Midnight Train. The dead have stopped moving on to whatever is next. Instead, they're getting stuck at the station. What's going on? Someone should look into this... Your character could be someone who recently died; someone who recently lost someone; affiliated with the afterlife in some way.
Themes: Mystery, loss, death & the afterlife, service to a cause

Unsleeping City. Y/C and Anna either connect for the very first time via her online shop, or are already acquaintances. Regardless, Y/C admits to her that they're in a sort of situation that "only magic can solve *despondent laughter*", and Anna admits that maybe she can help you. Your character could be anyone who needs a little bit of a miracle, regardless of how familiar they are with magic themselves.
Themes: Unlikely friendship, the fantastical power of teaming up to solve problems

Magic is rare, but not unheard of. Mundane characters may or may not believe in it. Magical characters may form small and exclusive pockets for study, protection, etc.
Modern
Unrest may be part of the setting, but any scenes that happen to involve combat may be summarized.
Romance isn't outright desired, but can happen if we decide the characters are perfect for each other. The romance won't be important to the overall plot.
