After a creative writing passage about a half vampyre character a while back and I was interested in making that a character. After a while I started to think of things and, after a while, I don't know a lot of the thngs about what the traits Vampyres have. I know the standard things-no sunlight, no mirrors, no running water, needs blood and no crosses-but some of the things I know are conflicting due to what author we are going for. I want to know who will be able to help me and what traits I am missing. After that I want to get others to help me make a new character, the idea I wanted was to roll the dice and see what traits will be applied to the person and what won't be. Please inform me here or in PM to talk about the idea, I'd be more than happy to chat and make a new being with others.
Well that depends, there are a lot of sources you can use for vampires.
Those are just a few off the top of my head.
- Bram Stoker's Dracula
- Underworld
- Daybreakers
- Folklore/mythology
- World of Darkness - Vampire: The Masquerade
- World of Darkness - Vampire: The Requiem
Those are just a few off the top of my head.
As long as we can get as many of them that don't contradict each other. So whatever I can get will work for me. I know mainly about Bram and Ann Rice-though she didn't really do a lot besides make them not much different than a human. Just get what we can use and I'll do what I can to gamble traits.
Think about what kind of world/environment you want this character to belong to or be from and go from there. Crosses don't have much value--or meaning--as a weakness in a fantasy universe that uses completely fictional religions, for example; in that case, you'd probably go for a more generic 'holy symbol' weakness.
The main thing you want to keep in mind is what a vampire is and what that means to the world your character is from, as well as to your character his or herself. Most accounts agree that they are undead abominations that drink blood; keep in mind that how this is handled still varies widely from story to story. In some stories, people chase vampirism as an ideal, while others think of themselves as unclean and horrible once they're infected.
What other traits you choose depend on how folkloric or original you want your character to be. One of the coolest interpretations of vampires I know of is Vampire: The Masquerade. The story and mechanics behind them is fantastic, and each of the 13 bloodlines have one single specific vampire folklore weakness in addition to the sunlight and blood-drinking weaknesses shared by all vampires. This is a great example of vampire lore that is original without being unrecognizable.
Common folkloric weaknesses include being unable to cross running water, being unable to cross into homes without being invited, being unkillable unless a stake is driven through the heart, an aversion to garlic, and a compulsion to count the individual grains of substances like salt or pebbles if they're dropped and scattered. A lot of this is derived from historical accounts of demons, to which vampires were considered kin as unholy creatures.
There's a lot of choice and it depends on what you want to do with the character. In a world so rife with vampire interpretations, I'd really recommend giving it a good think and contemplating why your character would have the traits you decide for them.
Good luck!

Just a note, I don't think The WoD ones would work with a half-vamp. Vampires are unable to breed in that setting last I saw, though my experience is based off of V:TM not V:TR.
