New Heroes in the Verse
Chapter 1: Upheaval
Victor had been on Newhall for only a day and already he felt more relaxed and revitalized for the first time in his life then ever before. The golden beaches as far as the eye could see, the blue oceans enveloping the entire planet, the gentle winds catching the mist of water droplets gently landing on his skin. For the first time he was truly happy, finally a place in the verse he could truly call a home, that is if he could find a job. Victor had been a Law Enforce on the Rim for a while jumping from place to place trying to find a home but with the increase of revear attacks Victor thought it best to just head for more fertile lands. Unfortunately with all the colonization bonuses for Newhall everyone was here looking for employment which made it harder for him. Dusting off his black trench coat and his tan leather shoes Victor stepped back up on the walking platform and turned back towards the space dock.
Looking inland at the small island of Kauai as the locals called it Victor watched the dozens of ships landing and taking off like some sort of coordinated ballet starring the cargo ships. The town itself was prefab construction so every building looked identical to the steel buildings surrounding it, except for the rare exception for something larger like the port authority or town hall. Walking back into town the fresh air was replaced with a all to familiar odor of sweat, machinery, and engine exhaust. The streets were packed with newcomers scurrying about trying to find jobs and a place to stay. The main employment on Newhall was in water purification, construction, or service industry. The southern hemisphere of the planet was already riddled with vacation homes and luxury hotels. Victor started pushing through the crowd headed back towards the port authority right outside the landing strips in hope of finding a open position today.
Stepping into the port authority was like trying to fit that one last piece of pie in your mouth and stomaching it, but you know if you do you'll explode. The room was packed to the brim everyone pushing and shoving trying to get to where ever they think I needed to be and in a hurry. Victor pushed his way up against the wall, it was lined with chairs seated was a mix of patrons as well as a couple of hand cuffed gentlemen. Victor thought to himself for a moment trying to figure out what there crime was, figuring it was likely some form of smuggling he brushed the thought away as he came up to the employee only door. Victor didn't have a key so he instead buzzed the bell to get someone to the door, a moment passed and nothing... frustration was building as Victor was getting pressed up against the door as more people flooded into the small waiting area. More vigorously
Victor smashed the button until the door swung open, “What!” said a short round man.
Victor looked down at him, his bald spot was shinning in the artificial light, “I need to speak to the OIC.” Victor said demanding.
“What for?” The man said with a obvious smug tone.
Victor simply pulled back his trench coat revealing a sheriff's badge, while he wasn't employed by the local force yet it still got him a bit of respect.
“Alright come in,” The little fat man said begrudgingly. “Take a seat there, I'll get you when were ready for you.”
The man waddled away around the corner leaving Victor in this small waiting room. Victor preferred to stand, but he did take interest in the news feed that was playing. The Alliance while they wouldn't admit it were in direr straights after the conflict with the reavers in the Blue Sun system. The official story was that the Alliance went there to rid the verse of the reavers but instead returned defeated and battered. Ever since then the reavers have been more aggressive and showing up even in the border systems. Victor focused on the broadcast as it restarted, doing his best to mute out the hustle and bustle of the crowd outside.
The image of a young blonde woman appeared on the screen “Official word from Alliance Command today of their plans to pull the remaining forces from all Rim systems as well as a 90% withdraw of forces in the Border systems as well.” The screen changed to videos of Allaince troops bordering ships and lifting off. “While many speculate what this means for the populations of this system left vertually undefended the brass of the Alliance had this to say on the subject.” A image of a older grey haired man in Allaince uniform clearly someone high ranking but Victor didn't know the ranking system, “This is only a temporary withdrawl the Allaince is simply pulling it's forces back for stratigic reason, once our troops are reassigned and reequiped will be back on in full force.” The man said at the camera and pomptly walked away.
The screen flipped back the the young woman who began talking about other events in the verse. Victor lost interest and became more concerned as to where the little fat man had gone and if he were to ever get his meeting.

Kastien, or Tien as she liked to be called had arrived in Newhall with her younger sister a few days ago. They, like many others were drawn to the planet by the colonization bonuses and the promise that there was lots of work to be found here. When she had first arrived Tien had hoped that Ember and herself could find work together on the same ship, but Tien quickly realized that the chances of that happening were slim. They had been here two days and hadn't found anything yet. It was the beginning of day three and their funds were starting to run low, at least one of them had to find something today.
Tien glanced at her fluffy headed sister while they ploughed through a crowd of unemployed but hopeful people, "Let's try to stay together today Emmy. Yesterday was a disaster." Tien was almost six feet tall, she stood taller than most women and some men, which made it easy to scan over the crowd to see if there was anything promising. Her green eyes were drawn to a screen where the alliance news was playing, although she couldn't hear the words she could read the scrolling text on the screen; the alliance was withdrawing troops. "Fan-freaking-tastic." She grumbled and prodded Ember pointing at the screen, "We gotta find something today. Things are only gonna get worse from here." She began to shoulder and elbow her way through the crowd, throwing a glance back every few moments to make sure Ember was still with her.

"What does this mean?" Her voice was soft, almost scared because of the amount of people around them. Emmy didn't do large groups of people, she usually stuck with engines or her sister. The timid woman adjusted her bag over her shoulders and looked around, fearing they would be stuck on this forsaken planet when the reavers attacked.
Tyler's day was proceeding along the lines of 'very badly'. He'd been forced to orbit overnight to wait for the berth that he'd prearranged beforehand, due to the glut of activity into the port. Finally, he'd managed to land and get the cargo offloaded, only to have his crew then turn around and all quit. The aftermath of Miranda had really screwed the ex-Alliance grunt over.
There was a small measure of relief as he stood there, arguing loudly with his now-former crew. Given Tyler's size, and the size people he was yelling at, and the fact that they were yelling quite loudly, they had plenty of breathing room, nobody wanting to get too close in case fists started flying. Finally, Ty threw his hands up in disgust and yelled. "Fine! Take your gorram stuff and ruttin' go! You Gǒu tuófēng húndàn miàn mà érzi! Go se!
Fuming and running his fingers through hair, Tyler looked out across the packed press of people, his expression running from one of anger into one of cluelessness, the face of a man who had no idea what he was going to do next.

Victor had been standing around in the waiting room for what had seem like a eternity and still nothing, his patients and long since run out. With a loud growl and a slight hunger pain Victor was reminded that he hadn't eaten all day and it was well past diner. Opening the door out Victor confronted the overwhelming crowd once again forcing his way through the endless wave of people. Looking around it didn't take much scouting to find something to eat, the main roadway was littered with food shops setup along each side trying to sell their goods. Victor decided going with the flow of traffic would be easier and floated down to the first stand. It was a simple shed with a bright neon light that read Uncle Chins Fine Dinning.
Standing in front of him on the other side of the counter was a slightly older, tale, skinny, Asian man. “Uncle Chin?” Victor asking jokingly.
The old man let out a great big laugh that echoed over the crowd, “Why yes sunny, what can Uncle Chin get you this afternoon.”
Victor scanned over the menu, their weren't a terrible many options but that all seem to be made of this mystery ingredient listed as Wow Meat. Victor cringed for a moment thinking of what possible combinations of animal parts could be mixed in it, but quickly focused back on the menu.
“I'll take a Wow in a bun.” Victor ordered as his stomach gave him another reminder of its needs.
“O good choice, very good choice.” The little Chin said, his accent emphasizing on the word good. Chin grabbed a pair of tongs, cracking open the fryer he plunged the tongs deep into the vat of grease and whatever else was floating on the top. A second later he pulled the tongs out with a hot dog shaped piece of meat that had been fried probably the whole day, tossing it on a bun and in a wrapper it handed it to Victor.
“Thanks, keep the change.” Victor said as he placed a few credits on the counter.
Smelling the brownies black meat Victor was surprised to find that it smelt quite nice. Taking a bite Victor started chewing on the piece of food, as he analyzed it her couldn't help but like it. Taking another bite Victor started walking back towards the port authority to check if he could get in for his meeting.
Before Victor even got a quarter of the way back to the port authority he heard a oddly familiar sound. He couldn't put his finger on it but it was a sounds he had heard before, and then it hit him. Victor's spine began to tingle at the thought that was passing thought his mind, turning up towards the sound Victor scanned the skies looking for the source. It was dark and a bit cloudy so at first Victor couldn't see it, then suddenly through the clouds a billowing black cloud of smoke came tumbling down towards the island. A second later the front of the ship peaked through, to far up to see any detail but the red stains across the front was unmistakable.
Off in the distance a scream echoed out, “REAVERS!!!!”
Suddenly the organized and calm flow of people through the street was replaced with panic and hysterical movements. Victor dropped what was left of his food and tried to push through the now panic crowd but found himself being crushed against the wave of people. Man, woman, and even children running for their lives trying to get to the docking platforms, pushing, screaming, and shoving there was through. Victor could see people falling and then being trampled by the crowd as they ran them down in the rush for cover. The screams and cries of people echoed so loudly through the street that Victor couldn't even concentrate let alone get the crowds attention to calm them. Suddenly a small craft flew low through the crowd, a rope hanging from behind. Victor turned around to see a anchor being dragged through the crowd bouncing off the ground cutting people in half, decapitating others as it continued to bounce along blood and body parts flung in every direction.
The crowd thinned out and dispersed in random directions, this allowed Victor to finally get free. The only thing on his mind was to help as many people as he could get to transports and get to safety. Running as fast as he could Victor started his way to the landing pads when another small craft passed over this time deploying reavers as it hovered over head. Victor pulled his service pistol from its holster under his coat, a Smith and Wesson 45 replica gun he promptly aimed it towards the reavers now standing in his path. Squeezing off a round his bullet meet its mark ripping a sizable hole in the reavers chest. Turning to the next one he watched in horror as the reaver had grabbed a man and was now strangling him with his own intestines, first firing a round into the man to end his suffering and then another into the reavers head causing it to explode in a red mist. His path way was clear and he could see the transports in the distances, moving carefully towards the landing pads always keeping a eye out for more reavers Victor made it to the edge of the landing pads. Victor watched as people swarmed around the transports trying anything they could to try and get on board. One transport filled to the brim was still surrounded by people when the pilot igniting the engines vaporizing the people standing below them and sending many flying across the open. There was nothing Victor could do for the dead or dieing, he knew he had to focus on the still living... they were the only ones with any chance of surviving. Running towards another of the transports Victor was hoping to stop the same thing from happening again. As he ran he watched the first transport start to rise into the sky, but suddenly the reaver ship reappeared from across the space port. Launching grapples the reaver ship snagged its prey and as it flew by the lines tightened, the transport couldn't compensate and flipping outside down and plunging back down towards the ground. The transport smashed into two others still down on the landing pads, Victor stopped in his path as he watched burning bodies by the dozen emerge from the crash site. Without warning the fuels in one of the ships exploded, creating a giant fire ball and sending chunks of debris of all shapes and sizes in every direction. Victor didn't see the peace with his name on it as piece of yellow plastic smashed him in the head instantly knocking him unconscious.

Tien could hear the fear which edged around Ember's voice, and no matter how hard she tired Tien couldn't come up with something to ease her younger sisters fear. Finally she sighed and gave her head a shake, "Let's just concentrate on finding a job Mei Mie, we can worry about that other crap later." she forced a smile to her lips before scanning the crowd once again, "Come On, lets check over here." she tilted her head towards the landing pads, "Maybe we will have better luck today." The woman had barely changed directions when the panic began.
As chaos erupted, Tien reached out and grabbed her sisters arm while colourful language exploded from her, "Yeh Su, Wo Cao. Come On we have get on a ship." Tien was running even before she had finished speaking, and she hadn't a clue where to go. She ran with the flow of the crowd dragging her sister with her, scared if she let go they'd get separated and something worse would happen. Just as that worry crossed her mind someone surged through their connected arms and broke the link, "Tah ma duh!" she cursed again as more people surged between Ember and herself, soon Tien lost sight of her. Rather than being trampled trying to fight against the crowd, Tien continued on with the crowd towards the landing pads as the first transport lifted into the sky.
A scent more putrid than the smell of fear which filled the air reached Tien's nose, burnt flesh. She nearly gagged as she realized people had been burned in the take off. More screams erupted in the crowd as the reaver ship trapped the transport, sending it towards two other ships. With three ships now destroyed the chaos began to border on insanity.

Ember was about to nod when her sister said they should just focus on finding a job, then the panic cried out from the town folks and the younger woman began to panic herself. She ran with her sister as far as she could until their connection was broke and she froze; her blue green eyes scanning for somewhere to hide from the death and carnage around her. Before Em knew what was happening, her feet started for the largest building she could find, her thought process being that it had to have a basement. When she found that the door was already blocked, she growled to herself and cursed "wang ba dan!"
The blonde was lost and afraid, she had nowhere to hide and was alone. She scanned the area once more, trying to find anything that would give her cover from the attack. Her eyes fell on a small shack not too far from the building she was in front of and she took off, dodging between the people where she could. As she got closer to the small building, something caught her foot and she feared it was a Reaver; she fell face first into the dust and winced. Ember looked behind her slowly, expecting the worse only to see that it was an unconscious man. At first, she was just going to leave him there, but she knew better than to leave a defenseless people alone. Ember did the only thing she could, she tightened her ruck sack straps, pulled the man up as high as she could muster and started dragging him toward the shack. She yelled at people to get out of her way, even threatened to shot a few of them even though she had nothing on her to do so.
Once she had gotten them both to the shack, she kicked the door in and threw the man inside, trying her best not to injure him further. Ember found something to block the door with and dived in herself. She didn't know the man she'd rescued, but she held his head in her lap for her own comfort and sang to him a song that her mother had sung to her when the girls were little.

Tyler's melancholy reverie deafened him to many of the same clues that other combat vets had tuned into. In truth, the captain of the Viator didn't pick up on anything being wrong until just before the cry went out.
Reavers. The word sent an spike of ice into his heart, paralyzing Captain Coolidge's mind. Thankfully, the part that still belonged to Lieutenant Coolidge was already moving, dropping Ty's weight to start him moving and build momentum, shifting direction to the lockers that he kept next to the hatch.
Frantically palming the keys to two of the lockers, Coolie yanked both open, quickly pulling out a thigh holster with an unnecessarily large pistol inside. The pistol was actually a shotgun, patterned after the Serbu Super-Shortys of antiquity. Hooking the holster onto his belt and buckling it around his thigh, Ty's hand came down in a practiced motion to flick off the safety. Reaching into the second locker, Tyler paused and took a slow breath. An incongruous action, it helped the muscled male center himself and gave him a very important second to figure out if he had a headache. Realizing that he had a slight twinge behind his left eyeball, Coolidge's hands moved over to another set of gear: A pre-prepared vest with shells and a holstered pistol, and a magazine-fed shotgun. Tossing the vest around his shoulders but not bothering to fasten it, Ty slammed a mag home in the shotgun and chambered a shell, already moving out the hatch and bellowing at such a thoroughly impressive volume as to hint that he may have, at one time, been a drill instructor.
"Here! Here! Safety!" Wading out into the crowd, Tyler started trying to shove people towards his ship, including an absurdly tall blonde woman, whom he gave a bit of direction, hoping that she'd do what he said. "Get the engines spooled up! /Kick in the e-power!/"
Turning back into the crowd, Ty continued to yell and shove people towards his ship, though most, if not all, ignored him. Spying two reavers tearing at what used to be a woman, Ty drew the pistol off the vest and drew a bead on one, nailing it with a double-tap. Turning his aim towards the other, the muzzle of the pistol shrank in his perception, becoming impossibly small, while the reaver, now up and charging, had become gigantic.
"Ta ma de! Goupi!" Even as he screamed his frustrations, Ty holstered the pistol and brought the muzzle of the shotgun up, blasting a gaping ruin into the once-human from barely a foot away. Fighting his way back into the thinning crowd, Tyler took a moment to power up his comm, hoping that someone would be smart enough to use it if they were on his ship, and praying that nobody stole his ship while he was fighting for their lives.

Victor started coming around, focusing himself his eyes still shut he could still hear the screams echoing off in the distance but something soft and sweet was overpowering the noise. Bringing his hand to his head and slowly opening his eyes he could see a young blonde woman holding him in her lap and singing a unfamiliar song. Touching his head he could feel blood running down the side of it, Victor was fortunate to have received a decent amount of medical training on the outer worlds due to the lack of real doctors and knew that he most certainly had a concussion.
Pulling away from the woman's grasp and righting himself Victor looked about for a moment, “Where are we.” Victor was still disoriented and confused from the injury.
Reaching for his pistol he couldn't find it, likely kicked around somewhere in the street. This didn't phase him, reaching down to his ankle Victor pulled a smaller pistol from a hidden holster. While only a .380 walther PPK replicate not as large a caliber as his 45 it was still a gun and could still do damage.

The young blonde looked at the man and blinked softly, "Well, I'm pretty sure we're still on Newhall unless this shack as magical transporting properties." Emmy was only a smart ass when she was scared, and right now she was a giant smart ass. She watched as he patted himself down looking for his firearm and looked at the door and small windows of the building they were in. "I don't think they'll find us here, most of the people were running away from the buildings, I dragged toward some..." She trailed off, hoping her sister was alright.
“Thanks,” Victor said in his most apologetic tone although still a bit harsh.
Closely examining the little shack Victor knew it was feeble and on the verge of collapse, this was certainly no place to hide for long. Even if they had been in a secure place, hiding from reavers wouldn't do them much good. Victor knew they would eventually pick the place to the bone unless they found something more appetizing and right now this island was like a finely cooked steak with grade A sides.
Standing up Victor peaked out the window, “The way looks clear and I can still see a Firefly sitting on the tarmac if we wanna survive we gotta get to it.” Victor said as he slowly open the door keeping a eye out for any reavers. “Come on,” Victor motioned for the clearly frightened young woman to follow him.

Ember looked at the man, thinking he was crazy for risking his neck after she nearly killed herself to save him. "Are you our of your gorram mind?! I'm not going out there!" Fear tainted her voice. Though she was scared beyond her wildest dreams, Ember knew that if se wanted to see her sister again, she'd followed the mad man.
Pushing herself up, she looked around the shack, wishing she didn't have to leave its safety, and followed him. "You get me killed, my sister will seek the highest revenge she can think of." She threatened him, hoping that it wouldn't be an empty one.

Victor started moving heading for the last of the prefab buildings outside the landing pads. Hitting the corner of the building with his inertia he pulled up to the edge of the building, first peaking left, right, and finally behind him to make sure the young woman was still with him. Victor watched as a reaver hover craft flying to low between the streets smashed into the little shack they were taking refugee in, within seconds it was engulfed in flames.
“Told you,” Victor said with a smirk on his face. “Ok its only a short run to the ship were going to do this all at once, I need you to run your little heart out. On my count of three, one, two, three!” Victor said with a scene of urgency in his voice.
As they ran Victor intentionally let the young woman slip by him just a bit so he could keep his eye on her. Running past the burning debris and wreckage Victor could see a trapped reaver under a piece of metal lunging out in their path. Pulling up his pistol he carefully aimed at the reaver while still in a full on run, taking a slightly rushed shoot he missed wide, the burning but still dangerous corpse was growing larger in his sights with only meters separating them Victor shot again hitting his mark. As the two passed the body it laid lifeless a small relief to Victor. Finally the two were right on top of the ship, it was clear many people were already taking shelter within it and someone standing guard at the open cargo door.
“Hurry in,” Victor said as he pushed the young woman up on the ramp.
“There's no one else left, we've gotta go now if we wanna make it outta here alive,” Victor yelled at the man standing guard as he himself ran up the ramp.

Hearing someone calling out that there was safety amongst this chaos Tien's eyes and feet were instantly drawn to the source; a heavily armed man with a ship. When he gave her instructions she almost insisted on a weapon so she could fight, and find her sister too. However Tien realized that once everyone was on board they would need a hasty take off, so instead she darted inside the ship. The tall woman didn't require any directions on where to go, when she was younger one of her favorite things was studying the layout of various ships, she knew some like the back of her own han; thankfully one of those was a Firefly.
In a few short moments she reached the bridge, had ship fired up and ready to go. Then she started up the comm, "Err..." She hesitated for a second not sure how to address the man, so she went with the safest bet. "All is ready Captain. If you see a fluffy headed girl down there anywhere, can you make sure she gets aboard." She knew the man likely had his hands full down there, but if she hadn't asked she would have been headed back down to the chaos to find Ember herself. Now she waited, once the man she assumed was the captian gave her the word Tien would try and get them out of here.

Tyler's shots came more freely as the crowd thinned even further, with less of a chance of hitting bystanders, the former Alliance grunt was able to engage quicker and more effectively. At the crackling of his comm, Ty pumped out two more rounds, then thumbed the transmit button as he changed magazines.
"Fluffy hair, check. Color and name?" Scanning the courtyard again, the question became moot as a man and a fluffy-headed girl sprinted up the ramp. Thumbing the button on his comm again, he started calling to the other woman on his ship. "Short, fluffy, and blonde is on board! /Get this boat in the air!/"
Running over to the middle of the cargo hold, Coolie called over to the other man as he himself started hauling upward on a deck plate. "Help me with this gorram thing!" Once the deck plate was lifted and set aside, it revealed a small but effective selection of heavier arms, including one handheld anti-ship weapon, all likely leftovers from the war picked up by an opportunist and obtained by the Captain for a hefty price.
Running back over to close the hatch, Ty buckled up his vest and snatched up the AS gun, not pausing, even as he bellowed again, his 'battlefield' voice booming all the way through the ship as he ran towards the upper access hatch. "Lock everything down and go for full burn as soon as you've got it!"
Despite their relative safety at the moment, Tyler had seen the other ships that the Reavers had taken down, and his instincts and blood were both screaming to loud to leave it to chance. Checking the chambers of the AS gun, Coolidge cursed, then stood by the ladder to the hatch, trying to will away his headache. They only had four shots if another ship started chasing them.

Ember ran passed the man she'd saved and up into the ship. She thought she heard the darker man something about and a short fluffy headed girl and she quickly scanned for another girl with such hair. When she realized he meant her, her heart swelled; Tien was safe and aboard, she just needed to figure out where her sister was.
The blonde looked around at the amount of people and instantly felt panicked again, she took off for the only place she knew she'd be calm; the engine room. She recognized the layout of the ship as she saw the catwalk above the cargo hold. She took the stairs to the rear of the ship and ran passed every person she saw. She knew that sooner or later she was gong to have to get over her fear of people, but that wasnt gon to happen right now.

Victor holstered his weapon, looking around he could feel the panic from the crowd as they hysterically screams, cried, or just stood there with looks of horror on their faces. Victor couldn't find his little blonde savior in the crowd he assumed she must be hiding somewhere, looking back at the man standing in the cargo bay door Victor could since something as miss as he stood there with the launcher. This wasn't the time to psychoanalyze him, instead it was time to get out of here and the best way to do that was to get to the bridge. Victor made his way up the catwalks and to the fore decks, the place other then the refugees seemed empty where was this ships crew he wondered for a moment. Shacking the thoughts in his head he jumped up the stairs and into the bridge, a tall blonde woman was sitting in the pilots seat something about her looked almost familiar.
“When need to get this thing off the ground, can I help?” Victor asked, although he was no pilot he could follow commands and at least help out.

Tien was about to reply to the question which came over the comm, but then the mans voice sounded again. A wave of releif rolled over the woman when she heard that her sister made it aboard, it was evident in her tone of voice too. "I'm on it." She replied over the comm before flipping the necessary switches, and grabbed hold of the wheel. Knowing her sister was safe on board Tien could concentrate on getting the ship the out of here.
"Unless you can make those gorram Reaves disappear, nope." Tien replied glancing at the screens before her to see where the reaver shop was. "Go find the guy who captains this ship. Pretty sure its the guy with the scar on his face." Distractions were unwelcome at the moment, Tien wanted to fully concentrate on flying them outta here safely.

The Viator's captain was not terribly far from the cockpit, propped against the wall and holding himself up using the rungs of the ladder to the upper hatch. Eyes screwed shut, Tyler stood there and quietly tried to a breathing exercise to abate his headache without having to get his medicine. If he were summoned to the bridge, Ty would likely try to get someone into the engine room before heading up the the cockpit, uncomfortably seating himself in the co-pilot's seat.
Victor could sense that he was unwanted on the bridge and decided best to follow the woman’s orders. Vaulting down the stairs in a rush Victor was on his way back down to the cargo bay to find this scare face captain when he heard a noise in the galley. Victor moved swiftly but carefully towards the galley, concerned a reaver may have found its way on board. As he made it into the galley and past the dining table he could see the outline of someone standing at the hatch access. Creeping ever so slightly around the corner he brought the individual into view, to his relief it was just the person he was looking for. Unfortunately the man looked like he was in a intense amount of pain, this might have concerned him but for now Victor had other priorities.
“Hey, are you the captain?” Victor asked as he approached the man.
