I am posting this here to see how the people of the rpr think, do you like doing that Alt reality thing with your charas? Or are some of you like me, refusing to run the same character with more then one person at a time?
Now I also keep all my rps as part of they're lives, so my charas backstories are mostly all from rps I did with people, I don't like maiming them with out a reason, so I never create characters with already existing scars or traumas

For me, most of my rp's would be considered non canon in the Character's history. I typically have them completely planned out by the time I use them for rp's. Sometimes I'll string a series of events together to form a canon, for instance, my character Kara is constantly on the run from an evil troll spirit, so she travels to different countries and such which can explain some of the differences from rp to rp. But typically I try to keep my rps separate from my character's story.
I usually customize my characters backgrounds to fit the RP they're in with a few pre-determined 'events' in their past which helped to define who they are. I have no qualms with running the same character in more than one RP though I do try to not do so many that I lose track of what's going on in each one. I love doing alternate takes on them though; what if instead of X, Y had happened, and so forth.
It's very rare for me to RP a character with multiple realities. If I roleplay something out, it will affect my character permanently and shape them for any future RPs I have. I feel that's the whole point of roleplaying with a character, especially OCs. There's little value in putting them through all these events where they learn, grow, adapt and essentially evolve, only to have that negated at the end by flinging them into another setting with slightly different attributes.
Half the reason why Panne is such an interesting and well developed character is because everything on her page is because of what was actually RPed out. Her phobias, her personality changes, her wishes and desires, they all progressed into what they are now with actual RP backing it up. I never discarded anything that happened to her and she's one of my characters that people love the most. I want this for all my characters!
I do make exceptions, but I regard such stories as 'dreams'. The character will have some sort of events occur in their actual permanent reality where the story that unfolded has been presented to them in some way; think of a movie, a book, a dream, a story told by someone else etc., so that it incorporates with them all the same.
While this works out very well for me, the downside is that I have difficulty accepting RP from people who don't apply consequences of our RPs to their character, and make big changes nilly willy. It makes me not want to RP because it feels wasted. Why should I spend weeks to months playing out an awesome RP when my partner just up and says "Welp, time to negate everything that occurred and throw character x out there with a completely different history and traits and setting!"? It's not worth it to me. I turn down almost everyone who says "I'll change such and so on character x's site to accommodate for this RP" for that reason.
I'm not saying that playing with alternate realities is a bad thing. I believe it can be fulfilling to someone to play around with concepts without 'risking' permanent changes that are undesirable, or any other reason that works out for them. Just for me, personally, it doesn't work out, and it reduces my RP choices because it seems difficult for some to understand how important it is to me.

I admit, I have a 'Canon' for all of my characters (Created by one huge RP with my friend that's just mind-boggling ), mostly because the 'Canon' wouldn't fit in a lot of things. An example for this is my characters Rachel and Mitsuki. Now, canonically, they cannot be separated from each other for reasons. However, throwing out the Canon, they can, since they've never met (Dark, however, makes references to both of the previously mentioned characters, due to them being something he is apart of).
That being said, however, I'd love to play according to Canon with others, but, um... Too mind-boggling

I stick to what happens, no matter what I always intergrade the rps into my characters history, now if they mention it will depend on much of an impact was left on my characters, but I never change my characters to fit someone else's rp, if I have to I will back out or wont even start one with someone
