Im always conflicted being on rpr, on one hand i am very particular about how my characters look. This means that i really like to draw my characters by hand (excluding my own profile picture because its just pretty) buuuut then my characters profiles look... Shabby i guess? Most people seem to just use pictures of anime characters and random stock images off the internet. Im not bashing it because they do look really nice!
I guess im wondering if anyone feels similiarly? Or the opposite! Do handdrawn profiles distract you? Is my mediocre skill level irritating? Or does it help (like i really hope it does) give a more personalized feeling to it?

I personally prefer unique art over images taken off DeviantArt or Google. If people judge your writing ability on your character's icon then that's their own problem.

Here's to encouraging you to do your own art (or find others to do art for you, within your ability).

Personally? I see a character with a stock image (especially if it's model-pretty) or rando stolen anime art and go the other way. I've had very few interactions that made me feel like doing otherwise. Exceptions to the rule and such that there are, it's hard to try over and over again and feel like you wasted your time.

Edit: Wanted to add, I first started drawing just to show my RP characters. The art was terrible! TERRIBLE. But my want to show them and not just steal something off the net was what kept me drawing til this day.
I favor a person having original art, whether it's something they created themselves or something they specially commissioned.

You'll get there, and this is probably what will drive you.

By the way:
My literal first character art ever, about 14 years ago, versus a wip from today.

I concur with Claine and Nova. :) I also see a lot of people taking artwork that was drawn for someone else and that's not really okay. We have an interesting article on that! I say drawing your own art only has benefits in that you avoid this issue entirely, but it's also a good way to explore your boundaries and try new things all the time. If nothing else, you know you'll always have artwork of your characters just the way you like them to look!

I massively prefer original art if it's at all an option. I, too, have done some very amateur art for my RP characters, before getting better due to years of practice.

Honestly, looking back at old colored pencil drawings of ancient RP characters gives me major warm fuzzies these days. I almost want to make a profile to show it off now.

You know, I'd love to see just a full site dedicated to people sharing their crappy old art. Let everyone share it, and folks who are newer to art can maybe build some confidence. ^^

I mean the whole site. Like deviantArt or something, but specially for beginner art.
Original art is so much better
It lets out the fact that you and that character have a connection.
I don't always mind 'anime pictures' and I have even less against realistic pictures (because I'm not good with them) But.. Just... Seeing the Same random anime picture of the Same character.. Confusing andit takes it away from the character quite badly
Akira Tadokoro (played anonymously)

The pics I had for this character I asked to use or had commissioned. This one I got comished. Since Akira and LAL art in general is hard to find.

The only thing I dislike is when people edit and recolour someone's hard work and claim it as their own.
Me? I honestly either draw my own artworks, commission them from someone else, or simply leave the avatar and gallery blank. I have nothing against those who use Google'd art and the like. I just prefer to use my own, no matter how crappy it is.

Besides, I feel bad as can be if I used someone's random artwork for my characters without permission. Not only am I getting rewarded for someone else's hard work, a good majority of the time, not a single piece fits how I would see my characters anyway. XD

(Self-Avatars or Main Profile art are always a different story, I think; it just shows how much you like one thing. However, I'm just as choosy about drawing my own self-avatars as well; I consider the one I have as a placeholder until I can draw one I like. <3)
