Stories tell of a thing that lives in the Red Swamp - a behemoth made iron, steel, and rust. They say it is a terrible thing of machine and dark magic, a mechanical demon that wears the patchy, matted fur of animals and the withered face of a man. Some say it uses its victims to periodically replace the face, while others insist that it is the face of the madman who created the thing. When it walks on its many legs, the ground shakes and the shrieks of those it has murdered can be heard with each step. It controls the very swamp itself, somehow never sinking into the muddy depths where so many of its victims' bones lay.

To some, it is a ghost story to make children behave. To others, it is a reminder that man must remember his limitations. And to some over the ages, it has been considered as a great prize to be hunted down.

They call it The Beast.

I'd be playing the Beast, possibly some others if needed. Could be 1x1 or a group thing. Would be great to have "Belle" (I'm figuring more of a mechanic than a bookworm) and "Gaston" roles at least, though this certainly doesn't have to follow any established story. The sort of setting I'm thinking of could probably best be described as "post-apocalyptic dieselpunk Louisiana." Funky culture, funky machines/tech, hot and humid, and a dash of weird magic.

Any takers? :D

Title: Beauty and the Beast - In DIESELPUNK

Or steampunk/gaslight fantasy. I know little enough of the inner workings of it all. |D

I actually stole the idea from student work in the hall back in college. It looked fascinating, even though there was nothing more than some character art. :]

I kinda felt like playing the Beast (but probably more sad than rage-y). Kinda want a swampy area for some reason, too. Anybody up for playing the spunky Beauty (new character, existing character, whatevs)? I'd also be cool with people just re-stealing the idea, too, but I would like a chance to see what you do with it. :3

Note: I'm pretty neutral on romance in this thing. If anything, I'm leaning a bit more toward just a very dear friendship. But I'm flexible. :) Heck, things could even go horribly wrong.
Icias (played by RoyaleX318)

He's not really angry or ragey, more of a giant lazy companion... once a great warrior of a talking society of BEARONs' he now has lost all credibility as a warrior and is just looking for a companion (friendly.) But if you want a beast he is a giant polar bear :P

Not quite what I'm looking for, but thanks. :)

Updated the idea. :3
Bessie Mae Baker (played anonymously)

Would this character interest you? I haven't exactly fleshed her out totally, but I keep seeing this and wanting to play.
Zelphyr Topic Starter

She does seem pretty cool so far. :)
Ooooh, I wouldn't mind playing a Gaston character at all... XD Did you have an idea for any sort of character in that regard? I'm guessing a talking candelabra isn't exactly going to be of much use in the swamps...

Pen! *glomp*

Most of what I've thought of, I've already posted. I'm certainly happy to hear from others though. :)
:D

Actually, since you mentioned a mechanic character...if the beast were female, Chris Sanders would totally be your Belle. XD Gender swap for a new spin on an old tale. XD
Bessie Mae Baker (played anonymously)

I've fleshed out the character's history. I might have made her too close to the original. I hope you don't mind the mention of the war, I thought it might be interesting to give her a little experience away from home. Plus, y'know, listening to far too much jazz music while making her.
Zelphyr Topic Starter

Psh, I think Bessie's great. :D And I had no problem with the war at all.

So will we be doing a thing with the three of us (and possibly going a little slow starting out, at least)? If so, Pen, do you have any more solid an idea for your character? Also, would you folks prefer a public topic, a topic in a group (I wouldn't mind an excuse to get activity in VRU), or a shared PM?

Or would separate things, one using that gender swap, be better at the moment?

And would either of you like to get any other details established before we dive in?
Bessie Mae Baker (played anonymously)

I'm happy to do any place, and I'm happy to play with all three of us, or just the two of us.

I am going on vacation from the 23rd until the 30th and I will have very limited internet (hurrah for radio internet!), but I will try and pop a post every day if possible/people are waiting.

Back down to the two of us, Bessie, unless someone else would like to join!
I thought this sounded epic the first time I read over it. Are you in need of someone to portray a specific character? Gaston or something?
Zelphyr Topic Starter

A Gaston-type would be spiffy, but don't consider that a restriction/requirement. ^^
Jack (played by Libertine)

I'm kind of considering using this gal. She's just rude enough to play as a villain, and selfish enough to want to hunt down the Beast (if a reward's included).
Zelphyr Topic Starter

Not sure about a set reward, sincea lotta folks don't even think it exists, but there could be, even if it's intended more as a gimmick challenge than a real reward. If nothing else, there would be fame! (Which does tend to lead to fortunes.)
Bessie Mae Baker (played anonymously)

What if, perhaps, someone offers a reward as a joke. They are so convinced that the Beast isn't real, they throw out a reward for proof?
Either one works for me! Money and/or fame are both great motives for Jack. I think it would be good for Bess and her to at least have a little familiarity with one another. I could make her a mechanic of sorts, maybe they worked/work together? It would also give her a drive to want to scrap the Beast for parts- it sounds like a really unique construction, so she could be interested in destroying and dissecting it.
She's a war deserter in another RP I have her in, but I'm not sure if that would apply well here.
Zelphyr Topic Starter

Well, Bessie already established that there was, indeed, a war. We can also play around with post-apocalyptic themes, which trends to boost the harshness of circumstances and change societal norms. ^^
