Not sure if this has been suggested or not, but it might be useful if there was some way of knowing if an RPR PM had been read or not - a little red or green light on the side would be useful, in addition to the arrow that comes up to show that you have replied
I don't know if it's just your browser or not, but unread messages usually have a lighter background to make it distinct that it hasn't been read yet.
This has not been suggested before that I recall, and it's quite an interesting thought.
I have two concerns:
1. In large group conversations, indicating who had read what might get ugly (resolvable)
2. In large group conversations, this would inevitably undermine the anonymity of anonymous characters when they all swapped from read to unread as a block (much harder to resolve)
I also need to counterbalance the benefits of the feature vs. the time it would take to create -- it seems like the issue this would solve is people lying to you about whether or not they are ignoring you? I'm not sure where to place that in terms of importance. Seems like someone who doesn't want to talk, or who is forgetting to talk, will continue to not want to whether or not you know about it?

This idea has always made me quite antsy. I often read my messages (on RPR, FB, Whatsapp and Skype) but depending on my situation at the time, replying immediately may not be an option. I've had people become very upset with me for reading messages on my phone (which they're notified of when it happens) but not responding right away.
It's really not something I want on RPR to happen too. I think you make an excellent point - knowing about it doesn't change anything, if you poke them once or twice and you get no response while they're otherwise active, I'm pretty certain it's safe to assume you're being ignored.

I agree with Sanne on this. I often need time to reply and I don't like people to think that I'm not responding right away because I'm ignoring them. I've had similar issues with RP over facebook where often I have time to look at the message before bed/school/work, but not enough time to reply. I hate being that kind of jerk, but I don't like to reply without knowing exactly what I'm getting myself into, personally or with RP.
I agree with Sanne as well. I often don't feel in the mood or inspired enough to RP even though I have read a message, and don't want to feel pressured into having to do it as soon as I read a post, knowing that my partner will be expecting me to do so.
I'm also with Sanne on this one. While I'd love a way to know for sure if someone's looked at one of my messages yet, I'd rather not worry about the pressure that'd come in reverse. Plus, I think knowing someone had already seen my message would just make me check that much more frequently for a response while wondering what's taking so long and if there's a problem, etc., which just makes more stress.
