In light of this month's challenge and a text I received recently, I was wondering if and how I can post/play as other people's characters from their profiles. How do I get there, and what are the rules when doing this?
I think the first thing to do is ask for the creator's permission?
If they allow you to use their character then the next thing to do is to read their background. Also, maybe have a clear picture from its creator on how the character you are going to play's behavior? I mean, how is their personality, how is their image, how the writer want you to behave if you are playing their character. What was the purpose, what was their connection.
I have a friend of mine, Sophia, that using my NPC and build it into their own character. But, when she build it, she keeps asking me about how I want that 'character' to be built and both of us discussed on how to build the character's background. As long as you got the original creator's permission and discuss it with them, I think it will be the fun process on having their character to be played by you.

What Jenna said. I've gotten permission to create and use a couple of a friend's characters they had here before they got banned. We still write some on another site, but my use of them here was to augment the stories they were involved in with my characters.
As far as actually posting using someone else's character; the characters are created by an account, and can only be used by that account.

Thank you both so much for your explanations!
I was just wondering about posting as someone's character because I recently got a Happy Birthday message from one of my own characters...Is this an automated message, or how does this work? I got confused because the character is anonymous and I've only shared them once. It was startling for me to receive a full message from a character I created from their profile.

That's an automated message!
Every year on your birthday, RPR's system will choose a random character on your roster to wish you a Happy Birthday, anonymous or otherwise. Nobody can actually take control of your character profiles like that but you.
Wow, thanks for clearing that up!
It's a nice touch from the system, just scared me a bit because the character was just blocked by a rp partner for unknown reason. Guess it was just a coincidence!

I'm glad you got the answers you needed! Just to confirm as a moderator that it's not possible to post as another person's character. I also don't recommend recreating a character profile (even with permission!) to avoid confusion, or at the very least make it very clear that you are not the original player of the character.
We don't allow people to share accounts for any reason, including to roleplay as the same character, because it violates the trust of confidentiality towards the community and makes it exceptionally difficult to hold people accountable for their actions while using the account. In a similar vein, creating multiple profiles of the same character between different users would become a real headache for moderators in case something happens with rules being broken. While we can verify the owner of a character on an as-needed basis, it can be potentially very problematic for the rest of the community to differentiate between the different users this way.
So while roleplaying someone else's character is fine and dandy with that user's permission, I strongly advise against recreating entire profiles without a very very clear notice that you're someone else, and we definitely don't allow account sharing to make it happen.

Thank you for the clarification!
I understand that characters are personal, created by one person's creative mind, and therefore theirs to play. I was not planning to share any characters with anyone, because I think it exceeds the idea of roleplay. But thank you again for the explanation, I'm sure there's people out there who need to hear this from time to time.
Keep up the good work, Mods!
