Hello guys! I was just wondering if any of you like tragic love stories such as Romeo and Juliet, books of Nicholas Sparks, or any story that has a sad ending. I was just thinking of this 'cause I am a total tragic-addict. But not in a negative way. I just have this taste for drama because it brings out reality in some way.
When I begin writing a happy story, I always end up making it tragic. I really don't know why. Even if it's okay to make the ending happy, I just have this feeling that it's better to make it tragic. So is there any tragic lovers there? I hope I'm not the only one. :)
I do like Romeo and Juliet, though I have never heard of Nicholas Sparks :P I'll look into him.
I don't think I'm a lover of tragedy... I mean, sure, for some stories, it's works best, but I tend to favor happy endings. That said... when I get settled into an RP that I'm really enjoying, they often do take a turn toward the tragic. And... I may or may not get really excited about it. >.>

But I see attempts at "tragedy" all the time that are just... terrible. The characters involved are just whiny, or there's a simple (or somewhat complex, but still certainly accessible) solution to the problems, etc. Sometimes it's melodrama over a minor issue... Sometimes it's a problem that just doesn't fit... And sometimes it's just poor characterization. Because of all that, I tend to be wary of extended dramas and such, where the chance of running out of ideas and ruining things keeps rising. ^^;
I live off of serious stuff. I like my books, television shows and roleplay with drama and serious plotlines. I tend to miss out on that because I find that most of the people I mesh with don't want to play these hugely dramatic plots. I want people to die, I want characters to hurt, I want there to be unforgivable fights. I live off of drama.

Most of the people I play with end up bringing out the best in me or they're not interested so I hold back. I've had a few really good, tragic roleplays that end with both players crying (and sometimes some spectators!), but it's never enough.
Tragedy is like the ultimate litmus test of interest for me: if I could care less when something absolutely horrible happens in a story then something has inherently failed at some level.

Its a certain level of investment that goes into a story. The more effort and time I put into a story and the characters within it, drawn into their lives, hopes, and dreams the more gut-wrenchingly horrific it becomes when they lose something. If an "Oh God..." or "You Son of a...!" cannot be elicited from me when something bad happens to the characters then I am just not into it, which in turn, I think, means that any good story has to include tragedy on some level...

... and yet in my RP style I tend to avoid tragedy quite a bit. Rarely do I actively look to create it, just react to it, but when it happens, as I mentioned before, I can definitely tell if I am into what I am RPing.
I'm a musician, and every time I try to write a happy-ish song it turns out really dark and depressing.

I can somewhat relate to that. Most people prefer happy moments. They dislike the thought of putting too much drama in an RP.
