The New Years Eve of 2016 was exiting, the Warden left early to spend time with his wife and son, and almost half the guard staff called off "sick" but we knew they actually went to party. But what we didn't know that was that in New York, as the ball dropped, the counting down into a new year was really counting down into a new world... Three, Two, One! As the ball opened it wasn't confetti that dropped but a chemical bomb! Yellow gas covered time square, and out of the gas rushed the dead... The way the CDC explained it on the news was as soon as the toxin got to the victims brain it killed the host and the toxin completely took control! A hunger for flesh and brains was all the host body to think about and a feral urge to feed took over... Half of America was infected or dead within the first week, half the world was infected by the end of the first month!
It has been four months and I have only left the prison once to get supplies from a prison food delivery truck that had crashed outside the gates. The driver tried to attack but I pulled my pistol on him. Since the Warden left four months ago for the New Years Eve party in New York I, Grant F. Newgate have been acting as Captain of the Guard. Most guards have left the prison, needing to rescue family members, but I stayed. My father was the only family I really had but he was halfway across the country when the toxin was released, he could be alive but we were never close enough for me to risk my life and job to find out. I was also dating this cute coffee shop waitress but not long enough to know her last name. It makes me sad but at this point I doubt if either of them are alive now anyway...
((Switching to Third Person for the Rest of the Story.))
Grant closed his journal, he believed he had written enough for today. Four guards remained including himself, we weren't too scared of a riot. This was a woman's prison in the rural town of Athens, Ohio. Not a lot happened here, four or five zombies had begun banging on the outer fence but nothing Grant couldn't handle with his night stick and Pistol. The main problem was moral here, the guards wanted to leave but knew nothing was really left outside and we had half the inmates commit suicide already from the depression of having to remain locked in their cells for days at a time. Only two cells, four inmates, we allowed out at a time so all 349 other inmates had to just sit in their cells other then being brought food. But we knew their would be an escape attempt with four guards on what was still about 200 female prisoners.
Their was also the annoying Mr. Leon, a man here to visit a Miss Vera on New Years Eve but because of the weapons in his trunk and knife in his boot upon entering all weapons were confiscated and he was tossed in a solitary confinement cell until the warden got back, but after everything happened we eventually just let him out and have him a guard outfit. Weapons were still off limits to Leon but he was given a night stick should he need it.
Grant looked out the window, this day would be different from others for one main reason, Grant Newgate looked out the window and couldn't believe what he saw. With all the undead in the world, a child, a boy probably just turned 18 was outside the gates. Being chased by undead... He was done for, but not if Grant had anything to say about it! "WAKE UP LADIES, THE TIME HAS COME TO DECIDE WHETHER YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF THIS WORLD OR JUST A RAT IN A CAGE!!!" Grant had been taking care of these inmates for too long, it's not like their was a world outside for them to ruin. Even the murderers might do some good. "THERE IS A BOY OUTSIDE, YOU ALL KNOW WHAT IS OUTSIDE WITH HIM..." Grant took a deep breath knowing this could be a very bad idea, even the guards backed up towards the wardens office prepared to lock the door should this end badly... "YOU ARE CRIMINALS, KILLERS AND THEIVES, BUT ITS TIME FOR YOU TO DO SOMETHING GOOD!!!" Pressing the emergence door release all the cells opened, "IVE UNLOCKED THE DOORS TO THE OUTSIDE... YOU ARE ALL FREE TO LEAVE, BUT IF MY KINDNESS OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS OF WORKING HERE HAS MEANT ANYTHING YOU WILL HELP ME SAVE THAT BOY!"

Vera took her time - after all this time in her next to solitary confinement (her three inmates had died under rather dubious circumstances shortly after new years eve) and knowing what awaited her outside, she really had no reason to rush it. She stepped outside lazily once the first big wave of prisonors had run away. She followed the bleak corridors she knew so well, trailing her fingers along the wall while she thought about what to do with her newfound freedom. There really was not much to do. The world had collapsed before her eyes over the last month. Most of her inmates had been rather... stupid and had run off into the open and away as soon as the gates had opened.
She, on the other hand, could tell that she needed companions - or at least more than her clothes to survive more than a day. Casually strolling towards the guard district, she knocked on the door.
"Someone there? ..I know you are... mister Grant~"

Jos was running for the small opening in the back of the prison. Every now and then shooting a bullet into the horde of the undead behind him. He turned to shoot again, the gun clicked and didn't make a sound. Jos growled and turned back around to see one of the undead in front, his katana soon flashed and cut it's head. He continued to run way from the small horde behind him, not wanting to end up as zombie chow. Jos tried looking for the opening again, seeing it was covered by zombies he dove into the opening hoping he could get in without getting bit. He did, but from where officer grant was, it looked like he had gotten eaten. Jos was obscured behind a building. The hole was open, no way to even get it closed. He looked for something to cover the large hole before the undead horde could get in. Ufortunately, they were already getting in.
I'm just sitting in my cell, waiting. The door may be open, but there's no reason to leave. No way I'm going outside, and there's no way I can get out to my car. So I just sit in the cell, biding my time. Maybe I can knock out that guard, take his keys, and get my guns back. But not yet. Only if I have to.
Lance sits, perched up in a watchtower on the left side of the prison, with his sniper rifle at his side. He leans back in his chair, balancing on the back two legs. Nothing much had happened at all on this particular day, the occasional zombie got a little too close for his liking so he would pick them off with a quick shot. He sits up and picks up his rifle and peers down the scope at a zombie and blows its foot off just to see it topple over into the dirt. He sits back and chuckles.
Three guards sat in the locked room one told Vera that he was busy as if trying not to sound scared and but the female guard couldn't help but stared out the window, the boy had made it into the inner perimeter by slipping under the fence! Unfortunately undead began pouring under the fence too! About six zombies in all before the boy killed one. The boy had an opening now, the front door of the prison was open and almost two hundred women poured out into the court yard. A few got zombie bites but most broke the chain on the gate and vanished into the surrounding wooded area. With the woman now riding as undead there was still only around fifteen zombies, but most of them began chasing the fleeing inmates.
As for Grant, he wasn't in the Wardens office as Vera suggested, he was near the main entrance of the prison on the opposite side of the building. No keys to the wardens office, or the gun locker, just incase... But he did have one key on him. "Leon, it's time to leave..." Grant dropped one of Leon's guns on the ground and kicked it forward. "Just a regular revolver with six shots, that's all you get until you prove my trust... Got it?" Grant himself had a pistol, a nightstick, and a military grade shotgun slung on his back. "We've been out of food for three or four days now Leon, it's time to go scavenge..."
Grant had already told the other guards of his plan, go out grab food from the Super Market a few miles north and return. Bunkering down the prison like it was nobodies Buisness was the best idea, and the guards were the only ones Grant trusted to keep the prison safe. "I know your only someone I recruited Leon but I need you... Can I trust you to do the right thing?" He paused but not for too long, "help us get food and supplies and as soon as we get back here to the prison your guns... And knife, are yours to take with you, deal?" All Grant had to do now was grab Lance from the western watch tower and the three of them would be ready to go, hopefully with the boy who was at the eastern gate.

Lance hears the sound of the undead rushing through the gates and gunshots. He turns around quickly with his rifle in one hand by the strap, looking over to the front of the prison where the zombies are pouring in. He slings his rifle over his shoulder and starts climbing down the ladder. He takes his walkie talkie out of his pocket and yells into it, "Grant! Grant! What the hell is going on out here?"
Vera rolled her eyes.
"Greeeat tells us to do the right thing. Barehanded. Against infected. Any normal system would have made him sit in the cell next to me." It really sounded like there were no other options.. she walked all the way around towards the gate, but not through the courtyard. She took the route through the guardway, slightly elevated. Eventually her path would lead her to the main entrance, where she expected to see the remains of a massive (wo)manslaughter.

Jos pushed the zombies back, making them topple over each other. He ran into the prison gates, thinking of hells gates instead. Slashing at whatever moved in his way, careful not to hit inmates. He hoped to just be able to make it by the gate, even if it was by the skin of his teeth. He could hear the women screaming their lungs out... at least the ones being eaten. He gritted his teeth, knowing he wouldn't be able to sleep soundly ,hearing the screams in his dreams. He ran back into the disaster of the horde, pulling whatever inmate he could back into the gates. His clothes had been soaked in blood by both the undead and inmates.
I pick up the revolver, and I stand up. "Alright, I'll help. And we should also try to get to my car, I have more guns and ammo in there, unless you took those as well."
Grant chuckled, "of course we searched your car, do you take me for a fool?" Chuckling Grant walked back towards the stairs, "Kelly and Ed are held up in the wardens office with the prisons weapons and the ones from your car. They are going to keep me posted on the status of the prison via radio and vise versa..." Heading up a second stair well Grant reached the over look and saw Lance walking over the scaffolding towards them. Looking down at his radio he saw it was on the wrong channel. "Sorry Lance I kinda did something a bit rash... And as the you're only one here other then me with some real stones I thought you might have talked me out of it..." Grant explained to Lance about Kelly and Ed in the Wardens office and how Lance, Leon, and Grant were going to get food and supplies from the Super Market in Athens, Ohio and then return here. Leon would get his guns back and everyone would be happy!
Out at the east gate about a hundred and fifty women escaped, twenty five died and close to ten more just turned bringing the zombie count to sixteen around the east entrance of the camp. "We were going to starve all those women and ourselves if we kept them here... Plus now is our chance to slip out the west exit while these undead freaks are preoccupied..." Officer Grant hoped the boy got the distraction he needed to escape as well but he had no way of knowing.

She paced herself. Partly curious as of who had survived; she knew a couple of the inmates but most had kept a respectful distance from her which was nothing she minded. Sadly her peaceful days in her cell were over... and it seemed like it was time to move along.
She soon arrived at the gate. At least it was open.. the warden had not lied about that part.. But sacrificing the whole prison for one person? Vera frowned at his actions and looked down onto the small yard in front of the gate She would tell him a piece of her mind. Even if it was just to spite him. There seemed to be around 30 dead women.. or turning women. There was no way in telling for her. The inmates had not seen a zombie in reality up to now. But the boy was down there as well.
She waved at him and shouted "Did you get BITTEN?"

Jos was to busy silencing the women who were bitten, after he was done he looked up to Vera. Seeing she was an inmate, he waved back kind of tiredly from having fought a lot of the... zombies. He couldn't speak, at least yell anymore, his voice was sore, not from screaming, not from yelling, just not having someone to talk to for so long. He decided he'd try to talk to her and walked up slowly, his katana still in hand. Even if it was just to talk, he couldn't trust anyone anymore. Everyone knew that was basically giving someone a gun to shoot you with.
Vera slowly raised her hands "I'm unarmed.." She smiled at him and walked closer, meeting him in the middle. "Did you.." She looked at the visibly bitten "end their misery?" She looked genuinely sad as she walked past Jos and inspected the dead further.
"The warden sacrificed them all for you. You should treasure your life"
"The warden sacrificed them all for you. You should treasure your life"
He nodded at her first question, it was the least he could do. He looked at her, still not trusting her. "They died from people pushing, not my fault. I owe no one nothing... But tell him I said thanks" He said sheathing his katana, his hand went to the knife on his hip. His voice was hoarse, sounded like he had a cold or something. He decided to begin walking towards the entrance deciding anywhere as better than here.
She shook her head and stood back up. "He does not deserve thanks for his actions." Vera frowned.. "..and you can't want to tell me that you would have survived without them." She stood back up and walked towards him again.
"Just to give you a small briefing of the place. Four guards, maybe 3 inmates left. The rest.. I guess you met already." She sighed. "So what's your name?"
"Just to give you a small briefing of the place. Four guards, maybe 3 inmates left. The rest.. I guess you met already." She sighed. "So what's your name?"
"They left probably, too many coming from the east. Maybe more from the south. Whole lot more from the north." He said stopping and looking towards her. "I would've survived, just might've killed more people. My plan was to get into the prison, the hole I got in though. That would've made more of the undead come in. Might've killed us all" He said looking towards her, he felt he didn't have to explain himself to someone who hasn't even probably what these things do to a person, they change them, both physically and mentally. "My name's Jos. And you might wanna grab a weapon here, trust me they come in handy in the long run." He said picking up a knife from one of the undeads body and throing directly next to her foot.
"..wanted to see how orange fits you?" She chuckled and continued "I'm Vera..." she stopped herself for a moment "You said the undead are on the move?" She raised an eyebrow, finding it hard to believe.
Vera picked up the knife and made a short cut into the fabric of her pants, creating a makeshift handle on her right leg.
"I'd prefer a gun ..but " she sighed and looked back to Jos. "Want me to show you the guard room? Figure you might want to meet the others - at least the ones from who I know where they are."

"Well, if the guard room has weapons we can split. As long as I know I can trust you. After all this I wouldn't want to be killed by one person" He smiled, his humor was dark. He sighed and pulled out his colt python and pointed it at one of the undead on the other side of the fence. He pulled the trigger and it didn't make a sound. "I'm out pf ammo, and I only travel lightly." He said looking at her the whole time, putting it back into its holster. "Anyways lets go get your people." He began walking towards the prison figuring he should help her out.
Vera raised an eyebrow "Split? I doubt the guards would allow that." She eyed him curiously as he showed her his empty magazine. He probably had spare ammo somewhere... - but nodded quickly as he continued talking.
"Follow me" She started walking back the way she had come from, eventually arriving at the guards door and knocked.
"It's me again. I got the young man from earlier with me"
