Malakai pressed the pads to Jett's chest, "Wake up dude, CLEAR!", he'd yell at the top of his lungs while shocking Jett, "Crap, he's still down, CLEAR!", Malakai would reach over and turn on some tech off to the side at this point, "There, I think he's back."
Jett would begin to breathe again and as well his eyes would open, only to shut again. "He's stable, but I've got to turn that tech off now!", Malakai seemed a bit panicked, but for a kid of only 13 he was doing a fine job.

Cynthia watched worriedly, and then sighed in relief when she saw him start to breathe again. She took his hand and held it. "I'm here, Jett. I'm here." She glanced at Malakai. "How are you going to do that? Isn't it a part of him?" She was highly impressed at this kid. She would definitely be asking more questions later.
He looked over at her, "He didn't explain how this stuff works did he?", Malakai was trying to concentrate on his work, he would remove Jett's shirt, it would reveal along with all of his scars a very large one down the front of his body...
"That's how...", Malakai would cleanse where he planned to perform surgery, "Do me a favor, don't watch, if you watch I'll get nervous, and I can't get nervous.", Malakai meant well.

Cynthia shook her head. "No, he didn't..." When he showed that huge scar, Cynthia felt like she would throw up. All she did was give a nod, then she hurried to whatever area of the lab was farthest away. She did not want to be any part of that. Just thinking that Jett was getting cut open nearly made her break down. She just sat down and took deep, steady breaths. Focusing on good thoughts. What they would do when they had free time to spend together. Where they would go, the fun things they would do. If he survived all this, that is...
Malakai would perform the surgery, taking out large amounts of tech, "Crap...", Cyn would likely be able to hear, "I'm not sure what to do here...", he would then go back to work and finish up working on Jett, after a few hours, he would call for Cyn, "Could you come here please?", it didn't sound good, or bad... different would be the best description in the tone of the kid's voice.
Cynthia covered her ears for a while. That didn't sound good at all when he said 'crap'. She just tried to focus, tried not to freak out. When he called for her though, she managed to get to her feet and walk over, steeling herself for what she was going to see. "...yes...?" She wasn't sure she wanted to come over, but if the kid needed her, then...well, he needed her.
"What's your name again?", he would pause, "You're the girl right? The one Jett is with?", he didn't wait for he reply, "There's a problem, it's one way or the other.", he took a deep breath, "If I remove this tech, there is an 80% chance that Jett will become paralyzed from the neck down.", he would give her a moment to let that sink in, "The other option is to leave the tech in and repair and upgrade it... I know he wanted this stuff out, but I could make him better, less negative effects and more power... but I don't want to make that choice for him...", he would walk over to the table where Jett laid, "He's okay for now, but we need to make a decision in the next day or two, and he's not going to be here for any of the decisions we make."
Cynthia followed him to the table. "Cynthia. My name is Cynthia. And...yes. I am." She thought for a few long moments, touching Jett's cheek gently. "If you repaired it and upgraded it....this could still happen again, couldn't it?" She didn't want to risk losing him again. But...this decision...it was big. She couldn't make this decision for him. What if she chose wrong, and when he woke up, he hated her forever? She took in a shaky breath.
"It's possible, but not as likely, the point of my upgrade is to remove heat from the tech by venting them through his body, it would only happen again if those vents became blocked.", Malakai had done some deep thinking about this, "I get that you don't want to make the wrong choice, and if it makes you feel any better I think the upgrade is the way to go, so long as you don't tell him that.", Malakai had a deep respect for Jett, it was obvious, "Take some time, I'm going to go clean up and get some food, do you want anything?" Malakai walked past her to make his way to the lift.
Cynthia listened to him. "...I see." Don't tell him? She didn't like the sound of that. But...Malakai knew what he was doing. He knew the risks. And 80% was pretty high. "Huh? Oh, yeah...whatever's fine, thank you.." she said as he left. She pulled up a chair and sat down, sighing. "What am I supposed to do, Jett? You want this stuff out of you, but I know if you did get paralyzed...you wouldn't be happy. You're too active, and you hate depending on people. But this tech almost killed you. I don't want it to kill you again..." She held his hand and closed her eyes. "I wish you could give me at least a little advice.."
The room was quiet once the lift ascended into the ceiling of the lab, it was cold down there. There was the technical sounds like before, but a deep silence filled the room, it's as if time stopped, there was nothing.
Cynthia just sat there, watching him. "Of all the moments we've had where time seems to stand still....why did it have to be this one?" She sighed and laid her head down on the table, closing her eyes. Her hand still held his. That was all that mattered right now. She was holding his hand, and one way or another, things were going to get better. She was with him. He was with her. That was the only important thing. That they were together.
After about an hour Malakai returned with some food, nothing special, a sandwich and a drink, "Hey, didn't know what you liked so I figured, who hates Bologna?", he would uncomfortably laugh, "You know what I mean?"
Malakai would lay the sandwich container next to Cyn and go sit down at his computer, not far from her.

Cynthia smiled slightly. "Yeah, it's fine, thanks." She took the container and opened it. She started eating, then paused and glanced at him. "Malakai. I want you to fix it and update it, please." She looked at him. "It's not worth the risk. Jett would hate himself if he was paralyzed. He can't stand being a burden to others. He wants to do things for others, not have others do things for him..." She looked at the unconscious man. "I just hope I know him as well as I think.."
Jett's body would remain on that table for a few hours and Malakai would remove, update, and sometimes replace the pieces of the technology that kept Jett alive.
Malakai would work on Jett clear into the following day, the kid was exhausted, but it could be seen this wasn't some normal procedure for him, he cared about Jett. Occasionally he would take a break merely to keep him from making mistakes. The entire process would take in excess of thirty-six hours... Malakai had finished finally...
"It's done...", Malakai would sit down in a chair near the table and pass out... Malakai was fine, exhausted, but fine...

Cynthia was there the entire time, bringing Malakai food and fetching tools for him, whatever he needed. When he finally passed out, she fetched a blanket and covered the young boy with it. Then she sat down by Jett's body and waited for him to wake up. The past thirty-six hours had been grueling. But it was over now, and hopefully...hopefully, Jett would be okay.

Jett would awaken by the following morning, "Uhh...", he would stir, the pain was still immense... Jett couldn't speak because his throat had been worked on during the surgery, he likely wouldn't be able to speak for a few hours. He would look around in a drug induced stupor, he would spot Cyn and crack a small wincing smile... he was glad she was there.
Cynthia looked over when he stirred. She was right by his side, as always. She smiled brightly. "Hey, Jett. And it's okay...you don't need to talk. Do you want something to eat? Blink twice for yes, once for now." She took his hand and held it gently, smiling warmly. She was so relieved that he was awake.
Jett would lightly shake his head to notify her that he didn't want any food... he was exhausted it felt like his entire body had been placed in a wood chipper, only to be reconfigured by a 6 year old with water colors... He would've said this had it not been for the fact he couldn't. He would attempt to sit up only to feel a very sharp pain that would make him grunt heavily, it bellowed through the hall, "WHA!?", Malakai would awaken for a moment as though it were only a bad dream.
Jett would lay his head back down and look over to Cyn, he was hurting, but less with her in the room...
After a few hours he would begin to be able to talk, it was coarse, but functional. "Water...", he would struggle to complete.

Cynthia gasped when he hurt himself by trying to sit up, taking his hand quickly. "Shhh, shh just lay down. It's okay. Don't try to move, just get some rest, okay? Please. For me." She looked at him desperately. She would stay by his side, holding his hand, the entire time. When he asked for water, that was the only time she left him, going to fetch some water and helping him drink it so he didn't have to try to sit up again.
