Lately i developed some key elements in my story writing. For example: You know you're watching a Tim Burton movie if the movie uses Claymation or if the movie has a dark, grim and bizarre feel to it.
These elements of my style being the following:
Variety
Over the top stuff
Short to the point storytelling
The lead characters from each story i write come from a unique setting, being based on something.
Adena the fire goddess is based on the Phoenix bird. Her setting takes place on a newly created earth after the original was destroyed during World War III. The new earth is controlled by a supercomputer named Origin which created new races and species to live among the humans as well as creating new lands all of which are recreations of places that were on the original earth.
Leona Fillmore is a princess on a quest to save two worlds from a corrupted warlord. Yes i know the story sounds cliche but i'm doing something different with it. Leona's story has two settings: A fantasy land called Otherworld and the other called Reality which is actually the modern real life world we live in. There is a portal between the worlds and characters from both worlds end up playing off each other like a nerd crushing on a high elf princess, an orc helping a blind old lady across the street or a wizard protecting the homeless on the streets of new york.
Esther Valkyrie and her setting is my take on Norse Mythology. The setting takes place in a far off galaxy consisting of nine planets all named after the nine worlds of Yggdrassil (Asgard, Jotunheim, Alfeim, Midgard etc) Many references to the source material are spread throughout with elements of Mecha anime (Gundam, Guren Lagann etc) and references to old school games (Mostly shooters like Gradius, R-Type and Space Invaders) thrown in. Her galaxy exists in the same timeframe as Adena's meaning Esther can head to New Earth where the fire goddess lives if need be.
Emile Gottfried is a soldier infused with the DNA of a goddess that controls time and space. She is a time traveler on a mission to rescue civilians from her time period who were vacuumed into portals that appeared all over her city and placed them in different time periods. (Cops in feudal japan, Firefighters in medieval europe etc) The antagonist in her story arc is a time traveling terrorist group seeking to bring hell on earth by developing a doomsday weapon called ARMAGEDDON consisting of samples from the deadly pandemics that occurred throughout history such as the medieval Black Plague, 1918 Spanish Flu, 2009 Swine Flu and Ebola. Emile's story actually takes place 300 years after Adena's timeline and since Adena can live up to 700 years she will appear on some occasions.
Keiko Takeuchi is a hybrid born to Tsukuyomi the moon god (from Japanese mythology) and a female Youkai (Creatures in japanese folklore) who became the apprentice of the samurai Miyamoto Musashi. She is the main heroine of a story which is my take on the Historical Fantasy genre since it takes place in 17th Century Japan. It also borrows elements from Tokusatsu (Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Godzilla) where characters use devices to transform, battle monsters and pilot machines to fight bigger monsters. Later half of her story however takes place 300 years into the present where she wakes up from cryogenic sleep in Leona's timeline thus triggering a crossover between those two.
I have others but they are not fleshed out as much yet. So yeah variety is what i like because it gives me unlimited possibilities. I want to make a character based on chinese mythology and martial arts and another which will be my take on the Wild West.
Next when i mean Over the Top stuff i mean things that involve crazy action (something like in Kill La Kill and Bayonetta), Bizarre but stylish characters (In the mold of Guilty Gear and Blazblue) and colossal action setpieces (Found in God of War, Asura's Wrath and the boss fights in Shadow of the Colossus)
And short to the point storytelling because people would get bored otherwise if everything is explained like a big wikipedia article.
Anyway, what do you guys think?
