Derik strode across the cracked, crimson-stained cobblestone walkway, an assault rifle slung across his shoulder, gas mask fixed across his face. The smog was unbearably heavy in the fallen town. Decomposing bodies littered the borders of the city, filed high without care, and the building stood, crumbling, the last sign of life deteriorating. The smog was thick with radiation, and his gas-mask required a new filtering system. Pillaging the nearby convenience stores, he ransacked the interior, searching for a temporary substitute. I guess a sponge will have to do. (Education time!: The small littered pores of the common household dish-washing sponge, when wet, can act as a filtration system for any polluting substances. The material has smaller dotted pores throughout the small, circular openings. These pores will trap the substances inside them, while the water molecules make the substances stick to them. This will only work for a short period of time, roughly about four hours. End of education time!) Using the remaining contents of one of his water bottles, he quickly re-equipped the sponge with the military-grade filtration system. Breathing heavily, he then began to trifle through the rest of the store looking for any possible medical equipment.
The grocery store had been picked clean long ago, the supplies long gone. Very few people remained in the area anymore, choosing instead to go to the outposts littered across the globe. A safe haven from the mindless monsters that the smog brought about. The creatures were deformed and only had one goal, to destroy what was left of humanity.
A young girl had holed up in the grocery store, setting traps around the area to keep out what she called the "crazies". Hearing the footsteps of something coming into her makeshift home and moving things around, the girl moved stealthily through the ceiling. It was safer to move up here than down where all her traps were, she couldn't even remember where all of them were located. Tripwires, bear traps, mines, and anything else she had managed to make out of spare parts around the area. The intruder was about to get a rude surprise.
