A woman with long, pure black hair was running across a grassy field. She had blood running down the side of her face. Her long elvish ears flicked behind her as she heard the arrow coming. She spun around and sliced the arrow before it could reach her with her claws. She spun back around and kept running. The person that was hunting her blew a shrill whistle that caused the black haired woman slide to her knees, holding her hands over her sensitive ears. When the whistle finally faded and the woman stood up to run,an arrow struck her in her back and through her heart. The woman froze and looked down at the arrow.Black blood dribbled out of the side of her mouth and she collapsed onto the ground. The person that had hunted the woman turned around and left the area.
"Bella? Bella!"
A tall man with a bow in hand and a quiver at his waist, looked around him in dismay. His traveling partner, a jet-black wolf with golden eyes, had melted into the shadows of the trees suddenly and without any warning. It wasn't that he was afraid the wolf would not return; he'd raised Bella since she had been just four months old, and knew she could find him more easily than he could find her. It was that she had disappeared so suddenly without warning that he was worried.
Hitching his traveler's pack higher on his shoulders, he continued along the path and soon found the trees giving way to a meadow. The snap of a twig beside him made him flinch. He turned to see Bella reappear and he sighed in relief.
"Good girl, Bella." He murmured, and she wagged her tail. Then suddenly the wolf stiffened, ears cocked forward hard in alert. Her tail stopped and her fur bristled. A low growl, an ominous sound from the half-grown wolf, rumbled, grabbing Nathan's attention as she reacted to a sound only she could hear.
"What is it girl? Find it!" Bella needed no further prompting and dashed forward. Nathan followed, his long legs carrying him easily over the ground in spite of the weight on his back. Bella redoubled her pace upon seeing a fleeing figure, but Nathan called her off; his eyes were on an unmoving form sprawled in the grass. The dark green of the grass, he realized shortly, wasn't shadow, but blood.
"Bella, heel!" He ordered, shedding his traveler's pack and his cloak as he dropped to his knees. He prayed he had gotten there in time, and cursed when he saw the arrow in her body. It would be a miracle if she lived--and if he didn't die in the process of trying to heal her. He set to work, closing his eyes and placing his hands at the junction where skin met arrow shaft. He steadied his breathing and called up his magic. He could see already that she was dying, but he wasn't going to let her go without a fight.
He concentrated on the heart first, repairing the wounded muscle, tissue, and so on, driving out the arrow shaft a little at a time. If done right, she would have only the faintest scar to show for it. If done wrong; both of them would die. The shaft slowly worked its way free; backing up until all that was left was the arrowhead just embedded in the skin--though no longer a mortal injury. But already, Nathan had stretched himself too far. He opened his eyes to blackness.

The woman twitched and slowly got to her knees. She opened her eyes to reveal purple eyes that had slitted pupils. She looked at the man who had helped her and noticed he was almost out of his own magic. She held her hands open in front of her and called forth a ball of pure light. She turned to the man and let the ball of light disperse and regenerate the man's magic.
Nathan stirred a little as his magic replenished itself; the strange magic making him shiver slightly. He opened his eyes with a start and sat up, remembering where he was and what he'd been doing. "Ah--" He cut himself off, seeing that the girl he'd just saved had apparently returned the favor.
He offered a hesitant smile. "Sorry, I'm not really used to doing such an intensive healing all at once." That was the understatement of a lifetime. He noted the oddity of her ears and eyes, but didn't remark upon them. There was no reason to. "Are you okay?"

The woman studied the man with her purple eyes as her elvish ears flicked behind her."Yes."She said in a small voice like she wasn't used to talking."I didn't hurt you when I healed you,did I?"
Nathan shook his head and slowly got to his feet. His lanky form took some time before he stood upright. "No, you didn't hurt me. Thank you." He glanced around the grassy field. "What happened to you? I thought I saw something, but I guess my wolf chased it off. Bella's her name; she's friendly. And I'm Nathan."
Bella approached then, tail wagging and ears pricked forward curiously. Her unnatural gold eyes stood out in stark contrast to her black fur.

The woman stood. She slightly smaller than Nathan and her black hair reached the back of her knees."There was a someone,a assassin probably, after me.I'm not surprised when the person tried to kill me though."The woman looked at Nathan."My name's Amethyst,by the way."
Nathan's eyes widened slightly and he scanned the area a second time. "An assassin? Why would there be one after you?" What had he gotten himself into? "Scratch that--you don't have to answer if you don't want to--where are you heading? I'll see you as far as your destination. I daresay the assassin won't attack with Bella nearby." He hoped.
"I'm not going anywhere.I don't stay in populated areas for long so I don't have many friends."Amethyst eyes went dull purple for a few moments."As far as I know,if that assassin or whoever the heck he was won't be coming after me for awhile. If he happens to come after me again..."Amethyst stopped herself, looked away and bared her her teeth slightly, revealing her long fangs.
Nathan regarded her for a moment; his dark eyes betraying nothing. "Well, I'm trying to head for the nearest town, so if you'd point me in the right direction...I'd be much obliged. You're welcome to join me, if you'd like."
He cut his words off though as Bella approached the young woman. The black wolf's hackles were up as she scented the air. Nathan had half-reached for his bow and arrows before realizing that it was Amethyst she was reacting to. He sighed. It was always something.

Amethyst looked at Bella. She looked at Nathan."I'm sorry.I guess normal animals dislike my genetics."
"Bella, down!" Nathan ordered. The wolf flicked an ear at him, as though contemplating disobeying, but Nathan growled something under his breath and the wolf sighed and lowered her hackles.
"I'm sorry," apologized Nathan. "She's great for sensing predators, but sometimes she gets confused between friend and foe, and we only just met. Is there something we can do for you?"

Amethyst shook her head."I'm just traveling because I'm trying to escape some memories."
Nathan grimaced. "Has it worked yet?" he asked. "I tried the same thing once--it was how I met my best friend--but I...never really came to terms with it."
Amethyst shook her head."The memories are of my mother and father dying and the other one are the looks of fear on my older siblings' faces."Amethyst sighed.
"What happened?" Nathan asked softly.
"I watched my parent die when I was 4 and I lost control of my anger in front of my siblings."
There was definitely more to this story than she was telling. As neutrally as possible, he suggested: "Is the anger part why you have an assassin chasing you?"
"I don't know,that's the problem."
Nathan looked at her quizzically. "Well, what do you-" he cut himself off and looked away briefly. "Sorry, I never meant to pry." He studied Bella as she flopped into the grass and rolled on her back to scratch an itch.
