Somewhere near the top of the front page, it should show how many people are actively posting in the 'just chatting' main chat/forum topic, with a small list of who's there.
We could also have a page that shows all active public chats going on now.

Hey Micheru! Funnily enough, that's already a thing! If you go to the Community area of the site, it'll say how many players are in the chat and somewhere near the bottom of the page, it displays the most recent posted and/or replied to topics as of that time~
The most recently posted topics are in the sidebar of the community page on desktop, toward the bottom on mobile. 
There is indeed a count of how many people are in the chat topic on the community page! We'll not be adding any listing of the people that are in it, however, as it's too easy to out people who are posting as anonymous characters.
