I have been role playing for quite some time but I guess I am starting to get to a point where I am kind of rusty. I am mostly just looking for any quick tips for keeping a storyline going and making sure I am continuing to be an adequate role play partner! I do have maybe 3-4 role plays that I feel are going well still (partners, if you see this and want to pass along constructive criticism then please do!) but due to a lot of more recent role plays fizzling out nearly as soon as they start… I’m starting to wonder if it’s just time to throw in the towel all together!

Any tips help!

Thanks! :)

I think I’ll throw in a recent experience.

I have started an RP with an almost professional role-player, that one player that is totally complete, I mean it. I don’t divulge any name.
But it’s like :
- in contrary to what is said, use first, second, third person, intelligently used it powers your RP into something breathtaking, your character starts to think, a metaphysical approach
- you can boost an RP with images (can be AI generated), or even music, creating an atmosphere beyond written description
- cliffhanger within a post, creating the desire to read on, so it generates a motivation to write for your partners
- feedback on long posts, but I mean constructive criticism, so your partner can answer having those ideas in mind and he evolves too

More to come if anyone interested 😉

Here are some tips that might actually help you. I have been roleplaying for (this is going to hurt to say it but...) 29 years. What I have found is that stories with no purpose fizzle out faster than ones with a goal.

Now, there are different kinds of goals you and your partners can set for each other. Small - check point style goals to keep the story from going off on some bizarre tangent that it cannot come back from. Another benefit to goals is to give you and your partner a future point to work towards together. Once you reach that small goal, set another small goal which could take your story in a whole other exciting direction.

Stagnation, too much smut (unless that is the purpose of the story), and not knowing where the story is going are usually what turns me off and makes me lose interest. Also, if the goals are too big and too hard to achieve that the story seems overwhelming.

Talk to your writing partner. Create small, obtainable goals, and have fun developing your characters along the way. This has been my secret to success with my long-term roleplays.

I appreciate you taking the time to help me out with some tips. I can totally see how this could make the role play experience better for myself and my partner. Maybe I’ll give it a little more time before completely throwing in the towel and try some of these tips to assist with the longevity of my current and future RPs. Thank you!!!
