Zombi

Really not sure what brought this on, but I find myself often seeing characters in games, console, online, etc and feel a kinship between them and my original character. So just out of the blue I was wondering what other people used as influences when making their character.

Me, myself I had started my character out loosely mixing in elements from characters such as John Constantine, Alucard (Hellsing) and Sylvannas Windrunner. Weird combination there, I know xD

Well, it happens to me quite often. Amongst others, Sherlock Holmes, the entire Nosferatu clan of V:TM, Kenpachi from Bleach, and a big collection of narcissists seem to have some of their perks sledgehammered into my characters.

Much love to Kenpachi, they do not have him in the show or books for my taste. :3
I do that kind of things all the time. Unfortunately I can't recall all the characters that were put into creating my own >>
I don't see my characters in other places, but that may be because I like to think my creations are so wonderfully awesome and unique! That and, well, the thought never really crossed my mind.

Though I am influenced by a number of sources, usually games I've played. I don't know why it's games (console or online) that always weigh so heavily on me but they do. Comics and the like I read tend to influence me also but usually to a lesser degree. I think it's the visual storytelling element that gets me. For example:

My main character, Runetta, started as a pretty lame, anthro-ized clone of a video game character from a period in time that is better left forgotten. Then a feral from a time less shameful but still facepalmed at. But as I took in an interest in the concept of fairy-furries a few years ago, I started to develop an actual character. The first influence came from Furcadia's official canon. Then a discovered DMFA. I really liked the core design of the Fae race from that and implemented it into Rune's design. But I can never carbon copy. My overflowing imagination won't let me. So I add my own touches and run with it. And the funny thing in all of this is that the original character - Runetta, the innkeeper's wife from the Unicorns of Balinor series (middle school reading, whatwhat) - doesn't even leave a hint of influence nowadays.
Quite alot for the one on my repository profile but there alot i haven't wrote down as it would be massive. But as i made him i realised just how many characters share large or even just tiny bits of him. I just listed ones i first think of when thinking about my oc.

We all get our references somewhere even if we don't realise it at the time. But Lewis is really my first multi-storyline character as all others were just to fit a role. I mostly listed people who are jerks, but my character also has this hero sprit too so i listed those and a pervert or two )
I can't really.. say any. But that's probably because I haven't thought about it. I mean, you could put big boobs and a red wig on anyone and call it Siena. She's visually uncreative - black/red combo, big boobs. Which is perfectly fine by me.

I always get questions about my first character on Furcadia, Rydia, regarding her name - "oh, from Final Fantasy IV?". Kind of, sort of, but only in a loosely disconnected fashion. The name's the only thing they share, and she's not actually named after the game-Rydia - she's actually named after an earlier, Dragonriders of Pern character of mine, who was named after the game character in a roundabout fashion.

Rhaetia definitely shares some similarities with an existing character, though - her physical looks are based upon Orihime Soletta of the Sakura Wars series. She actually looked rather different when I initially designed her, but the game I was applying to with her required a 'Played By', something that could be used to represent their looks and emotions in icons. I can't draw worth beans, so doing my own was out, and the pictures I found of Orihime seemed to cover the emotional territory I needed for the icons, so that design it was.
I know nothing of the original character, having not ever played the series, so it's come to the point where seeing merchandise or drawings of her triggers a 'hey, look, it's Rhaetia!' response.

Serenne isn't based upon any existing characters, but the idea of mortal valkyries came from The Wolf and the Raven.

Icewing, whom I've not yet had the time to grace with a page, is an anka - a bird from Arabian mythology that was somewhat similar to the classical phoenix, except they lived in icy mountains, appeared to doomed travellers, and occasionally swooped down upon villages to eat babies and small children. Anyone familiar with certain legendary birds and Pokedexes might recognize the icy mountains/doomed traveller bits, and understand why she has a really friggin' long tail.
I'm kinda lame when nameing characters but i like it. I use name generators and often end up using a name someway connected to a character i associate my oc with. But i quess it works even if totally obvious.
I created my character Orpheus. I hate to point it out, but I realized after awhile that he was influenced very much by Ikuto from the Shugo Chara! series. Unintentionally of course. It seems these things have a way of affecting us subconsciously. In that sense there's no such thing as art that comes from nothing, it cannot be created in a void, so nothing is 100% original. Our lives paint our creations.

Uhm, Charlie, who isn't up here, is very much a cross between Mr. Gibbs and Mr. Cotton from Pirate of the Caribbean.

Those are the main ones off the top of my head, my other chars are a bit more abstract or scattered in their origins.

Akolouthos: partially inspired by Bagoas from Alexander, although I then read into the mythology and made him older. I don't think Bagoas was a mythical creature either.

Romain/Strav: God knows, rofl. The Brollakan, the Stargate Wraith and whatever else crawled into my twisted little mind while I was typing.

Those are the only two that I can think of that have actual solid inspirations.
All of my characters are based partially off of someone I know in real life.
Except Rikoki, who is almost entirely ME with better hair and a slimmer waistline (go figure).

Fun fact: My persona/fursona THING (the purple one) is based physically off of Dante from DMC. Don't judge me.
Oh god. I can't really associate any characters with Stell xDD

Fyren's personality was based off Scott Evil from Austin Powers and Dan Mott from Without a Paddle (Seth Green ftw)

My friend says that apparently reminds her a lot of Soldier from TF2 xD

Oh, after giving it some thought...

I forgot to mention that Nitsua has half of his powers based on Kuja (Final Fantasy 9), and the other half on the series-recurrent Blood Sword, with some Luca Blight (Suikoden 2) added to the mix, while Sitta was based on Lloyd (Legend of Dragoon). Ranran is more than somewhat based on a Kobold from Suikoden 2 as well (shamelessly so, but all three changed in due time).

So yeah. I like RPGs.
