Coren Bennett stared down at the squires practicing in the field below before turning to Cadwell Gregory--a fellow knight--with disdain. "How are we going to take the North with these sorry excuses for combatants?" He grumbled.

Cadwell shook his head with a chuckle. "Come on, Corey-boy, I think you are being a bit too hard on the young ones." He smiled and gestured down at the training squires. "They're a little green behind the ears, but we all were once. They'll do just fine. Just gotta get that first taste of freshly spilled blood."

Galncing at Cadwell, Coren pushed off from the viewing balcony and made his way to the stairs. "I guess we'll find out. We need the bodies up at the pass."

"You know, it might help if you gave me more time to train'em." Cadwell sighed. "You don't give me enough time before you're back here in the city looking for more able bodies to send to war."

"Like you said, it's war." Coren frowned. "We aren't exactly fairing well against the North." He trailed off, not mentioned his thoughts on the war--that wasn't his decision to make.

Coren bid Cadwell good day and headed over to the weapon-smith, preparing to head back up to the pass within a two week's time with much needed reinforcements. Until then, there were many preparations to be had. There were supplies to be gathered. Men to be gathered. Strategies to be discussed. Updates to be given. By all means, times were grim.

The air was cold and chilly on the forests around the great capital. The coldness however was not only that of the season, but also from the sense of dread and fear of ambush that the customary travelers of such forests felt. Bandits, oh how they loved these forests.

By any means, that did not faze the cloaked figure that was traveling around the forest at all, her hazel green eyes scanning the area not for caution, but rather out of sheer boredom. The figure smiled, amused, as she took sight of the capital in the horizon. Where are the famous bandits of these roads, anyway? She expected some sort of crude assault.

Removing the hood of the cloak that was obscuring her face, rich sand hair and flawless, creamy white skin were instantly revealed: The figure was none other than a beautiful young woman. She was donned in somber priestess garbs, hair tied in a simple ponytail, her well cut fringe covering her face in all the right places, endearing the maidens graceful features. However the coldness of her eyes and the cruelty that danced at the corners of her mouth broke the illusion of perfection instantly.

Nudging her horse gently, the maiden headed towards the great city, enemies of the North - her despised home country, with a sense of purpose guiding her through her annoyance.

"Do we have to see the seer tonight...sir?" The young foot soldier complained, haphazardly adding the honorific to avoid coming off too insubordinate.

Coren stopped in the middle of the trail and turned to the young man, as he pulled the at the ragged, black cloak to reveal his face. "You're orders are to accompany me. Are you refusing those orders?" He demanded, reaching for his sword--inadvertently revealing his armor to anyone passing by on the trail.

"No, sir." The young man stammered, raising his arms to defend against Coren's blow, but it never came.

He just turned back to the trail and continued on their journey before pausing not a minute later. "Here that?" He questioned the young soldiers. "We aren't alone out here. With all the reports of bandits and enemy spies on this road, the Knight Commander deemed it necessary that I not go about this journey alone." He explained, as he corrected his cloak to cover the silver of his armor and the crest of his kingdom--not that ragged cloak provided much coverage, yet he refused to switch to a new one.

He glanced back at his subordinates one last time before running his hand through his short, chestnut-colored hair and pulling the hood of the cloak back over his face--it would do no one any good to know that the knight in charge of the force up at the pass was traveling through the forest with little-to-no back-up. "Not that I feel you'd be much use to me."

The sound of a horse caused Coren to pause for a moment. His hand coming to rest on the hilt of his sword. Noting the priestess garb, Coren bowed his head and motioned for the foot soldiers to move to the side. The other foot solider glanced at the woman on the horse curiously, as they let her pass, muttering, "What is a priestess doing traveling a road like this alone?"

Near the gates of the city, the woman noticed a pair. Her eyes narrowed - Just when she thought she was so close of entering unnoticed...

Still, she said nothing, and kept going. Maybe if she ignored these men, they would leave her alone as well. She couldn't be recognized, but there was no time to put her hood back on. Her features were very similar of that of one person that comes from the north - after all she was once a citizen of such a accursed region... Until they broke her.

They really have broken her.

With remembered hate from her past, she gripped the reins of the horse until her knuckles turned white as she passed the two men, using her coldest, hardest, stern face.

The foot soldier looked at Coren. "Sir, are we really just going to let that woman pass without so much as a single question of intent?" He turned to watch the woman on the horse. "We don't get many travelers coming from this direction."

Coren sighed at the soldier. "Travelers and wanderers are not my concern." He gave one glance last glance at the woman on the horse. His own complexion more similar to that of the inhabitants of the North than the natives of this kingdom.

The foot soldier looked at the woman. "But look at her."

"As I said," his words sharp, growing frustrated with the foot soldier, "it is none of our concern. A traveling priestess doesn't have the command or power to cause much harm. Let her be." He ordered. "Or, are you willing to get in the way of any business she may have here: religious, healing, or otherwise?" He questioned. "Now, come. We are wasting time. I'd like to get to the seer and back before nightfall."
Aeria (played anonymously)

Realizing that after a few stares the men wouldn't dare question her, Aeria relaxed.

She kept going until she finally entered the city. The hushed activity noise and somber atmosphere let her see for herself how the war with the North were taking its toll on these people. She wondered how they were keeping it up, but then again, there is no other option for them.

She found a stable and left her horse there, muttering darkly under her breath about greedy stable owners. Moving gracefully but with sheer determination, the woman kept going through the city until she reached the lowtown district. Pulling her hood back up, the woman entered the den of wolves.

At first there was the hustle of the commerce, but as she kept going deeper and deeper, through stretch corners and alleyways, she reached the darkest places of the district. The smells were much more foul now, people lying on the pavement of the slums crying out in hunger or vice. Asking the beggars a few questions with a harsh voice and even a kick when one of them tried to grab her feet, Aeria had her answers and finally found an old and decaying building that reeked of sewer and something even more repugnant

Disgusting, she thought. Must be the place, certainly.

Entering without knocking the door, she found herself on a dark room. Cobwebs and dirt covered the place and the air was thick with a suffocating quality. Where was the cretin that she was looking for?

"My, it seems that I've got some visit, didn't I?" Said a voice laced with malice and amusement.
"Where are you? Show yourself. I have no patience for games." She said with stern arrogance and disgust.

A man dressed in old tattered robes with golden brown eyes and a pale, bony face emerged from a set of old curtains. He had a sickening smile, his gray hair combed in a wild manner, typical madman. The woman's eyes narrowed, and he noticed her garbs and posture.

"Ah, so a customer, aren't you!? Sit, sit, and let us discuss our little business!
"I'd rather rot standing than touch anything in this place." 'I have disgraced myself enough for just being here' She thought with bitterness.

The man smiled and his expression darkened.

"So I presumed that you have came for "that herb", haven't you? Not many people these days have access to that, and judging by your looks... You must be from the northern lands."
"Where I am from doesn't concerns you. Now, my patience is thin, so tell me how much the dragontail herb costs and let us get this over with" The woman replied sternly. Without the illegal herbs, she couldn't execute her carefully laid plans. She was sick of running away.

Coren paused and looked at the surrounding trees before suddenly veered off the dirt road into the woods. He followed some unseen path, weaving through the trees and undergrowth until they reached a small hut.

He turned to the foot soldier. "Wait out here." He ordered before pulling open the door and heading inside.

The seer looked up at Coren. "I've been expecting you, young one." He said, cheekily. "I've seen that things are not well. The king wants my take on what will become of the kingdom."

Coren remained standing, but answered the seer. "That is why I have come."

The seer was quiet for a long while. "But I cannot help you."

Coren's eyes widened. "Why not?"

The seer frowned at Coren. "You didn't let me finish." He remained silent for a few more minutes. "There is something in the way. Some magical force... something knocking fate out of alignment. Where that magic will take the kingdom is yet to be known." He waved Coren off and resumed tending the fire for his dinner.

Coren wanted to ask more. He wanted more answers, but the old man would give no more than he was willing to offer, so he turned to take his leave.

Coren stormed passed the foot soldier. "Come on. We must return to the city."

"Did the seer advise you?" The subordinate questioned.

"That is none of your concern." He snapped and wandered back to the dirt road and back towards the city.

It was almost night already when the lady left the old decaying build, a scowl in her face, the illegal dragontail herbs bundled in a small cloth inside her pouch. She got out of the lowtown and got back to the stables where she got her horse back. Or was supposed to get her horse back.

There, at the entrance of the stables, a being the size of a child stood smirking, a cup of wine in his hands. Blue eyes, dark brown hair, he had a manly yet handsome face, for a dwarf.

"Say milady" he started, taking a slow sip on his drink. "Do you happen to be a priestess?"
"Who are you, and why do you ask?" she countered, coldly.
"I am Sedrick Holygrail, fourth son of Theodore Holygrail of the east." He said, kissing her hand in his antics. "I've been waiting for you ever since the gatekeepers told me a priestess had come into town, and happened to leave her steed here."
"Oh, so it seems. Can you please step aside, my lord, so I can get such a steed? The road gets ominous by the hours." She said, not impressed.
"I'm afraid not my lady, we are in need of your assistance, you see..." Sedrick finished his drink "My men had been severely injured, and are in need of a healer. I cannot ask the lords of this town for assistance since they believe we are with the North in this war - which of course is not true!".
"I have no interest in the matters of the war, I just wish to be on my way."
"And you will! Just help me heal my lads and I'll let you go, but not with empty hands..." He said, showing her one of his trinkets. Aeria smiled with disgust at the imp lordling.
"Like I said, I have no interest in the matters of the war, dwarf. And when had I said I were a priestess? Now move." Aeria glared daggers at the small man, who just smiled and got out of her way, but not without a friendly warning when the lady gave him her back, pulling the reins of her horse:
"Well, you didn't deny it either milady. Just know that a priestess that refuses her duty, is certainly not a priestess, but a witch. And we all know what happens to such wenches when one hears their cry amidst the flames."

And she left, crazy enough to go back to the road in the dark of the night.

"One more complaint and you won't have to worry about the bandits." Coren snapped, gritting his teeth together. "I'm not blind. I can see that the sun has set. I realize that means we are walking back to the city in the dark." He frowned at the foot soldier.

The foot soldier opened his mouth to protest, but Coren pressed a finger to the man's lips. "And, before you even ask, we aren't setting up camp in the woods tonight." He huffed and started walking again. "Now, come on, we need to get back to the city."

"Was what the seer said that dire?" He chanced a whisper to himself.

Unfortunately for the man, Coren overheard him. "Silence!" He demanded before mumbling to himself. "Next time I'm going alone. I'd rather deal with the bandits."

The foot soldier cringed and silently followed his seething superior.

Aeria gently nudged her stallion to stop, trying to listen for the sounds around the forest. It was eerie, so eerie that a cold shiver went up her spine. In her haste to be rid of the dwarf, she got reckless.

There, surrounding her behind the thick and tall trees were bandits, carrying light bowguns and daggers, all of them loaded to shoot her fast enough and sharp enough to slith her throat.

Godammit!
"So, the cowards decided to show themselves so as to ambush a lady at night. Have none of you some decency? I'm a priestess!"
"If ye're priestess, I'm a king, witch!" Said a dirty bandit, holding her hands against a tree and touching her body, eyeing her with hungry eyes. Another man held her pouch with the dragontail herbs and money inside, while the others were with her stallion.

"Oy Simeon, the woman only has some gold coins and weeds!"
"These are not weeds! Be careful when you touch them!" She said, trying to warn the man, but it was too late: The man started to swallow the herbs, laughing at the priestess.

The other man, Simeon, started to caress her more intimate parts.
"Say wench, have you ever had a man in your bed? Because if not, this is going to be even better for you!" He said, laughing and kissing her forcefully.

Coren paused his foot soldier, hearing a commotion in the distance. With a shared glance, they quietly started to move forward again. His hand reaching for his sword, carefully withdrawing the sword from the hilt with his other hand reaching for a dagger. He crossed into the woods, not wanting to be spotted by whatever laid ahead.

It wasn't even a few moments before they came across the bandits surrounding the priestess and her horse. Noting the Simeon with the priestess, Coren stopped his subordinate and aimed the dagger for the man.

In a quick, coordinated move, the foot soldier stepped onto the path, making sure to make enough noise to be noticed by the bandits. In the same instance, the dagger came flying from the trees, aimed at the side of Simeon's neck. Satified with hitting the man, Coren stepped from the bush with a frown. "A man should know better to go after a priestess," he tsked at the bandits while leveling his sword in case they came after him.

Simeon felt a sharp pain in the side of his neck, while clutching it desperately, trying to stop the bleeding. He took two steps away from Aeria, then fell on his back, dead.

Another of the bandits - the one who chewed on her precious herbs - was having convulsions on the ground, probably due the dragontail herbs effects. Suddenly the man was bleeding from all the pores of his body, a pool of his blood and other bodily fluids covering the ground.

Seeing this, one of the bandits let go of the horse reins and aimed his bowgun at her :"Witch!" He shouted, enraged.

Aeria ducked and hid behind the trees as the bandit continued to pursue her, Leaving his other two comrades to fight against the soldiers.

The heaviest of them, wielding double daggers charged against coren, while the other tried to shoot the foot soldier several times.

Coren raised his sword against the bandit charging towards him, "Daggers against a sword?" He questioned, tsking at the move. "You might as well be unarmed." He glanced at the man, who was clearly bigger than Coren. "And, I'd bet that I'm faster than you." He smirked. Coren knew he was a cocky fighter, but he'd emerged victorious the majority of time, making it harder when he was bested. However, this battle wasn't something Coren was particularly worried about. He swung his sword at the bandit, aiming for his neck.

The foot soldier ran for cover from the arrows among the trees. If he stood any chance in this battle, he would need the element of surprise on his side. The foot soldier hid behind a tree for a moment. What was Coren thinking charging these men when they were clearly outnumbered? It was foolish. It was a death trap. Why should he risk his life for one person when an entire country needed him elsewhere? He looked out at the bandit before ducking back behind a tree, thinking of making a run for it.
