Some heroes are thrust into greatness, using their power and skills to save lives daily even if that meant losing their own lives in the process. Selfless heroes like that are Firefighters, Soldiers and hunters...

Hunters are people that fight the creature of the dark, the things that you see in your nightmares. Creatures that normal human beings don't believe exist. So when a child asks you to check the closet, make sure you check often because 99% of the chance... There's something there...

Slade was born as such hunter. He was born great, another silent hero against the darkness of the world. Him and his companion Nina. Both were close as the grew up together, but it was fate that tore them apart.

Slade had always wanted a normal life, something to leave behind in the world. A family and a legacy. Since they both parted ways, he lived a pretty normal life. He has a source of income as a bartender, not the best job but he's able to support himself and live normally in an apartment.

The night begins when Slade returns to his apartment. It was a lot quieter than he'd remember since moving in. The rain pattered against his room window as he tossed his keys into a bowl. he opened the fridge and grabbed a beer then took some college work out from his backpack that rested in the corner of his living room. sitting at the dinner table he started to study "great... Physics..." He said to in a sigh. Taking a sip of his beer he clicked the pen and started to doodle.

Nina Berms was a tough girl to people who didn't know her. The hunter life had changed her. Her parents both died at the hands of supernatural evil, both also hunters, so she was automatically entered in the miserable life. Still, everything seemed intenser after they died. When she and Slade parted ways, she just lost her parents and she was greatful to not have to deal with her loss while Slade saw her so vulnerable. Even though she missed him very much, her life style took so much out of her that she didn't have time to think about him.

Since the last time she and Slade had seen each other, lots had changed. Not only her personallity but her looks to. She was all grown up, cut her hair and had a couple of tattoos now. She went from the once so sweet and bubbly person to a very bitter and merciless girl with a taste for blood. Ofcourse, all of that was a mask for what was really wrong.

"Nice to see that you are going after your dreams. How hopefull of you." She said with a soft voice. Nina had been standing in the corner when he came in. She was leaning, one foot up and folded against the wall. She was wearing a black leather jacket and ripped jeans with chuncky boots under them. Her arms were folded infront of her, not showing that she was wearing cut of gloves.

Slade was quick to react, his sense may not be as strong as they were but his reaction time is lightning quick. He had a knife in his hands as he turned to face the mysterious voice "Who are you?" he asked keeping a defensive stance. his eyes locked on her "how did you get in?" there was only one way in so he would've noticed... how long had she been waiting for him?

Him being faced by that stranger was... strange, her voice was... familiar. he moved his cobalt blue hair to the side so that it wouldn't obscure his vision "You sound... Where do i know you from?"

She pushed herself from the wall and walked towards Slade so he could see her. "Well, I just picked the lock. It wasn't that hard." She walked around him as she spoke. "Nice place you have here." Her tone was very sarcastic and her face sharp.

"You know me from a long time ago. We used to play in the sand box together, well before we were trained to kill what was hiding in our closets." The knife in her hand was twirling around her fingers as she played with it. Her eyes focused on Slade, observed his every move. "And once in a while we'd make out, just to keep things excited and dramatic."

Slade tilted his head a little "Played in the sand... No way" he parroted under his breath "Nina?" he asked loosening up. He gently placed the knife on the table and ran his hand threw his hair, moving it to the side as he looked at her in disbelief.

Approaching her, he looked her up and down, surprised more than anything "Wow you look... different" He said with a chuckle "It's better than what we used to live in, those cheap motel rooms and abandoned houses. This apartment is a step up by far but... wow"he said with a big smile. He approached her and hugged her it may have surprised her but it was long over due and he need to hug her again.

The hug did come as a suprise and as Slade might've noticed she didn't really hug him back. "Hmm yeah. If you are into that stuff. I like the motels." She shrugged and sat down in one of the chairs, her feet resting on the chair opposite from her. "You haven't changed a bit though. Still dreaming big, I see."

"Anyway, I'm not here for a walk down memory lane. I'm here because I need your fathers journal." The knife got put away and she took a sip from the beer on the table. "I looked everywhere for it, but I couldn't find it." Nina needed the journal to find info on her parents. Where they stayed and how they got in contact with other hunters. She knew that Slade's father had worked together with her parents so she needed to see if he knew what happend the night they died. She stood up and scratched her head. "So, can you give it to me? I have places to go."

Slade's happy that she's here but, she's different. She used to hug him first if anything "Nah, the motes were terrible" he said grabbing another beer for her "That hunter life wasn't for me, i needed more from life" he said sitting opposite her and handed her the bottle.

She's totally different, she doesn't smile as much as she did which scares him... for her sake "Your parents are dead?" he looked down at his bottle. Her parents were nice unlike his father who was... obsessed with his job... Slade never really knew why. "Good luck trying to find the damn thing, i haven't spoken to him in a while and, if you can't track it or him down then i'm worried he's in trouble"

Slade got up and started pacing, he was thinking about what he should do "i'm coming too" he looked at her with serious eyes "i can't do all of this knowing he'd be in trouble, I'm coming" he grabbed his coat heading for the door, he stood by the doorframe waiting for her.

"Yes, my parents died a couple of days before I left. Actually they are the reason." A normal person would've been sad or atleast seemed moved by such a tragic event but Nina was lifeless about the whole thing. She could've talked about going grocery shopping and it would've been the same amount of emotions.

"Fine, I'll try and look for him again." She was about to go when he said he was coming. Suprised she turned to him and arched her eyebrows in disbelieve. "Oh, no honey. You aren't coming." She shuckled a bit and continued. "First of all, I work alone. Second, you left all of this behind. Remember?" This time, when she smiled, it wasn't a friendly smile. It was more a angry and dissapointed smile. Like she blamed him for everything. "You wouldn't want to leave your precious dream behind, now would you. You know as well as I do, once you are back in, its very hard to get out. So please, do yourself a favor and stay in your Barbie and Ken life. Go to college and meet a pretty-bagage-free girl. Make babies with her and go your whole life without looking back. Pretend you never knew me or anyone else from your previous life." Her voice changed, by the end of the speech you could hear how hurt and how jealous she was. She could've cried, if she wasn't so good at hiding her feelings.

Slade looked at her with a puzzled expression, more hurt by the fact that she didn't want her old partner back. They were unstoppable together and she knew it. "no, i'm not staying when i know my dad's out there in trouble, for all i know he's trapped by a shape shifter or a changeling... i don't know what to do but i know that i'm going back..."

He didn't say anything, but his eyes were focused on hers, he could almost see through her shell but only can see the anger she holds "i never forgot, the things we did, the laughs we had and thrill we got. I have scars that i smile about because i remember every case we took" He grabbed his keys "You're not doing this alone. My dad's obsessed but he's no fool. If he's in trouble then he'll leave messages"

Slade led her out and down the stairs

"Fine, come along. Whatever, its not like I care. You don't have to get all sappy about it." Quickly she turned around and ran down stairs. Without saying a word she got on her bike, put on her helmet and started driving to the only place she knew where to start. The 'Old shack' pub, a place where her parents used to come and relax. Also the place where Slade and Nina danced for the first time and where she finally realised that she felt more then friendship for him.

While driving, she dropped her hard act and cried. It took a lot out of her to be so cold. Yes, it was easier then actually showing how she felt. Still, it took her everything she had to not jump into Slades arms and tell him everything. She wanted so bad to just hug him and tell him what happend, how bad she felt and how lonely she had been. But she couldn't do that to him. He was finally happy, chasing his dreams. If she did that, she knew he'd do the right thing and take care of her. Because that was the kind of person he was, selfless and caring. She. She was selfish and egocentric. She couldn't tell him, not ever.

She drove pretty fast because the speed helped her cope. This also made for her being there faster then him, so she took her helmet of and fixed her eyes. When she saw his car, she took a deep breath and prepared for a long night.

The night was cold, the faint moonlight reflected off the wet surface as Slade drove after her. The sound of his mustang GT helped ease his troubled mind. He remembered the first time he danced with Nina, he was choking. They were 15 and he barely knew how to do anything other than play the guitar, study and hunt. The ol' shack was a haven for him, his dad was normal there. Slade felt like his dad was actually... a dad... He approached Nina one time when they were there, he asked her to dance even though he was a terrible dance. She led him through the steps, showed him how good it felt to dance. She told him to treat each step like plucking a guitar string. Most of what Slade could remember was the butterflies he felt when he tried to ask her if she'd want to be his girlfriend...That never happened..

Slade smiled and frowned to himself through all the happy and sad memories. he knew she was hurting inside but it's not his place to ask... not yet anyway...

She sped off down the street faster than he felt comfortable driving. eventually catching up to her as she stood outside the Shack. Slade smiled to himself, rolling down the windows as he looked up at the place. The bitter smell of alcohol in the air was welcoming.

Stepping out of the car Slade walked up to Nina "You okay Nina?" he asked her with a sincere look. Ashley, another girl they met at the bar whenever they used to go used to be the owner's daughter, she was just a friend they'd see when they'd dropped by. He hoped she was in, Nina was open with her, mostly because she was another girl Nina could talk to.

"I'm fine, why?" Nina got cold again so easily it almost frightened her. But like usual she ignored the feeling and stepped in the place she used to call home. It had been about 8 years since she last was here and it felt weird. A part of her felt great because of all the memories but then those memories led her to her parents and she couldn't take the pain so she did the only thing she could. Close herself of from any emotion.

When they walked in a couple of regulars greeted them even though they didn't know who they were. But the people behind the bar looked at them with open mouths. Ashley instantly dropped the shot glass she was drying and walked towards the two strangers. First she hugged Slade and then Nina, but Nina didn't hug back or smile. "My goodness. What kind of magic is this? Are you guys really here? Nina, you have changed so much. But you still are pretty as a button. And Slade! Still as handsome as ever." Ashleys familiar voice gave Nina some peace but she couldn't let it make her calm. Not yet.

Ashleys mom quickly called Reggie, Ashleys father and came to greet them too. Nina was getting a bit annoyed by the whole reunion. Because when her mom was her, the look in her eyes changed to compassion and she really didn't need that right now. "Can we please stop the whole family reunion? I'm not here for a shat and a cup of coffee with cookies." Ashley's mouth fell open as she pressed her hand against her chest. "My my, who die-" She quickly recovered as she realised what she was saying. "I mean, please sit down. it's been to long." She nodded and sat down.

Slade smiled as they all gathered around them "Wow, it feels like a lifetime ago now. Oh it feels good seeing the place, and all you guys" he shook Mister Glockner's hand, Ashley's father.
"Son, it has been a lifetime ago, both of you are so grown up!" he said wrapping his arm around Slade's shoulder
"Thank you mister Glockner" Slade said sitting at the table "Excuse Nina, She's had an eventful night" he said to all of them. He looked over at Ashley and smiled "The only thing magical is that smile Ash" complimenting her made her family smile, they always tried to get them 2 together... for some odd reason.

"We're actually here on family business, i'm sorry it's short notice 'n' all but, my dad's missing and i have no idea where he is" Slade's face turned from happy to worried "Have you all seen him? has he passed through or left something?"

Seeing the whole family hang around Slade made her sad and it made her want to be happy but she just couldn't. "I'm sorry to be so rude. I'll just go smoke a cigaret." She said with a soft voice, the guilt she felt dripped from the tone. She stood up and walked outside. Before going through the door. "Just come and get me if you have found something." She said and then proceeded through the door. She had closed the door slow enough to see everyone make eye contact and see them have compassion with her.

She lit her cigaret and took a long pull. In the cold, dark night, she stood, thinking about everything and how much she hated it. Her Phone went off and she took it out to see who texted her. It was Slade's father. Please don't tell him but I'm following a case. Its about Raven...Take care of him. Bye. Goddammit. She hated having secrets from him especially about his father.

She realised that she had to leave, if she wanted to keep it a secret. She proceeded towards her motorcycle and put on her helmet so she could try to make a break for it.

"Going somewhere?" Slade stepped out of the cabin. He felt uneasy when she left him with the Glockners "You need to take your bike to get some air?"

"Yes, I have to go." She said as she tucked her hands in her gloves. "I-euhm. Pressing business. Why?"

"What part of 'm coming with you do you not understand?" he asked crossing his arms, it was cold out "Pressing business can wait, we're partners damnit!"

"No, this can't Slade. I have to go alone." She sighed and rolled her eyes. "Seriously, I can handle it. You should go home and study."

""Stop it with that tone. Ever since you came to me you've been cold, where has my childhood friend gone? Where's the real Nina?!" he asked in all seriousness "You're stuck with me, whether you like it or not"
