Okay, so let's say I roll a natural 18, and the threshold is 17. However, the poison pulls my number to 16. Does that affect the crit, or do I still get it? (Sorry for asking all these questions, BTW.)

The way combat works is basically -- Each monster has a number that represents its ability to resist being hit, either by dodging or by absorbing the blow with armor. It's called "AC" (armor class). You have to roll higher than the monster's AC to successfully hit. Bonuses and penalties (like the -2 from poison) are calculated. If the total is higher than the monster's AC, you hit! If you hit, then you roll dice to determine damage.

If your original hit roll was a critical hit, then your damage roll gets multiplied. Some weapons only have a *2 on crits, others have a *3 or even *4. So if you roll high damage and then get to multiply that, you do a huuuuge amount of damage.

You should, so long as the ac isn't 18.
