Hello everyone, I need some help!
This is slightly personal, but my mother decided to tell me that I'm 'wasting my talents' because all I write is fiction and I need to 'broaden my horizons' (I do write nonfiction, but fantasy is my favorite genre). So, being the little brat that I am, I want to write some nonfiction to show her that my talents aren't wasted and that I can do either as much as I want! I have the bad habit of wanting to prove my parents wrong when it comes to my writing ("you can't do nanowrimo during college" *wins nanowrimo both years of college*).
However, it's been a while since I've written any nonfiction. Probably since before college started, which was two years ago. So, I need your help.
tl;dr: The point: I need help coming up with a good plot idea (or even starting point!) for a nonfiction novel/novella/story of whatever length. So, I am asking for my fellow writers to help pour their creative juices into me to help me get my mind rolling with what I could write about! Sometimes even just a starting point will get me going and I'll have one idea after the next just pouring out of me! But I need help getting the wheel turning, so if you guys have any ideas, that would be awesome!
Thanks!

Maybe something about a kid? One with an old soul. Stuck in a divorce between their step parent and their biological parent, but the biological one is a negative influence our abusive or something? perhaps the kid tries to fight to be with step parent?

Non-fiction is stuff like articles, documentaries, and biographies. It's about real events and real people. It requires research more than creativity.
I believe what you're thinking of is "realistic" or "general" fiction, which sticks to real world rules and places and such, but is about imagined people and/or events.

Yeah, that's what I meant lol. Sorry I wasn't quite clear. Mom seems to think I only write fantasy. I want to show I can write realistic as well.
Thanks Madrat!
My favorite place to find ideas for that kind of thing is in the newspaper. There's a billion and one stories about he-said she-said type stuff, or weird little comments that bystanders make, that could blossom into entire stories that could explain such circumstances or comments in interesting and more believable ways than even the dry reporting does!
That's a good idea, I'll check it out and see what pops up! Thanks, Kim!
People watching is good in a similar way. I've also in the past converted fantasy stories to non-fantasy by keeping the same structure and theme and just expanding on it.
Oooo great advice Thank you!
If you enjoy writing fiction, then you're not wasting your talents.
As for your horizons: how did they determine how broad they are? can they apply the same measures to their own horizons and those of other people consistently? how did they determine how broad your horizons need to be?

Perhaps do a little research on a person whom inspires you, and do a little bit on their history. In which you can learn more about a person that inspires you!
