In the darkness of the forest, the trees hung over the lone path that cut through it, hiding the starlit sky from the creatures that wandered the ground. Along the sides of the path, odd floating lights casting an eerie glow on the path to make it visible. Everything was silent except for the sound of crickets and the wind rustling through the trees. A female wolf lay half-asleep in the grass near the path, just within the edge of the lights. The lights cast an odd whitish blue tinge on the tan fur of the wolf.

Thundering hooves broke the silence as a shadowy horse charged up the path, its rider shrouded by a dark cloak that was like mist, swirling around the rider and trailing after him. Lifting her head, the wolf woke up, blinking sleepily at the sight of the rider. A chill ran down her spine and she shrank down in the grass, watching as the man and his beast of darkness passed by. Just as suddenly as they'd come up the path, they vanished down it, fading into the night.

But a sense of uneasiness made it impossible for the she-wolf to go back to sleep. Getting up, she walked towards the path, looking around warily. As she drew near to the path, a shudder ran through the air and there was a flash of strange light.

If I have to watch this machine print these stupid comic books for another hour I'm going to lose my mind. Taylor checked the time on his dollar store watch, exactly an hour to go on his shift. Well that's just dandy, he thought. It was an easy day of after Friday-after-school work, but a boring one. His job was simple, watch the machines and make sure nothing goes wrong with them. Today everything seemed to be working fine. The presses fell with rhythmic beats and hydraulic hisses. Paper made harsh whistles as the industrial blades cut them to size.

So the minutes ticked by. The melodies of the factory continued, never changing, never missing a beat. As the shift grew closer to its end and the machinery show dragged on, Taylor felt he really might lose his mind by the end after all. The machines suddenly came to a screeching halt as sparks flew from one of the generators in the opposite side of the building as Taylor. "Attention. Attention. Generator malfunction, equipment is shutting down. All factory managers please report to the conference room. Repeat, all factory managers please report to the conference room." Taylor looked around as the artificial female voice came on over the loud speakers across the building.

"Alright, I guess you guys get to go home early. Have a nice night," called his manager. The manager was a tall, scruffy man who had a look that he had been breaking his back far to often for far too long. His tired eyes still remained watchful after all this time, and he scolded a new employee for an untucked shirt as he left the working area. Taylor glanced down at his watch, fifty nine minutes had passed since he last checked. He managed to keep his sanity after all... just barely.

As he exited the factory a young man trotted behind him to catch up. "Hey, Taylor, wait up!" Taylor knew the voice before he even saw the face of the speaker when he turned around. It was his close friend Billy, another factory worker and another high school senior like himself. "I read article in a magazine about dreams today. Seeing as you always have such vivid dreams, I figured you'd get a few laughs out of something like this!" Seeing a brief look of confusion on Taylor's face Billy pulled a rolled up magazine from the day back hanging on his left shoulder and handed it to Taylor.

"Hey, thanks," Taylor said as he took it and inspected the cover. Featured Article- Inside a dream. Doctors take a look and share what really goes on when you dream, part of the cover read.

"No problem, man! Hey, it's already late, I gotta get home before my mother thinks I'm sneaking out to meet girls again."

Taylor laughed softly and shook his head. "Maybe you shouldn't sneak out to meet girls in the first place," he teased.

Billy huffed as he turned to leave, "it was one time!" He called over his shoulder.

As soon as Billy left Taylor continued the short walk to his badly beaten Volkswagen bug. He threw the magazine onto the passengers seat as he climbed in and started up the car. I'm not so sure I want to know what's going on with me when I dream, he thought. Soon enough he was pulling into the parking lot for his apartment building and climbing the stairs to the fifth floor soon after, leaving the magazine resting in the same spot he had tossed it in his car.

Dinner was two packages of ramen noodles and a few slices of bread. Taylor ate, more to satisfy the hunger than anything else, and then proceeded with the rest of his after-work ritual. He stripped off the ink-stained pants and red employee shirt, pondered the ideas he had himself for comics as he ran out of hot water in the shower, then threw on sweatpants and a loose shirt. However, he skipped his sketches and plot work tonight and went straight to bed. It's not like these comics are going anywhere. They'll be there tomorrow. Sleep came as quick as a bird dog to its falling target.

Something didn't feel right as Taylor stirred. He wasn't in the squeaky, lumpy bed he had fallen asleep in. There was no warm comforter around him and no soft breeze from the fan above his bed. Something seemed terribly wrong, but the boy was reluctant to open his eyes, not wanting to know why things felt different. A flash of bright light faded as quickly as his thoughts did when he started feeling these sensations. With a huff he pulled himself to his feet and opened his eyes, taking in the scenery surrounding him. "I'm so not in Kansas anymore," he mumbled to himself. And you're dreams may officially be out of this world. Literally, he told himself mentally. He could feel the ground under his barren feet, smell the difference of air. This dream seemed all too vivid.

The appearance of a human startled the female wolf and she shied away, ducking behind a tree to avoid being seen. Ears pricking when the human spoke, she remained still for a while, pondering what to do. After a long moment, she stepped out from behind the tree and regarded the human with shy curiosity. Slowly, she circled around so she was on the path and in his full view, but just past arms length. Then, she came to a stop and faced him, regarding him with her intelligent amber eyes. Could it be? I didn't really ever think that the Oracle was right about something so far fetched... She waited to see what he would do at the sight of a lone wolf watching him. But... it might not be. Her mind turned over all the possible explanations for the strange appearance of a human in the middle of this path late at night. Briefly, her eyes wandered towards the direction the path lead. The home of... that thing. She shuddered to think of it.

A heaviness clung to the air of the forest, nearly suffocating to anyone who could sense it. Some dark presence hung over the forest and within it, tainting anything within its grasp. But, this dark presence seemed to be unable to cling to the human, instead rolling off him like water.
