Can someone explain the basics of how the dice work, and how you know your vharacters "stats" ect. Essentially im interested in learning how to do the dice use rp and am not sure how to do it or to go about starting it?
I'd hate to offer a half-handed answer by letting you know there are a number of D&D Rulebooks in PDF format online. The "Player's Handbook" is your core rules bible when referring to just about anything dice-related. And many of these manuals help to break down the stats, which are surprisingly easy once you read through them.

Fairly certain most "Stats" that are written in profiles are drawn from Character Sheets that come from these Player Handbooks. That being said, there are often "slight" alterations made to each version that you commit to. The popular D&D rules, in my opinion, are currently Pathfinder. Followed closely by the older, fan-originated 3.5e. And the fast approaching popularity of the newest 5th Edition.

BUT, for some basics, rolling a d20 has been the staple in all editions. The roll of a d20 could provide some challenge and variety to the game. But its use really depends on the partners that you are RPing alongside. In D&D, lockpicking some easy locked doors, you must clear a "Challenge Rating" of 10 (or more) out of 20. Or clearing a large gap with a skillful jump could require a Challenge Rating of 15 (or more) out of 20. Modifiers that derive from your Stats can make these challenges easier or harder for your characters.

For creative uses, feel free to use the d20 roll and its Challenge Rating to generate some useful items for your characters in a survival setting.

I hope the half answer kinda helps you. Though I would highly suggest googling the popular rulebooks, and give them a good read. If you decide to settle on a rulebook you prefer, I'd be happy to help you make a character sheet. Just remember that using the roll of the dice in your RP means that you're prepared for the random and unpredictable in your roleplay.

We have several tutorials that can answer the basics of these questions, and present a much simplified dice system more appropriate for people who are normally freeform RPers:

The actual D&D system(s) are much more complex, and you should refer to the actual D&D rulebooks if you want to get that in depth. That said, it's fun and worth learning! :)

As Kim says, D&D is pretty advanced. Mechanics are a wide and wacky world, with many different ideas. Some dice don't even have numbers on them, only interpretive pictures!

To TL;DR the articles, most traditional dice systems can basically be summed up as:

-Player wants to do something with a chance of failure
-Player rolls dice
-Player adds/subtracts relevant numbers from their stats to the dice roll
-Final number is either high enough for a success, or too low and results in failure.

There's a really handy PDF on the Dungeons and Dragons website!

It's a heavy read, but it'll give you all the basics!
