I'm not quite sure if someone has done a topic on this or not.
But, a friend and I were chatting just this morning. We were talking about "How to change status" of characters. From "Acquaintance" to "Friend". The only way I know how is to remove and readd the person.
Now, if there is another way. I have yet to find it!
If not, maybe a bit of thought would be given to adding a button that gives you the option to change the person (Like at the watch character and remove connection button) to change the status, and move them up the list.
Just a thought

The reason this hasn't been an option right now is to prevent people from changing the character connection to something you don't agree with. If someone's character I only just started RPing with became acquaintances with my character, but then suddenly changed it to family without me knowing or approving it, it would really annoy me and make things a lot more difficult.
By removing the connection and re-adding this, you get to approve the change and prevent drama and difficult situations entirely. This is not the most convenient option, as it also deletes the note for that character, so Kim added better friends connection management to the development list. If you want this, please vote for it at the top of the right-hand sidebar!
Hope that answers your question.

Actually, I've found that removing a connection and then re-adding it (say, removing an acquaintance and then adding that character as a friend) it requires no confirmation from the other player and accepts automatically. I don't know if it does that for everyone, but it certainly does it for me - both with other players and with my own characters.
It does automatically reconnect to the status you desire to put them back on. I think it only confirms that one time, before you can just auto-reconnect without them having to accept it again.

I'm assuming the only times this happens is when you're connecting the character to the same tie that was previously there. If the other character has yours listed as a friend, and you prompt a friend connection, it automatically approves - logically so because there's no reason why your character wouldn't be able to be listed as friend. I also think character ties between your own characters is automatic because... well, there's not really a reason to require approval from yourself? Although it might be the same as the above. (Might be slightly off on this one, but I do know tying your own chars together involves less steps)
This doesn't happen if the other player's character has yours listed as a friend, and you try to connect yours as an enemy or acquaintance or family. In that case the connection needs to be approved again because it changes and doesn't match on both ends.
If you experience otherwise, it's a bug and I recommend you submit a bug report.
Edit: You're right, if someone has you listed as acquaintance but you remove your end of the connection and reconnect as friend, it works. It didn't used to work like this, pretty sure it's a bug. It only changes the tie on your end though, not on the other player's - they still have you listed as whatever they picked.

I didn't mean with my own characters, it's not something I've ever tried before but I am assuming it would be the same.

Yeah, that's exactly what I meant, haha. It changes your connection but doesn't influence the other players, but it doesn't require any kind of consent from the other player, so if my character connected with one of Gemini's, then I would be free to swap and change that to friend, family or enemy without her accepting or being able to reject the change.

Yeah, from what I know this isn't something Kim wants to happen (and neither do I). It's likely a bug unless I misunderstood how she wanted it to work.
Better/faster/easier managing of character friends is something that has been discussed a lot and is absolutely planned and a priority for development this year.
