Time seemed to freeze after Mitoka said that last sentence, Nico held his breath and his heart was racing a mile a minute. "H-how do you know that word?" He asked, though he already suspected the answer.
"...gah, come on, we can't talk about this here." He said, grabbing Mitoka's arm and dragging him out of the building to a more private area. "Alright, spill it, how do you know about Mamodos, are you Book Keeper... you here to fight?" He asked, slightly more hostile then before.
Nico was surprised by his answer, he had never met a Book Keeper that didn't want to fight, or... "Wait, no you're not a Book Keeper, or no you don't want to fight?" He inquired.
Now Nico was really confused, a Book Keeper that didn't want to fight was practically an oxymoron, what else could he possibly want. "O-ok, so what do you want with me?" He asked, hesitantly.
"Why, what do you mean why, I'm a Book Keeper, just like you." Nico replied. "My Mamodo partner tracked me down somehow and now we're fighting in the battle for Mamodo King, simple as that, what, you come across yours differently?"
"...you gonna elaborate on that a bit?"
"Can't talk..." Nico thought about that fact for a moment, and then it all made sense. If his Mamodo partner couldn't talk then he couldn't explain the Mamodo Battle to him, so that means... "Wait, so you mean you had no idea why the Mamodos were here until now?"
"...Ok, now I'm really confused, just start from the beginning, what's you're deal?"
"Well... I travel a lot. One day I found an injured animal, and decided to keep it till it was fully healed. The next day some kind of hunter came and attacked us. He had traps set all over the place, as if he knew exactly where I was going to be before I got there. I eventually got away, and decided to move. About a week later, some people who where able to create swords sharper then demands came after me. I moved again, this time it took about a month before some one came for me. At one point two different groups appeared at the same time. They said the word mamodo several times before fighting each other. When I saw your book, I thought that you might be with the people that keep coming after me, and that I could get some answers before I had to run again."
"Ok, so you know that the Mamodos are battling each other, but you don't know why, correct?"
"Hmm... alright, if you really are a Book Keeper then you really shouldn't be flying in blind, I'll fill you in." Nico replied, trying to think of where to begin. "Well, basically, the Mamodo Battle is a sort of Battle Royal type of thing, every 1000 years or so, 100 Mamodo children are sent here from the Mamodo World, each with a Spell Book that binds their powers." He began, bringing out his own Spell Book. "Once here, they find a human partner, one that is able to read their book and thus unleash their power, once they've partnered up they battle it out with each other, their goal is to burn the books of other Mamodos to send them back to their world, and the last one standing... is the next Mamodo King." He finished, placing his book back in his backpack. "My partner told me that Mamodos are naturally drawn to each other, even if you never seek them out, you'll always run into one eventually, that's what's been happening to you, as a Book Keeper, you're a part of this battle."
