Turmoil and strife have lead many a common person, and those that feel some calling of power, to gather into cults focused around five ancient entities. None of these entities are pleasant, and all were sealed away as best that could be done. Amidst all this, the greater kingdoms make war for land and resource, for revenge and pride. Among the defensive force for Gransgaard is the baron who's duty involves the mutual border with two enemy kingdoms, and one neutral kingdom.
Suffering great torment at the hands of one of the cults, the baron is among the few men of power that know of the trouble brewing. Now, he must heal, and lash out against them, and stop the cult before they may succeed in freeing that which they worship. Along the way, he will meet a companion, a lady to melt his heart, and steel his dedication, both to kingdom and self.

Magic is rare, but not unheard of. Mundane characters may or may not believe in it. Magical characters may form small and exclusive pockets for study, protection, etc.

Unrest may be part of the setting, but any scenes that happen to involve combat may be summarized.

Are you only looking for one character that needs to be a woman? I can see Adelbard fitting in very well, but if not I understand.
