In the Journal widget you can manipulate the years in order to move them forwards and backwards, which is helpful for folks roleplaying in different time periods. This is really great by itself, but it only works well if you are roleplaying a time period relative to our current calendar.
I would like to have the option to change the date/year manually in this widget, which would be really useful to players in continuities where the calendar or era is entirely unrelated to our own - for example in futurisitic or science fiction roleplays. (I have yet to figure out a way to make this work.)

I definitely see the value in it, and it's been discussed before. The biggest barrier to making this work, and making it easy to use, is that the journal widget uses dates to determine the order that it displays posts, which makes complete fantasy dates a more complex proposition.
