if that's alright, and I can help with whatever you need done around the place." Rain whispered, not exactly expecting much as far as pastimes go at a tourist spot like the Springs.

A light chuckle came from the Man ahead of him.
"Have you heard from your Friends as of late, Young Takehashi?"
The elegant but simple robes the man wore were that of a Master, after all he was the Keeper of the Springs, the ancient waters had been tended by the Takehashi line for generations.

"No, why?" Rain wondered why his friends were of any mention, but just figured the man wanted to check in on him.
Rain had always been a quiet kid, distant, enough for the Adults in his life to worry, always whispering his name when they thought he couldn't hear, He didn't blame them, but he wasn't going to start speaking up any time soon.

The rest of the walk was fairly quiet, giving Rain a burst of energy he hadn't felt in a while, skipping a step now and again, the place was beautiful - the nature was a rich deep green that turned almost blue in the fading light, a sign of rich soil and sacred waters.

As they reached the top of the stairs up, Rain could see the open yard before the wooden gates of the Springs, a blanket of steam lingering above the fenced off Springs, numerous rooftops visible from the different wards of the Springs.

Carvings of Ancient Dragons coiled around the entrance to the Springs, the wooden doors still sturdy after hundreds of years.

People used to call it the Dragons Spring, as from a distance the shape of the mountain almost seemed flowing like the spine of a Dragon, of course that didn't stop the Rumors, people called it Haunted or a place where Aliens would stop and visit because it was the highest spring across the area... The Takehashi's always put it aside as nothing more than rumor, one Rain wasn't keen on remembering as he looked across the vacant lot where vehicles could park from the road up.

"It's closed?" Rain wondered, following Uncle Ito towards the gate, unlocking it with a key.

"Not closed, its the slow season, we haven't had visitors for almost a month now." Ito murmured, an almost sly grin in his eyes.

Slinging his backpack over his shoulder, Rain hesitantly stepped inside, greeted by a blast of warmth kept by the humid air around the place, the wooden fences and walls inside the Springs coated in a faint sheen of moisture and moss threatening to grow.

"The Main house is down this way." Ito gestured down the left, a rock pathway leading to a sliding door, the light inside seemed welcoming.

Rain closed the gate behind him, taking a curious look at the Fountain trickling water, an ornate looking copper dragon crusted with jade oxidation, a perfect photo.

"Hey- Uncle Ito, can I stay up a bi-" Rain stepped into the door, finding arms wrapping around him, softly embracing him.

Too stunned to register what was going on at first, seeing familiar faces, aged by time apart, a cold sensation welling in his chest.
"Rain! We were worried, you never texted you made it!"

"Ariko- Tadami!-" Rain was just, speechless, What was everyone doing here?

"We were texting the group chat we were on our way to come visit, did you not get them?" The girl before him held him at arms length, Rain lifting his phone, his face flushed from the sudden realization that his friends were actually here, tapping through his phone.

"Which group chat?-" Rain would face the phone towards them, showing the most recent messages were from days ago when he first left for the Springs.

"The other one!" Ariko released him, letting Tadami and Hana also get in their greeting.

"That was- my old phone, remember?" Rain felt the heat start to fade from his face, His friends had changed so much, gotten taller, older, he supposed he had too...

"Tadami-" Rain embraced the hug offered from the other man, who had grown much taller than he last remembered.

"Hana-" Rain was about to tear up as he hugged the girl,
"I don't even know what to say, I- I didn't know you'd be here." Rain apologized, wiping the side of his face.

"That's not the only surprise~" Tadami chuckled, leaning up against the nearby wall,

Rain was already finding it difficult to compose himself, anything more and he didn't know if he could take it - That's when Hana and Tadami each posed as if to present something - someone rather.

For Tadami, Hanna and Ariko it had been only two years, Y/N However, Y/N hadn't seen Rain since grade school, It was meant to be a surprise, but at this point it was more of a Miracle, Y/N never thought they'd actually get everyone back together again until now -
