"Happy god damn birthday to me," his eyes fluttered open around noon on June 14th. It was a Sunday and because this next week was Finals before school got out for summer, no one wanted to hang out for his birthday. He had gotten one message at least over night about someone wanting to come to his "celebration" tonight. It was custom that everyone at Harold Washington Tech attempted the twenty one drink challenge on their birthday, usually you had no less the two dozen friends to watch you fail, but tonight Rams had none. Well one maybe, an ex-girl friend from the beginning of freshman year. And now that they were about to finish up their third year at this boring ass school they had grown to be friends.
"Twenty One Drinks..." He smiled looking at the clock as he finished up studying. It was almost seven at night, his ex would be here at eight. He got another text, "two friends at least... That's something..." Only three people had completed the Twenty One drink challenge on their twenty first birthday. Monty Nash class of '85 the schools first class of juniors, Alex Desmond the pitcher of the schools baseball team on the first and only year they won nationals, class of '94. And lastly Ramsleys cousin Melody York, class of 2009. "I will join the golden three tonight and nothing will stop me!!!"

The sound of hardcore metal music was always Ellie's favorite type of alarm clock - especially if it was set by her roommate. Ellie groaned in frustration as she heard the familiar screams of Blessthefall fill the room, her eyes opening with a jolt as her hands went to cover her ears from the aching noise. Her drowsy eyes wandered over to her alarm clock, bright red numbers forming '6:48' in front of her. She sighed and sat up in her bed, rubbing out the drowsiness from her eyes. She considered screaming herself to ask her roommate why the music was put on high volume on this hour, but she didn't even dare try and ask. Her hands reached for her phone and she squinted at the brightness of the screen, unlocking her phone and tapping her finger at the messages icon.
Upon reading the last text she had sent just last night, she felt a small smile edge at her lips. Ramsley's birthday party was today, and she had heard about the infamous '21 Drinks' plan that he was attempting, to join the other two people who had done it successfully. This news only made her all the more pumped. It was the only exciting thing she was going to do over the boring weekend, which was only filled with studying for upcoming exams. Her fingers flew to the screen, quickly typing in a 'Happy Birthday, Rams!' and a few emoticons before clicking the 'send' button and switching her phone off. She threw her phone on the bed, before walking into the bathroom and beginning her daily morning routine. Before she started, however, she looked over her drowsy self with a bright grin. "Today's gonna be awesome." she whispered gleefully.

Rams hadn't looked at his phone most of the day but by seven thirty he read all the happy birthday texts, "twenty three people wished me happy birthday! Not too shabby..." He turned as the door opened behind him, his room mate Brian just got home, "Hey B, what's up!" His room mate turned to him almost as if a robot would, raising one hand, lighting up a fake smile before retiring to his bedroom. "Hey Brian, forgetting what day today is???" The room was silent as the door closed, this was not like Brian at all but in retrospect, Brian was a year older and was trying to graduate in the next five days so Rams could understand why his bunk buddy seemed exhausted.
"Well, I should probably hop in the shower, half hour till my party guests arrives..." A text alerted him that his friend Sam was no longer going to make it, "damn it Sam... These exams suck." He hopped in the shower and changed cloths as well. Black cargo shorts and a button down forest green shirt with a black tie were what he was wearing when he finally emerged from the bathroom. "Huh?" A small box sat upon his computer chair as he left, the box had a note on it.
Rams, Happy Birthday!
The gift I give is very important, keep it safe.

"That's odd," he said opening the small box with a blue bow on top. It was an orange and blue flash drive with words Key Drive carved into it. "I wonder what's on this..." A knocking at the door pulled him from his thoughts and he shoved the flash drive into his pocket. "That must be Ellie," he said smiling and answering the door, "8:04, late as usual," he smiled and let her in.

kelsie woke up at 5:50 as usual, she always liked to get up early so she could study or just pick her clothing for the day, it always took around 30 min. to pick an outfit. Ellie told her yesterday that she wanted to go to this birthday party for some dude called Ramsley, Kelsie had never heard the name before, even though there in thge same school, weird...she thought to herself, while she was picking out the dress for the party. "maybe this one..." she held up a beautiful black dress with long sleeves. the clock was around 8:00 now so she had to go.
Ellie spent most of her free time studying as well as preparing herself for the witness of the '21 Drinks', her excitement being far too overwhelming for her own good. Her roommate, Lydia, who was two years older than her, continued to blast her music as it apparently also helped her to study. The music was played in the room longer than usual, probably for finals coming up. Luckily, the apartment building they lived in barely had anyone living in it, so they never got any complaints of any kind.
The hardcore two hours of studying made Ellie tired, so she decided to lay on her bed and just take a 30 minute lap. Unfortunately, she ended up waking up an hour ahead of her schedule, her exhaustion having being far too much for just a 30 minute nap. She groaned in frustration and threw the covers off of herself, and then hopped into the bathroom, beginning to get ready. After the quickest shower and dressing up session, she walked out of her apartment building with a simple maroon dress that just ended at her knees and her hair down in its short style. "Damn, I'm gonna be late." she mumbled as she got into her car, and drove to Ramsley's place.
She finally reached his door, present in hand, and gave three swift knocks on the hard wood. A wide grin evaded her solemn look as it opened, revealing the birthday boy himself. "Happy birthday, Rams!" she squealed, stepping forward and enveloping him into the tightest hug she could muster - mostly to irritate him. "Sorry I'm late by four minutes." she said with an eye roll, before handing him his gift-wrapped present. "So, are you really gonna do that '21 Drinks' thing?"

He put the gift under his arm, "thanks, and yeah totally!" He smiled at the tight hug, usually this would have annoyed him but today she was the first person to see him other then his room mate who couldn't either tell him happy birthday. He closed and locked the door behind him as Kelsie walked up as well. "My cousin did it, and two others before her did it, I can totally do it!" He turned his attention to the new girl approaching, she was hot. Had Ellie brought him a girl for the night? He had kinda gotten the feeling she was trying to set him up with someone but he digressed. "Hey, I'm Rams, thanks so much for coming out to the bar with us tonight!"
Ellie felt a nostalgic grin on her lips as she made her way into the comfortable apartment, looking around and absorbing the atmosphere. It had been a while since she last came here. "We'll see about that.." she teased on his '21 Drinks' attempt, but her thoughts were interrupted when she heard the sound of clicking heels. With wide eyes, she ran over to his side to look to the door. "Woah, Kels actually came?" She remembered Kelsie, about the party some time ago, but never brought it up after that. It was a topic that was going around, and thought that the more people that came, the better. She raised a hand and waved at her friend enthusiastically.
It was only then she noticed the look on Ramsley's face, one she had seen plenty of times before. As much as she would have hated to say it, she felt her heart sink a bit with slight jealousy. She should have thought it through when she had invited the gorgeous Kelsie to his party - which involved drinking and alcohol. Over the past few years that they had been friends, she had developed the slightest hint of a crush for Rams, and it was very easy to get someone like her jealous. However, she didn't let any of this jealous come to her face, since it would be terribly rude to do so. "Welcome to the party, Kels!" she said with a bright, welcoming grin.

Rams was a bit bummed out when Kels got a call from her friend who was crying about one thing or another so she was gone by the time the York and Ellie got to the bar. "Duffy's a classic tavern, it's where my cousin did the 21 drink challenge and it's where I'm gonna do it." Walking inside he noticed a few people who said they would be too busy studying to attend, "what the hell man..." He said approaching one of his friends, "Rex, you said you couldn't come tonight..." But his friend ignored him talking to some other guy from the school. "How bogus is that," he said sitting down next to Ellie at the bar.
And just when Ellie had thought the party was going to begin, Kels received a call from a friend in distress and was gone. She frowned a bit, feeling sad that Rams' birthday party had gone upside down, with only one person showing up even though he was well known throughout the campus. She remained silent for once as they entered into the bar, the dim lights and the beat of the music not very familiar. She rarely went to clubs, mostly because the college life told her not to and she wasn't that much of a fan of alcohol and partying. She smiled as he mentioned of how this very same bar his cousin had gone to do her own 21 Drinks challenge. "Sounds like a plan." she said, but her voice quickly faded away as she noticed a few of his friends. She blinked in confusion, before looking to Rams and seeing that same confused look as well. That's when she knew this was not going to end well. As Rams talked to his 'friends', she was busy giving each and every one of them heated death glares, mixed with some leftover confusion as well. Once they walked away from them and toward the bar, she sat down on a stool and exhaled a loud sigh.
Immediately she noticed Ramsley's dull mood and she gently clapped him on the back, it being a friendly gesture to get him out of his mood. "Hey, they're just a bunch of idiots. They don't know how radically cool you really are - and I'm sure they'll know what they missed out on once they see you successfully complete the challenge."

They don't know how radically cool you really are - and I'm sure they'll know what they missed out on once they see you successfully complete the challenge."
"Drink One," he smiled as he looked at the bar tender. The man smiled, the only real gesture they had gotten from anyone since they left Kelsie. The man placed the first drink down in front of Ramsley, before the man offered Ellie a few drink specials. Clanging the first drink down Ramsley smiled, "second drink please."
Ellie grinned at how determined her friend seemed, looking over the menu of specials before handing it back to the bartender with her order - a simple non-alcoholic drink, since she really didn't want to get hammered today. Drunk Ellie was not a very nice or clever person compared to sober Ellie. As Ramsley continued his challenge, she felt like she wanted to turn around and glare at his so-called 'friends' one more time, but told herself to keep in control. "Go, Rams!" she cheered, encouraging him. It may be easy for now, but the challenge only gets harder - she knew this from Lydia, who had attempted to do the challenge but failed.
Washing the rum and coke down his gullet this was easy, the bar tender had already put the third drink up, the Pina... "What happened to that guy you went out with a few months back, you never told me what came of that." Sipping down his icy drink, the brain freeze was more effective then the intoxication.
At the question, Ellie suddenly stiffened, her usual confident barrier cracking the slightest bit. Her cheeks burned with heat of embarrassment. Usually Rams wasn't this nosy...well, usually he was, but not about something like this...could it perhaps be because of the alcohol? But it was the only third drink.. But then again, who was she to judge? Nonetheless, even though her mind desperately told her not to, she decided to spare a few details about the breakup. He was her friend.
"You mean Trent," she replied back softly. "He, uh...cheated on me with another girl after we had been dating for about a month...at least, I thought we were dating." She let out a bitter chuckle and looked away, pressing her lips together in an attempt to contain herself.

Still on his third drink Rams gestured for the bar tender to get Ellie a more... "Enjoyable beverage." Rams never really liked Trent, but he wasn't all a bright shinning hero himself. Ellie and him had gone out when they were freshmen, the relationship lasted around four months and had ended in about the same way. Ellie had said some or another to piss him off so on the day before he wanted to end it he had slept with someone else. In the morning he ended it but wanted to stay friends, he had never told her but assumed she knew. "Cheating is awful, if you don't like someone don't lead them on like that... That's my opinion."
Her eyes widened as a more 'enjoyable drink' was placed in front of her, this one definitely containing some alcohol. Just before she was about to take a tiny sip of it, Rams' talk about cheating through her off guard. She chuckled again at how ironic he sounded. "Wish you told me that before..." She mumbled, the ache of their past relationship enough to make her take a long sip from her drink.
Finishing his third drink the fourth was placed before him, "you knew didn't you... About Taylor and me the night before we broke up two years ago..? His drink consumption had slowed down emensly as he instantly regretted his choice of conversation. He took a sip of... Um, whatever he had before him. This birthday was the worst one ever, studying and drinking with his ex-girl friend, friendly terms or not this had gotten extremely AWKWARD!!!
She held back a laugh and settled with a knowing grin for now. "Yup. Especially when Taylor told me that you both slept together in my face." Her breathing became shallow and her emotions wavered, probably because of the intense alcohol consumption - she was drinking her drink like it was water.
Ellie cleared her throat, shaking her head a bit. "Let's, um...not settle on the past and talk about something else - it is your birthday after all."
Ellie cleared her throat, shaking her head a bit. "Let's, um...not settle on the past and talk about something else - it is your birthday after all."
"Yeah I'm sorry," he took a sip from his glass and realized he had finished his Long Island Ice Tea. "Next up is fireball! You gotta take a shot of this with me!!" He smiled as he gestured to the bar tender to bring him and Ellie who short glasses of cinnamon whiskey. "To lost love," and with that Ramsley chugged his drink, a air of intoxication creeping up on him a bit faster now.
"Fireball?! That shit burns!" she said in a somewhat scared voice, worriedly looking to the full shot glass next to her. She laughed nervously as she saw the bartender smile at her, and she wasn't so sure if it was one out of sympathy or just plain manners. But once she saw Rams lift his own, she did as well - it was nice to let loose once in a while. During her high school years, it mostly consisted over her rebelliously ditching class or dating boys or something like that. In college, all of that disappeared, and now she felt less rebellious than before, something she missed.
"To lost love." she said, and chugged down her drink. A second later she was doubled over, coughing as an attempt to mask the burning sensation in the throat. "It burns..." she moaned.

Rams laughed and pulled his friend back to her chair, "not that bad," he laughed hugging her. "Thanks again for joining me today, Rex and Ian are asses, and Samantha and Jess are off my Christmas card list." He smiled at her, the thoughts of two years ago simmering forward from the back of his mind. Why had he wanted to break up in the first place, was it something big? Or just a stupid fight?? He couldn't remember, they had just been friends so soon after none of that seemed to have mattered before. "I miss you," he said without thinking. A white tide washed over his face and from his perspective the room went silent, he hardly heard the sixth drink being put down next to him. "I mean we don't hang out as friends as much," he tried to cover it up but it was probably the most obvious thing in the world.
