Hello! I wasn't quite sure where to put this. I'm having some trouble working out my character's wingspan, and thought I'd throw it out there. She's 6ft tall, and has partially hollow bones - what would be an appropriate wingspan for her, where flight is possible?
Huge. But you'll need to work more at determining her weight as well. There's a lot of info available that discusses necessary wingspans for flight. At the very least, it's come up numerous times explaining how dragons are almost never depicted with wings large enough to fly.
I was going to work out her weight after determining what her wingspan is
It might be worth noting that larger birds of prey (eg, eagles) have larger wingspans relative to their bodies and soar more often than they flap, like smaller birds with smaller wingspans do. Flapping takes up more energy than soaring. So maybe assuming your character's got the necessary muscles for flight, her wingspan would be affected by what she uses her wings for. Frantic flapping or steady soaring?

Since you’re talking about ocean breezes, let’s take an actual sea bird for our first example. The aspect (height to wingspan) ratio of the wandering albatross, which is the world’s largest seabird, is 2:6. This means that for every 1 inch of body size, the bird has 2.6 inches of wing span. This would put your six foot person with a wing span of sixteen feet.

I can see her soaring more often than not, with flapping only if she is confronted in the air in relation to combat. Thanks for that quote, it was useful!
