My rant was responded to with wonderful patience, thank you everyone. I'm sorry for venting so rudely and hope I didn't cause anyone any trouble.

Hi!

I am sorry you're having a disappointing experience. Unfortunately, you fall into a small minority of players.

Most of us only have a good 1-10 characters or in my case I have only a few and have slots that I delete a character after I'm done using them and replace them with new characters.

For those characters, I expect to use in permanent RPs and know that I can get RP for them I keep them around.

Some people make Hub Character Accounts. Rather you create a character account and then have the pages or sections of the page have the character information. This is usually the best option for those who want more than the free allotted 10 characters.

Another option is to do as I do and have your characters backed up on text files and just keep some slots open to exchange character data when the need arises.

Honestly, if I had the income though I'd support the website.

And most people who have more than ten characters tend to pay for the slots or for Epic Membership.

Not only do characters and their information take up server space but they are doomed unless the website is supported financially. Thus the need for Epic membership and the other paid features.

RPR is such a great website because a) the community cares and b) it has the monetary support to keep running. If everyone got 100 character slots for free then I am very doubtful that there is anyone who would continue buy extras for their profiles or characters. Thus, the website loses its financial backing and Kim would have to shut down the website! That'd be unfortunate for all of us here in the RPR family.

That money support allows for new and better features, consistent up time, and also a relief of having to worry if RPR will exist tomorrow.

I know this likely isn't going to persuade you to stay but I hope you can at least give the website a chance and let RPRs true light and greatness shine. Regardless of what you decide I wish you the best!

Thanks for the reply Ryu. ^^

Rest assured I have no intention of abandoning the site completely as I love the people here, but I will be using other sites for my character compendium.

Because I am a very active roleplayer and tend to always have more than ten roleplays it was disappointing to me to have that limitation on my characters, but I do understand the financial aspect.

Hi there! To elaborate on Ryu's post, there are always options for expanding your account without paying for it with real money.

There are a bunch of people who have giveaways for Epic items (I've done half a dozen or so myself). Most of them are easy for everyone to enter and you have a chance at getting permanent character slots, extra pages, a month of Epic subscription and so forth. You can always snoop around the Smalltalk and Forum Games forums to see if there's a contest like that happening!

Epic Week, the site's birthday celebration, is coming up on April 24th with a whole bunch of contests. While some require specific skills (like drawing), others are designed in such a way that anyone can enter. You can sometimes win real life goodies, or just like with member giveaways, you can win Epic items to upgrade your account with. I highly recommend keeping your eyes peeled on the News articles and joining!

I also want to elaborate that technically, the 10 'free character slots' you're using are not free to use. Hosting each character profile and images already costs quite a bit of money on its own, but Kim chose to make 10 free slots available to all. As Ryu stated, the average person uses only around 2-3 character slots on their account, so anyone who exceeds this number will take up quite a bit of resources. Bandwith is pretty dang expensive in the website hosting business, and without paid membership there simply wouldn't be an RPR at all. If hosting costs and maintaining and upgrading the site didn't cost money and resources, Kim would totally give everyone unlimited character slots!

From what I've seen, other websites compromise for these costs by cutting down in other areas. Charahub being down often is likely related to this. They offer you a lot more room, but you can use this room less often. It also has a different overal goal than RPR from my first impression of it, so it's really just a matter of what fits better with you personally.

I totally understand that you prefer more space, and that's absolutely fine. :) It's not uncommon for folks to combine resources, like hosting a profile of RPR but RPing elsewhere, or vice versa, so do whatever works out best for you! I hope our explanations gave you some more insight on the why's and how's.

Thank you so much Sanne. ^^ That does help a lot, and I am definitely very grateful for the slots free to use. I'll keep an eye out for those contests and giveaways.

I'll admit I haven't noticed any kind of restrictions on charahub, I tend to make characters in waves and haven't run into any limitations yet. Still, I'm in love with the level of personalization on the RPR pages. <3

I admit I'm uncertain how to respond to this, because I can't quite figure out what outcome you were hoping for from saying it. Is it a request for change? A general venting?

Others have done a great job summarizing why the site is set up the way it is, so I'll just comment on one specific aspect of what you wrote that has thrown me for a loop.

I don't spend money on extra site privledges anywhere, no matter how good a site is, because there are always other options.

It seems like you are saying that there is literally nothing I (or anyone) could do to make you value the hard work (and cash) it takes to provide the world with all these options.

It is okay if you don't want to spend your discretionary money on the RPR - many members don't and I don't hold that against them. Some members don't have discretionary funds at all. To all of these, I have gifted 10 free slots, that I pay for instead of them. It is freely and happily given (though I am a little grumpy when people try to take more than I've offered against my clearly stated wishes.)

But if someone creates something that you love, be it an app, a website, a comic, a web series, a poetry slam night - anything that makes your life better for its existence - and you want them to continue to do that thing and be able to provide it to you and others for years to come, consider paying for it. Real labor goes into creating and providing.

There are many sources of content out there, and you'll certainly have to pick and choose which ones you value the most, and maybe you value another site more than the RPR for whatever reason and want to invest there. And that is okay. But I would urge everyone to not not value content and content platforms. If you have any discretionary funds, think hard on what you love the most, and help keep that goodness in the world by supporting the things you like best. Value the labor that other people do for you, even if that labor produces intangible results.

My rant was responded to with wonderful patience, thank you everyone. I had taken a lot of general stress and snapped out at a site that I honestly love, and what was meant to be a simple rant came out a lot moere disrespectful than I meant it to. I'm sorry for venting so rudely, and hope I didn't cause anyone any trouble.
